Letterkenny Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Letterkenny

The largest town in Ireland’s County Donegal, Letterkenny sits around a half-hour drive from Londonderry. Home to historic 19th century buildings, museums and annual summer festivals, Letterkenny is also well-located for exploring more of the country’s most famous natural sights - including Giant’s Causeway.

Letterkenny has a full range of accommodation to suit all travel needs, whether you’re travelling solo or with friends, family or a loved one. Many of the hotels are conveniently located in the heart of town, providing a cosy home-away-from-home close to all the local sights.

Where to stay

Letterkenny

A vibrant town that’s known for the friendliness of locals, Letterkenny combines the best of all worlds: with contemporary shops and restaurants to hand, the town also offers visitors the chance to experience Irish life hundreds of years ago. As well as museums and wide open spaces, Letterkenny also has the River Swilly flowing through the centre of town, providing numerous opportunities for scenic, peaceful walks and river-side summer picnics.

The accommodation in Letterkenny is typically affordable and cosy, with boutique hotels sitting alongside family run B&Bs and 4* spa resorts. While much of the accommodation is located within the town centre, there are also a number of other hotels in nearby convenient locations, including near Letterkenny Golf Club.

What to see

Letterkenny lives up to its nickname of ‘the Cathedral Town’ by being home to the 19th century Cathedral of St. Eunan and St. Columba. It’s worth making a visit to see the beautiful interior, complete with stone arches and colourful stained glass windows. Another of the most popular things to do in Letterkenny is to head to the Donegal County Museum, found inside an old stone building in the middle of town. Formerly part of Letterkenny Workhouse in the 19th century, the museum now boasts a number of exhibitions showing what life was like in County Donegal from the prehistoric days onwards.

Other attractions on the outskirts of town include Newmills Corn and Flax Mills - a working corn mill that features one of the largest water wheels in Ireland - and Tropical World. Open from April through to September, Tropical World is a family friendly attraction that boasts a butterfly garden and a mini zoo. Animals include meerkats, lemurs, wallabies and a silver fox.

As well as the local sights, Letterkenny is also a fantastic base for those wanting to explore more of Ireland’s coastal areas. Londonderry is a half-hour drive away, while the mountains and lakes of Glenveagh National Park are around 25 minutes away. Adventure seekers will love the range of outdoor activities at Glenveagh National Park - there are a number of hiking trails and cycle paths as well as seasonal fishing opportunities. The UNESCO Heritage Site of Giant’s Causeway - with its basalt stone columns sculpted by volcanic eruptions 60 million years ago - can also be reached within an hour and a half.

Nightlife

If it’s an evening of craic you’re after, Letterkenny surely won’t disappoint. The town’s centre is where you’ll find a whole host of nightlife - mostly traditional pubs, inns and bars that feature live music, a cosy atmosphere and late-night closings no matter what day of the week it is. For more tranquil evenings out, Letterkenny also has plenty of restaurants and cafes, while An Grianán Theatre puts on a range of international and local performances from ballet through to comedy.

What to eat

There’s a restaurant for everyone in Letterkenny, whether you’re after top-notch Michelin-star food, a quick snack or traditional Irish dishes. Popular dishes to try include West Coast oysters, black pudding and hearty Irish stew, the latter made using lamb, onions and potatoes. Many of the restaurants take pride in using locally sourced ingredients, including fish, vegetables and beer. The Lemon Tree is one such restaurant that champions local providers: their Donegal tasting menu offers up seven courses all made using locally sourced ingredients.

Shopping

Letterkenny Shopping Centre sits in the heart of town, featuring a wide range of international stores all under one roof. From beauty salons to clothes shops and tech centres, you’re bound to find a whole range of bargains during your visit. If that’s not enough, The Courtyard Shopping Centre is less than a 15-minute walk away, boasting local and Irish-run stores. Main Street also features a selection of high street names and independent retailers, ensuring the opportunity to pick up some unique souvenirs and gifts.
