The historic centre of Amsterdam plays host to a huge number of visitors each year. The list of reasons to visit this beautiful city is long and varied. The relatively compact centre is packed with historical buildings, picturesque canals and cultural hotspots. From the wonderfully quirky, laid back Jordaan in the west to the old centre and Nieuwmarkt in the east, Amsterdam is a great city to walk around. If you arrive via the vast Centraal Station, the city spreads out in front of you. Follow the mighty Damrak down to Dam Square and beyond towards Vondelpark and Museumplein in the south. The canals will either confuse or guide you. The centre of the city extends as far as the fourth canal in the inner ring – Prinsengracht. The four main canals sweep around the old city before colliding with the River Amstel to the east.
Art and history lovers will be spoilt for choice in Amsterdam. See the work of Dutch Masters including Van Gogh and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum before paying an emotional visit to the Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht in the heart of the Jordaan. If you are in Amsterdam on a sunny day you should head down to the leafy Vondelpark. There is a lovely café and restaurant but you could just pick up some food and find a little patch of shady grass to stretch out on. Fully recharged you can head into the centre of Amsterdam and take advantage of the wide range of cafes, bars, restaurants and clubs.
Things to do in Amsterdam
Eat and drink in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a large, international city and you can eat what you want, when you want. The main streets running through the centre of the city are busy with a wide range of restaurants and bars. For a more intimate and authentic experience, head west into the Jordaan. This area of the city has resisted the excesses of modern life and held onto a more independent, artisan approach to living. The bars on every corner are cosy and welcoming with simple menus and drinks on offer. Local restaurants and cafes are tucked away on the little lanes leading across the four main canals. The Spui is home to larger grand cafes where well-dressed locals mingle with visitors to the city. The food and service is more polished with the added benefit of some excellent people watching opportunities. The area around Nieuwmarkt is home to a good range of great value restaurants.
Try the local speciality - Rijsttafel. A colonial inspired Indonesian feast consisting of a huge range of small dishes. Make sure you are hungry – there can be as many as forty separate dishes served up!
The city is busy with bars and clubs and you will find somewhere that plays the music you like on most days of the week. The bars are open late and very busy at the weekend. Head down to Leidseplein for a drink. The square is lined with popular bars and a mixed crowd. The area offers a bit of late fun for all – you will find several large live music venues including Melkweg and the Sugar Factory as well as the casino and a wide range of theatres. Nearby Rembrandtplein is a good alternative and perhaps better suited to visitors looking for a late night clubbing experience. You will find a good range of large, popular bars as well as large clubs including Escape and Studio 80.
Shopping in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is great city to shop in. The picturesque streets leading through the centre are lined with both large department stores and boutiques selling more exclusive goods. The Magna Plaza in Dam Square is worth a visit. This former main post office building is a beautiful piece of architecture from the outside. Step inside the ancient walls and the interior is a multi-level shopping paradise. Beyond Dam Square, Kalverstraat is home to a wide range of large brands and local specialist stores. The ‘nine streets’ district (Negan Straatjes) nestled between the canals is home to jewellery and vintage goods specialists. If you love antiques and art then you should head down to the Speigelkwartier. The area is busy with little specialist dealers and markets. High end fashion followers need look no further than P.C. Hoofstraat, the ultimate in exclusive shopping.
Amsterdam has some amazing flea markets – look out for the weekly market in Nieuwmarkt.
Things to see in Amsterdam
Start with a long walk along the canals, explore the flower market, and admire the gable fronted building dating back to the 17th century. Art lovers should make a point of visiting the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum down in Museumplein. The Artis Zoo out beyond Waterlooplein to the east is a great place to visit with the family. For a water level view of the city and historic canals, consider taking a boat cruise. The options are seemingly endless and a weekend trip will not seem enough. Make sure you leave time for some people watching from the windows of a grand café.
Try an evening cruise. Once the sun goes down the bridges and canal side houses light up giving the canals a magical feel.
This ‘brown café’ should be top of your list of bars to try during your visit to Amsterdam. The old part of the bar was established in 1670 and is pretty much unchanged due to the listed status it enjoys. Take a seat at the bar and soak up a little bit of old Amsterdam. The bar is on the edge of Spuistraat which sits on the Singel canal.
This amazing little restaurant is nestled in the heart of the Jordaan on Lindengracht. From the outside this is just another quirky little corner café but step inside and you are greeted by a top class restaurant serving fresh, exciting food that draws on both local and international influences.
King’s Day – April 27th
Prior to 2014 the whole nation would come together on the 30th April to celebrate the Queen’s official birthday with a huge party that spreads across the city with live music, parties and impromptu bars and food stalls. Queen’s Day has now become King’s Day as Willem-Alexander, the Queens oldest son has taken over the throne. The party is no less enthusiastic!

