Athens

One of the world’s oldest cities and the birthplace of Western civilisation, a holiday in Athens is a must-do for culture and history buffs. The Greek capital is a city of opposites – historic yet buzzing with cosmopolitan energy, grungy yet sophisticated.

World-famous sights

Traffic levels in the city centre have improved vastly since the Archaeological Promenade was built – an attractive tree-lined walkway linking all the major archaeological sites, including the famous Acropolis. Other sights not to be missed include Ancient Agora, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the lively flea market at Monastiraki.

Stay out late

When you’ve finished sightseeing there’s plenty to fill the evening with. Athens stays up when the rest of Europe has gone to bed – locals and tourists alike eat late at the open-air tavernas scattered all over the city, then party until sunrise at trendy beach clubs along the coast.

Visit Delphi

For those who want to spend a day outside the city, the ancient town of Delphi is a popular choice. The magnificent natural setting and fantastic experience of visiting the Temple of Apollo makes it well worth the drive to get there. There are also lots of tours available with pick-up and drop-off at your hotel.

Things to do in Athens

On the beach in Athens

As with many coastal cities, the beaches get better the further out of town you go. The best stretches are between Kavouri and Sounion, but as long as you avoid the harbour it’s fine to go swimming closer to Athens as well. You’ll find a great variety to choose from, including sandy beaches perfect for sunbathing and more secluded pebble beaches.

Top Tip:

The fish tavernas lining the coast are ideal for an authentic Greek eating experience.

Eat and drink in Athens

Athenians love to eat out, and in spite of the chic modern restaurants popping up all over the city, you’ll still find most of the locals in traditional Greek tavernas. These are the places to go for seasonal produce and fresh seafood in very generous quantities. Some of the best tavernas are located around the meat market in Aristogitonos.

Top Tip:

The locals tend to eat as late as 9 or 10pm, so you’ll find restaurants are quiet before then.

Athens nightlife

For a lively and glamorous night, head to the beach clubs between Piraeus and Glyfada – young Greeks flock here to drink and dance all night. If you’re still there in the morning, a dip in the sea will be especially refreshing!

Top Tip:

For a quieter experience and great views, why not try one of the rooftop bars in the city centre?

Shopping in Athens

For a unique shopping experience, Monastiraki is the place to go. You’ll find an eclectic mix of goods at the lively flea market, including handcrafted items. There are also plenty of cafes, restaurants and gelato stands in the area. It’s also central to the historic sites, so ideal for taking an afternoon out from sightseeing.

Top Tip:

There are lots of taxis parked around here, but if you’re taking one make sure it has GPS – a lost cabby is an expensive cabby!

Things to see in Athens

The number one sight in Athens has to be the Acropolis. It’s hard to beat the view from city to sea as you climb the hill to the Parthenon perched at the top. The Acropolis Museum is also a must-see and is easily as fascinating as the ruins themselves.

Top Tip:

Take bottled water and good shoes with you for the walk.

We Recommend

Dinner in the Sky

This is an experience like no other – but avoid if you’re afraid of heights! You’ll eat at a table suspended over 50m in the air, and naturally the views over Athens are fantastic. The waiters will help you take photos when they’re not busy serving up tasty Greek food.

Brettos

The beautiful interior of this bar makes it well worth a visit. The walls are lined with cases full of multi-coloured bottles backed by a warm orange glow, and the owners make their own liqueurs in over 30 flavours.

Athens and Epidaurus Festival

This annual celebration lasts the whole summer, with evening performances from May until October. It’s all about open-air theatre, both modern and traditional, and amazing musical performances. Book in advance for the best seats.
