Mr. Porter steakhouse features signature island bar and a chic lounge along with DJ night with a dining menu of ranging from T-bone steaks to perfectly roasted vegetables. It serves breakfast (07.00 - 10.30), lunch (12.00 -14.30) and dinner (18.00 - 23.00). The Butcher is a high-end yet casual burger bar that offers gourmet burgers made of highest quality Aberdeen Angus beef, and cocktails from 11.00 am - 01.00 am.

The Duchess offers upscale restaurant, tearoom, bar and chef’s table and the elegance of traditional London hospitality, balanced with Viennese grandeur and refined flavors from Southern France and Italy, also known as Nouveau-Niçoise Cuisine prepared from local produce and serves breakfast (7 am to 10:30 am), lunch (12.00 - 14.30) and dinner (18.00 - 23.00). The Bar is open from 12.00 - 01.00.

Room Description:

The historical Exchange building was built in 1924 by Dutch architect and housed the telephone switchboard of the Royal Dutch post. The Exchange building has 172 stylish rooms available as Cozy, Wonderful, Fabulous, Cool Corner, Marvellous Suite, Wow Suite and Extreme Wow Suite.

The Bank building, designed by Poggenbeek in 1906 to 1908, is situated across the Exchange building. The building is so named after the KAS Bank that the building housed for 99 years and now listed as a ‘Rijksmonument’ (a national heritage site). The Bank building boasts 66 stylish guest rooms with black and gold bedspreads inspired by the original bank vaults available as Wonderful, Fabulous, Studio, Marvelous, Fantastic, Wow and Extreme Wow suites and AWAY Spa.

All of the rooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi, spa/fitness, air conditioning, flat screen TV, in-room safe, minibar, phone, Bliss spa amenities, W Signature beds with pillow top mattress and luxurious 400-thread count sheets, open plan bathrooms, open plan living space, complimentary access to FIT Gym and AWAY Spa.

Exchange rooms

Cozy rooms are located from 1st to 3rd floor and come with city view. Wonderful rooms, located from 1st to 5th floor, have separate bedroom with king beds and living room as the two are divided with a glass partition, a rainforest shower in bathroom and an Espresso maker. Fabulous rooms are truly fabulous as they come with to state-of-the-art entertainment, iPod docking station, apart from all the amenities mentioned above. The Cool Corner rooms are state of the art colourful and entertainment rooms located in the corner of the building. Marvelous Suites are duplex rooms that redefines luxury with the correct blend of music, fashion and design.

The Wow Suites are large light filled suites with floor to ceiling windows that gives amazing view of the city from your bed, round bed, and luxurious bathroom. The Extreme Wow Suites features walk-in closet, separate sitting area, large round bathroom with shower and tub, corner rooms, large round bed, City view on Royal Palace from your bed for wow factor.

Bank Rooms

Wonderful rooms are located on 2nd and 4th floor and offer vibrant rooms with state-of-art technology and visionary amenities and in-room entertainment and added canal view in Wonderful Canal rooms. Fabulous rooms are located on 2nd and 5th floor and additionally have 40" LCD TV and iPod docking station and bathroom with shower or tub and canal view from some rooms. Studio Suites offer a private modern lounge with city view. The Marvelous Suites are chic two floor suites, including a living room downstairs and a cozy bedroom area upstairs.

The Fantastic Suites offer private outdoor Jacuzzi and a furnished rooftop terrace. The Wow Suites are located in the corner and come with luxury redefined with a luxurious bathroom with shower and bathtub, round bed and a unique view upon Singel from the room. The Extreme Wow Suites are large duplex that additionally feature separate living area, walk-in closet, hot tub with jets, large round bed with city view.

The historic centre of Amsterdam plays host to a huge number of visitors each year. The list of reasons to visit this beautiful city is long and varied. The relatively compact centre is packed with historical buildings, picturesque canals and cultural hotspots. From the wonderfully quirky, laid back Jordaan in the west to the old centre and Nieuwmarkt in the east, Amsterdam is a great city to walk around.  If you arrive via the vast Centraal Station, the city spreads out in front of you. Follow the mighty Damrak down to Dam Square and beyond towards Vondelpark and Museumplein in the south. The canals will either confuse or guide you. The centre of the city extends as far as the fourth canal in the inner ring – Prinsengracht. The four main canals sweep around the old city before colliding with the River Amstel to the east.