Good location but nothing special
Don Hill, South Yorkshire
This is a typical city centre hotel, an old building with small rooms. This is what you expect. The public rooms are quite dingy, the bedrooms a little lighter. The whole building is in need of a facelift. We opted to pay extra for the buffet breakfast, which was adequate at best. The 'continental' choice was passable, the 'hot breakfast' buffet was a disaster, lukewarm and poorly presented. They will cook you something fresh if you can find someone to do it. There is a TV programme broadcast live from the hotel brasserie every weekday evening, which means that the brasserie is out of bounds to guests. Not really a problem as there are dozens of restaurants in Rembrandtplein and the surrounding streets. Those In the square are more of the fast food type, but you only have to walk a few minutes to find some really nice places. There is a large selection of good restaurants on Utrecht street. Rembrandtsplein is a buzzing, cosmopolitan area in the evening and noise can be a problem for hotel guests. We had a room at the rear and had no problems. Beware also that the square is used to hold outdoor concerts. On the Tuesday of our stay the centre of the square was closed off, and by the Thursday a huge stage with loads of sound equipment was in place. Someone is going to have a very noisy weekend, so it would be worth checking if you dont like noise. On the positive side, the hotel staff are very friendly. Transport links to the rest of the city are excellent, theres plenty to see in the local area without using transport. My feelings about this hotel are quite neutral, but if I were to visit Amsterdam again I would stay somehere else.

Comfortable Hotel in great Location
Mike & Tina, Ireland
When we arrived we were greeted by wonderful staff. We booked a standard double room, so we're expecting a small room, but were pleasantly surprised to see a pretty spacious room with twin beds at rear of hotel. We didn't hear much noise and the live TV show did not affect us. The buffet breakfast each morning was more than adequate with a nice selection of fresh breads, cereal, fruit and cheese & ham. There was also an option to create an omelet or to order bacon and sausage from the server. We stayed for 3 nights from Thursday to Sunday and would stay again!
The best thing about my stay was...Breakfast, staff and spacious clean room with toiletteries, location was fantastic!

Stayed in nh schiller for 3 nights with 2 other couples. Staff are all so pleasant and helpful. Any requests are dealt with immediately and efficiently. Breakfast had good selection...omelettes are very good! Our room was on 5th floor overlooking square. There was some noise but didnt last too long into night.Rooms are very nice and comfortable. Highly recommend this hotel. We have already looked at booking it again later in year. I dont think another hotel could give a better service.
The best thing about my stay was...room with a view

Couldn't have been any better! Eveyone was so helpful, day time and night time staff. Breakfast was wonderful and much more choice than we were expecting. Room was great with a Fabulous view overlooking the square. Beds were so comfortable. Room temp was spot on. Shower was great, with a multi function spray. Coffee pod machine was also an unexpected bonus. Would recommend to anyone and can't wait to go back.

great all round
A weekend in Amsterdam made all the more special by the service from the Schiller. We were upgraded on arrival and only met with pleasant and helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble and our overall impression was very favourable. We accept that the Plein facing room will absorb a lot of the noise from late night revelers. However it is worth “the effort” for the view and the energy. The Hotel is located in probably the most central area possible and in walking distance from all major attractions. Value for money, we highly recommend this hotel. Our deal included breakfast which is otherwise charged at about €19.00. Possibly not worth it at this price, but certainly it hit the spot after a few late nights out and is user friendly rather than finding a café in the area. Thanks to the Schiller for a memorable weekend.
