Do not go to Monastir Center!

We spend 2 weeks in Monastir Center with 3 kids (8, 10 and 13 years) and it was horrible! The buffet was lousy. If we came a little late, but still with 45 minutes to go, there was not much left and the quality of the food was bad. A lot of guests were sick!! The swimmingpool was dirty. Sometimes you couldn't even see the bottom. Animation only played waterpolo twice a day. Not to entertain the (95% Tunisian and Libian) guests, but mainly to play with each other in a very agressive way. I needed to get my kids out of the water! My husband and son got stuck in the elevator. There were fights in the hotel, because the security just let everybody walk in and out of the hotel and there is a public bar in the lobby downstairs. When we complained to the general manager he even threatened us! We've spend more than 15 holidays in Tunisia and never complained before, but Monastir Center was a very bad experience for us. We like to warn people who are thinking about choosing this hotel, that most of the hotels in Tunisia are way better and worth your money.

The best thing about my stay was...

the sun

At the price we paid, this was a great stay

Comfortable, large room overlooking the pool and courtyard. Toilet failed on first evening but was efficiently repaired next day. Plenty of variety and choice at breakfast. We ate there one evening, and again there was variety (and quantity!) with self service. Reception staff were helpful but not very forthcoming (preoccupied by the political situation?). We discovered the indoor pool in the basement - little used and very warm. Management could inform guests better about the facilities (no dinner menu/pricing for B&B customers; no info about the pool; no map of the area, or suggestions about local facilities [eg tennis at nextdoor hotel])

The best thing about my stay was...

Private balcony, quiet room.

Tranquil, sunny, central- best Christmas ever

I booked into the Monastir Center because it is recommended by the Rough Guide to Tunisia and we were not disappointed: our room was spacious and very clean - the maid came at least once a day to change the towels, she was very sweet. At breakfast there was plenty to choose from, always lovely fresh baguette and the chef will make you an omlette to order. We did not have dinner included, but on our first day we paid for lunch, and had enough choice even for a picky eater to find something. I would often sit on our balcony sunbathing and enjoying the tranquility - the frequent call of a rooster, the distant call to prayer from the mosque in town. We went over Xmas so the pool was way too cold (though some kids braved it!) but there is indoor pool; also the adjacent hotel Habib has a lovely big indoor pool with glass to the gardens and you can pay a little to use it. There were a couple of young men always greeting and chatting with the tourists and at first I thought they were gigolos but turnes out most Tunisian hotels have an 'animation team'. They are payed by the hotel to keep the guests entertained and happy, and are really not husseling but want to involve everyone as best as they can. They turned out to be very friendly and helpful, setting up table tennis for my teenage son and putting on little shows in the evenings. The room only had a small TV with BBC world news the only English channel so if you got teenagers make sure you bring PSP and charger! After reading reviews about being hussled all the time I was a little nervous to go to the market, but our experience was only good. Everyone was friendly and we felt safe at all times. Yes, they will invite you into their shops but that's part of how it's done and we were never pressured in any way. The only time we were overcharged was from the airport to the hotel: we arrived really late and I was too tired to argue much. You should pay about 20TD (£10), we paid double that but in the end just wanted to make it to the hotel. On the way back you can hail a taxi on the street outside the hotel: we only paid 10TD then. I recommend the hotel for its position: stay out in Skannes if you want an inclusive resort and don't want to leave the hotel. Stay at the Monastir Center if you want to explore a few cities and see some amazing Tunisian sights. Monastir is a small town and though it might be very busy in Summer, we experienced it as sleepy and comfortable, an easy entry to Arab culture. The train takes you to Sousse for 1TD (50p), the nearest big city, with a large noisy market and labyrinth streets, just as you imagined it. We also took it the other direction, to Mehdia, a most lovely little fishing town, with fantastic seafood restaurants and a cafe hanging over the cliff above the sea, truly magical. Also I recommend you exchange your money in the hotel: instead of trying to find a bank the hotel will give you the official exchange rate, are polite and right there for you. All the stuff I read about only using a bank is simply not true. There were many German tourists staying and most had been coming back for many years: I can see why they would choose the Monastir Center and how they enjoy being familiar with the staff. Waking up to bright blue skies in December was wonderful and I would go again and probably stay in the same hotel.

The best thing about my stay was...

guaranteed fantastic weather to explore and relax

4 stars are too much

This Hotel is a good solution for an all inclusive week. Otherwise the service, the cleaning, the equippement, the rooms are less than we expected, moreover part of the staff was untrained to cope with the different request of people. On the other hand the great center location make this hotel the ideal base to visit the sourranding area.

The best thing about my stay was...

the bouffet breakfast was various

Nice stay but more a 3*

Nice looking hotel with lovely pool area. Bed and breakfast was included in our stay which was quite good. A selection of hot and cold dishes were available with a chef who was making fresh omelette on request. Staff were friendly and helpful. The room was very nice with TV (no satellite) but the bed had the hardest mattress in the world which resulted in me getting out of bed every morning bent over like a 95 year old!!! Apart from that our stay was very nice and i would certainly stay there again. Having been a regular visitor to Tunisia (every 3 months) this accommodation was very nice compared to some of the places i have stayed.

mr

The hotel is nice and is right in the centre of Monastir, which is a lovely little town. The room isn't as nice as the rest of the hotel, unfortunately. Having stayed at other 4-star hotels in Tunisia, I was quite disappointed with the standard (everything is half broken, there is no room service, no safe in the room, toiletries .. well not up to 4-star hotels!!, the bathroom was also in a state, and the water works on and off). I called the reception to ask if they had a laundry service (no information in the room!) and they told me yes. so I asked if I could have a pricelist (in Tunisia you should always check prices first as they might ask you exorbitant amounts after, that is why I wanted to have a guarantee on what I was going to pay). It took forever and in the end no list was given to me but the manager took my laundry and told me they would not have charged me to apologise - which was obviously not the point for me. I said I did not want any discount, I just wanted to know the price!! Everywhere you go, before paying or ordering, you should know the cost. Right or wrong? Well, not at the Monastir centre. So they treated me (I think) like a crazy complainer, which really I am not, but I just wanted to have my clothes washed after two weeks in Tunisia! But well... So this was a downer to be honest. Obviously, the price of a night at this hotel is not the same as the price for a night at the Hilton, so I understand the service and the quality are what they are, but I strongly believe you can find a better room than the one I had even at this price. So in a nutshell, the hotel is very nice looking, nice lobby, nice pool, nice views from the room, if only the room was in a better condition ..