Leafy Vondelpark

Art and history lovers will be spoilt for choice in Amsterdam. See the work of Dutch Masters including Van Gogh and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum before paying an emotional visit to the Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht in the heart of the Jordaan. If you are in Amsterdam on a sunny day you should head down to the leafy Vondelpark. There is a lovely café and restaurant but you could just pick up some food and find a little patch of shady grass to stretch out on. Fully recharged you can head into the centre of Amsterdam and take advantage of the wide range of cafes, bars, restaurants and clubs.

Eat and drink in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a large, international city and you can eat what you want, when you want. The main streets running through the centre of the city are busy with a wide range of restaurants and bars. For a more intimate and authentic experience, head west into the Jordaan. This area of the city has resisted the excesses of modern life and held onto a more independent, artisan approach to living. The bars on every corner are cosy and welcoming with simple menus and drinks on offer. Local restaurants and cafes are tucked away on the little lanes leading across the four main canals. The Spui is home to larger grand cafes where well-dressed locals mingle with visitors to the city. The food and service is more polished with the added benefit of some excellent people watching opportunities. The area around Nieuwmarkt is home to a good range of great value restaurants.

Top Tip:

Try the local speciality - Rijsttafel. A colonial inspired Indonesian feast consisting of a huge range of small dishes. Make sure you are hungry – there can be as many as forty separate dishes served up!

Amsterdam nightlife

The city is busy with bars and clubs and you will find somewhere that plays the music you like on most days of the week. The bars are open late and very busy at the weekend. Head down to Leidseplein for a drink. The square is lined with popular bars and a mixed crowd. The area offers a bit of late fun for all – you will find several large live music venues including Melkweg and the Sugar Factory as well as the casino and a wide range of theatres. Nearby Rembrandtplein is a good alternative and perhaps better suited to visitors looking for a late night clubbing experience. You will find a good range of large, popular bars as well as large clubs including Escape and Studio 80.

Shopping in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is great city to shop in. The picturesque streets leading through the centre are lined with both large department stores and boutiques selling more exclusive goods. The Magna Plaza in Dam Square is worth a visit. This former main post office building is a beautiful piece of architecture from the outside. Step inside the ancient walls and the interior is a multi-level shopping paradise. Beyond Dam Square, Kalverstraat is home to a wide range of large brands and local specialist stores. The ‘nine streets’ district (Negan Straatjes) nestled between the canals is home to jewellery and vintage goods specialists. If you love antiques and art then you should head down to the Speigelkwartier.  The area is busy with little specialist dealers and markets. High end fashion followers need look no further than P.C. Hoofstraat, the ultimate in exclusive shopping.

Top Tip:

Amsterdam has some amazing flea markets – look out for the weekly market in Nieuwmarkt.

Things to see in Amsterdam

Start with a long walk along the canals, explore the flower market, and admire the gable fronted building dating back to the 17th century. Art lovers should make a point of visiting the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum down in Museumplein. The Artis Zoo out beyond Waterlooplein to the east is a great place to visit with the family. For a water level view of the city and historic canals, consider taking a boat cruise. The options are seemingly endless and a weekend trip will not seem enough. Make sure you leave time for some people watching from the windows of a grand café.

Top Tip:

Try an evening cruise. Once the sun goes down the bridges and canal side houses light up giving the canals a magical feel.

Café Hoppe

This ‘brown café’ should be top of your list of bars to try during your visit to Amsterdam. The old part of the bar was established in 1670 and is pretty much unchanged due to the listed status it enjoys. Take a seat at the bar and soak up a little bit of old Amsterdam. The bar is on the edge of Spuistraat which sits on the Singel canal.

Daalder

This amazing little restaurant is nestled in the heart of the Jordaan on Lindengracht. From the outside this is just another quirky little corner café but step inside and you are greeted by a top class restaurant serving fresh, exciting food that draws on both local and international influences.

King’s Day – April 27th

Prior to 2014 the whole nation would come together on the 30th April to celebrate the Queen’s official birthday with a huge party that spreads across the city with live music, parties and impromptu bars and food stalls. Queen’s Day has now become King’s Day as Willem-Alexander, the Queens oldest son has taken over the throne. The party is no less enthusiastic!
