Porto Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Porto

Move over Lisbon: it’s time for Porto’s time in the spotlight! Tourist numbers for this coastal city in northwest Portugal has boomed in recent years, with tourists drawn in for its laid-back Mediterranean vibes, colourful buildings and endless food and drink possibilities.

You’ll find a whole mix of accommodation in Porto: there’s everything from 5* spa hotels to boutique rooms and family-run guest houses. Whether you’re in town for just a short weekend or a longer spell, you’re bound to find the perfect fit for your Porto adventure!

Where to stay

Porto

From the colourful riverside neighbourhood of Ribeira to the downtown area of Baixa, Porto is full of colourful pockets. Ribeira, with its charming cobbled streets and pastel-coloured houses, is one of the most instantly recognisable areas in the city, and is the perfect place to base yourself if you want to be surrounded by all things traditional. For those short on time, Baixa is in the heart of the city, just a short walk from many of the popular landmarks.

Porto has accommodation that’ll please everyone, whether you’re travelling with mates, a loved one, or just by yourself. The city is teeming with luxury 4* and 5* hotels boasting chic interiors and relaxing leisure facilities such as a spa and pool; alternatively, there are affordable chain hotels in the centre of the city, as well as traditional inns in historic buildings.

What to see

Stretching out over the River Douro, the 19th-century Luís I Bridge is the most famous sight in Porto and one that’s impossible to miss. The bridge links the Vila Nova de Gaia area with the bustling Ribeira district, and is best viewed during a ride in the funicular dos Guindais. This funicular is the easiest way to navigate your way around between the city centre and the Ribeira neighbourhood.

History lovers will be in their element with the wealth of centuries-old buildings. Take a tour of the magnificent 12th century Porto Cathedral and its cloisters, and drop into Livraria Lello, one of the oldest bookshops in Portugal. It’s frequently named one of the top bookshops in the world, with the interior comprising of a spectacular forked staircase and a stained glass window skylight.

Don’t miss out on a visit to Cais de Ribeira in the Old Town, often named the most beautiful district in Porto. The riverfront promenade is characterised by colourful tile-fronted buildings, with various cafes and restaurants dotted along the way. A 12-minute drive away is Jardins do Palácio de Cristal - these outdoor landscaped gardens provide a peaceful place to wander around nature, all while enjoying views of the Douro River.

Nightlife

Porto’s nightlife has something for everyone, whether it’s laid-back bars, restaurants or clubs you’re after. The area of Vitória is where you’ll find much of the after-dark activities, especially off of Rua das Carmelitas: as well as a number of cafes and eateries, there are relaxed bars, nightclubs and cosy pubs, all just a few doors down from each other. One unmissable evening activity is a spot of fado - live melancholy music that involves guitars, mandolins and lyrics all about everything from love to death. Many bars and restaurants have fado evenings so that you can experience the typically Portuguese tradition while you sip on your drinks and tuck into local specialities.

What to eat

If there’s one thing to try in Porto it’s port wine: a Portuguese fortified wine that’s made with distilled grape spirits from the Douro Valley. It gets its name from Porto, and is a must-try when you’re in the city. The Francesinha is one of the most famous and well-loved local snacks: it’s a sandwich that’s filled with multiple meats and then covered in cheese and a beer-based sauce. There’s also the tripas à moda do Porto, the city’s namesake dish. It contains various types of meat, white beans, vegetables and herbs for a hearty meal to remember. If you’re short on time, the Mercado do Bolhão is one of the best places in the city to get to grips with the cuisine. This historic, bi-level market boasts a selection of stalls selling both local produce as well as prepared foods.

Shopping

Looking to splash some cash in Porto? The city has a wide range of places for you to do so - from NorteShopping shopping centre on the outskirts - to Via Catarina Shopping shopping, where the storefronts are replicas of old Northern Portugal village shops. Seven days a week the indoor Mercado Bom Sucesso offers up an array of food, clothing and cosmetics stalls, while workshops and live music ensure there’s plenty for all to soak up.

Review of 'SHERATON PORTO'

The Sheraton Porto oozes luxury and charm as soon as you arrive at reception. We were warmly welcomed by the reception staff and handed a glass of port as a welcome drink. We were even given a free room upgrade, and our room was absolutely stunning, with every feature well thought out and of the highest quality.
The breakfasts were amazing, with Champagne, caviar and smoked salmon available alongside an excellent hot and cold buffet.
Unfortunately we didn't get to try the spa! Maybe next time!

Review of 'SHERATON PORTO'

Probably the best 5 star hotel we've stayed in anywhere - as of May 2005. The hotel was excellent in itself, the room and facilities excellent, the breakfast in a class of it's own - with friendly staff as well. Even the bar prices were reasonable! The only drawback is it is a 10 min., 5/7 euro taxi ride into the centre, although there is a handy metro stop if you are on a budget! I'd recommend the hotel and espcially at alpharooms prices unresevedly.
