9/10 Fantastic

Great family hotel for budget conscious families

Just got back from 9 days at the Palia Puerto Del Sol hotel in Cala D'Or and can't fault it. If we'd believed some of the reviews then we would've booked somewhere else however we really pleased we didn't as our stay was great. We needed somewhere to cater for a party of 10; 5 adults, 2 teenage girls, 2 lads and 1 x 4 year old. Our adults consisted of a chef and a vegetarian so finding somewhere we were all happy was going to be difficult, this hotel worked perfectly for us. Our kids were happy with great pools, plenty of activities and a good animation team. Our veggie and chef were both really impressed with the quality of the food and options available. All the adults loved the Chillout Bar that overlooked Cala D'Or Marina. The staff were all incredible; friendly and hardworking, the complex is clean and tidy with a "village" feel. Rooms a bit dated but clean and functionable. Recommend the 2-bed, 2-bath apartment for larger groups. Finally location is great, overlooking the Marina and only a 10/15 minute walk to Es Forti beach and 20 mins to Cala D'or town with it's bars, restaurants and shops. The hotel even provides a shuttle bus service to some of the other stunning beaches. Highly recommend the hotel and the area.

Needs an overhaul

We first stayed here 20 years ago and sadly the apartments we had for this trip seemed exactly the same.same tables, chairs, beds, curtains.Shabby and not in the slightest bit comfortable. That said the apartment was clean ( although it did smell foisty...... early season perhaps) more concerning that the comfort was the security aspect. The lounge had French doors which did not lock ( nor was there a key)you could only lock the outside shutters. The bedroom was the same.....shutter locked but window didn’t.There was a safe in the room but no key ( perhaps you could get one from reception. We only stayed 4 nights which given the room was long enough. The restaurant was in a perfect situation and breakfast sat outside overlooking the Marina was delightful.Lots of choice and nice coffee from the machine.we didn’t have lunch or dinner there as there are so many nice restaurants in the area.We had a few drinks in the all inclusive bars which were pertectly acceptable and served by very nice staff. The pools are really clean.Looking st the prices for Summer I just think it is quite expensive for the standard of accommodation,it needs a real overhaul.Puerto del Sol is however so well situated for the Marina and a short walk into town.

mary

the hotel is in a great location but rooms are outdated and need refurbishment. The only place to get a drink is in pool bar, serving drinks in plastic cups day and night. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The pool is too small to accommodate everyone in the hotel and it is very crowded and hardly any umbrellas. Food was good and lots of choice.

great hotel

lovely location overlooking marina. Food was very good and plentiful. Activities available during the day, evening entertainment was a little limited. Nice clean rooms beds changed every day and fresh towels supplied. Good value would go back there.

Hotel ok but certainly not been renovated.....

Firstly, I should like to point out we are an average couple with average standards. We accept we were staying at a 3 star hotel but the level of accommodation was more like 2 star. As we had stayed at this hotel before and thought we were going to a totally renovated establishment we had maybe set our standards a bit higher which resulted in the disappointment we felt at the time of our stay. We have stayed at this hotel twice before - once in 2006 and then again in 2007. When we saw the hotel had been totally renovated we decided to give it another go. We certainly were disappointed as the hotel was in a worse state now than it was 6 years ago. The rooms are shabby and dated. The furniture is broken at bits and the whole place needs a lick of paint. The room we had, 25. which looks directly on to the main road at the top of the road from the reception area had 3 large skips outside which were constantly being raided by locals for scrap metal etc. This worried me as the last time we stayed at this hotel, 2007, I had my handbag stolen at 12.30 in the afternoon sitting at the snack bar having a coffee. The majority of people we spoke to had to be moved as the first room they were allocated was uninhabitable. Ours was ok but it could have been a lot better. However, after speaking to others we probably did not too badly. The main bar at reception area was closed during our stay and I don't think there is any intention to open it as the gantry is empty. There is a bar at the pool which was open between 10am and 8pm where you could order drinks. After 8pm the only place to get a drink to sit outside was at the entrance to the restaurant where 10 plastic tables with 4 chairs each were located. It was not ideal. There is a terrace area behind here which was locked. This could have been a nice place to sit as it looked directly over the marina. Maybe this will open at a later date once the new owners have managed to refurbish it. However, if the refurbishment is anything like the refurbishment meant to have taken place in the hotel then I doubt it will be worth visiting. There was only one person serving in the bars at any one time which inevitably meant queuing. On a positive note, my husband is a lager drinker and is quite fussy but he said the lager was ok. However, it would have been a lot better if it had been served in a glass. When we asked for a glass we were told only plastic glasses were allowed - even in the evening. I myself drink vodka and coke. It was ok albeit a little week. We have stayed in 4 star all inclusive accommodaion where the beer and vodka was undrinkable. The all inclusive finished at 10.30 in the evening which is a bit early for most people. We didn't go for dinner until 8pm so we only had an hour or so to get a drink before the all inclusive finished. When we booked in at reception we told the girl we had stayed before and said we had read that the hotel had opened again this year. She told us it had reopened in May - we found this strange as the reviews we had read prior to our holiday were dated between January and April - I'll let you decide what to make of that..... The standard of food had improved since our last stay. We couldn't eat in this hotel the last time we stayed but were able to find something edible this time. However, the crockery must have been left by the previous owners as the soup bowls were all chipped and cracked and you had to look for a crack free cup for coffee in the morning. The dinner plates were all scraped from constant use. The restaurant staff did an excellent job and were very pleasant. The bar staff seemed to be less friendly but I think this is because they are over worked. There is a serious shortage of bar staff. The hotel predominantly caters for French holiday makers and it would appear French guests received better service than any other nationality. One evening we were in the restaurant and the majority of French guests started singing and were allowed to continue without being asked to stop by any of the staff. If this had been British guests it would have been considered rowdy and boisterous.

The best thing about my stay was...

Location - directly next to the marina and within walking distance of Cala D'or town cenre and Es Forti

Lovely facilities and friendly staff

Apartment was clean and functional. The kitchenette was well equipped with a microwave, kettle and toaster. The pool was lovely although guests did "secure" their sun beds very early in the morning by placing their towels on them and then not arriving to use them till past 11am!! so in order to get a bed you had to do the same. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Our return flight was in the evening so we were offered a safe room to store our luggage after checking out and the hotel has a shower room facility in the reception so we were able to spend the day by the pool and freshen up before leaving. The hotel was on the edge of the Marina which you walked through to get to the main town/shopping/bar area - about 20-25 mins if you found the short cuts!

Fantastic Holiday everyone enjoyed

Arrived at Puerto Del Sol 21st July for a 10 night stay. What can I say, accomodation great, food fantastic, staff lovely, a very nice relaxing place to stay. We were all inclusive and as a result of a good holiday with only a few moans, would only go all inclusive on our next holidays. We have two children age 8 and 15, the 15 year old also took a friend. They had a great time, we met some really nice people. You need to get up early to get a sunbed they had all gone by 8.00am. I can honestly say this holiday was just what we needed, Good food, nice place to stay and the hot sunshine. Would give the Puerto Del Sol an 8/10 and would go back tomorrow if we could. Excellent time had by all

Just returned today after 14 day holiday. Considering that the appartments are 3 star we have no complaints. We didn't eat on site as we were on self catering, however, in and around the main resort there is an abundance of choice. Don Leonne is certainly work a visit. Polls were excellent and catered for us a family. Our son aged 9 enjoyed the daily activities by the entertainment group. Night time, well, I have kids, but too many kids runing around. I am not making a complaint. Everybody has to enjoy their holiday and we certainly did. The maid service was excellent as was Sandra on reception, helping us out with our Spanish. One thing yu must do thouhg is get a safe deposit box, excellent value and allowed us as a family to dump all our money and passport etc in a secure box. letting us all enjoy our holiday without somebody always having to keep an eye on our belongings. Great holiday, nice apartments well worth a visit. One last thing, if you have children and want to attend the Pirates show (a must) then go for the earlier show. the 8pm show means you gat back around 1am.

Excellent holiday!

Considering the hotel was only a three star I was very impressed. I stayed at the puerto del sol from the 2/7/2007 for a week and found it to be excellent. Food was good (lots of chips) however normally a large selection of meats and salads to also choose from. All 3 of the pools were very clean and safe. Rooms were spacious and clean with air conditioning (this was definately necessary!!!) There was some entertainment in the hotel but most nights found the centre of cala d'or more appealing (mainly due to our age 18 to 21). There is a vast range of restaurants, all seemingly of good quality in cala d'or itself! All staff at the hotel were very happy to help and the all inclusive option we had chosen was definately worth while. The only complaint I had was the shower head exploding whilst I was in the shower 1 night, however this was fixed within 2 minutes of complaining! Would definately recommend this hotel to anyone whether u r a couple, family or group of friends! If you have booked this hotel than u r going to have an excellent holiday!!!!

Happy holidays

We stayed at puerto del sol for two weeks 23rd may 2007. The apartments were very clean and tidy with an excellent maid service,,The beds were rock hard but having to get up for breakfast made it harder to sleep in haha, There was plenty of choice at meal times all with chips! The kids loved it. Three pools to choose from but the snack bar pool was the best and the safest for the kids apart from unless you go and sit on your sunbeds at 7am you wont get one as the germans cant read the signs that tell all in four different lanuages that you are not allowed to reserve beds with towels i have photos of sunbeds at 2 am in the morning!!!! so get up early to aviod rows! All the staff were wonderful apart from the snack bar be prepared for one rude lady that didnt enjoy her job she was the only one that spoilt our holiday with her cant be bothered attitude...if it wasnt for her i would rate this hotel a 10......she even gave out uncooked burgers beware!!! The bar staff and entertainment was ace in every way...the marina and its bars and staff are brill and we will be going back it is a beautiful holiday resort with plenty to do. We had a fantastic time PITY ONLY ONE PERSON MADE US UNHAPPY WITH THE SERVICE THEY PROVIDE.*****
