Resort Info

Naples (Italy)

Naples is Italy’s third largest city and the largest city in southern Italy. With world-renowned historical and archaeological sites, plentiful dark blue sea and culinary expertise, there is never a dull moment in Naples. With its myriad of candy-coloured buildings and breathtaking landscapes, this beautiful place is certainly one to tick off your bucket list.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Naples offers something for everyone, and its historic centre is a perfect example of this. The centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of Europe’s most ancient cities, home to monumental treasures including Church of Santa Chiara and Castel Nuovo. The layout of the narrow streets, piazzas, churches and castles make up this beautiful city’s unique charm. It is recommended to visit Museo Archaeologico Nazionale if you are interested in a little bit of history. Here you will find some beautiful mosaics as well as an astonishing collection of artefacts from Pompeii.

Mount Vesuvius

Vesuvius is Europe’s only remaining active volcano overlooking Naples city. The volcano is well-known for its eruption in A.D 79 devastating the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum where thousands of people were killed. Mount Vesuvius has been listed as a national park since 1955 and is now a popular attraction amongst tourists visiting Naples and other surrounding areas. The park has a selection of nature trails winding around and up to the volcano which are great if you love to hike. Alternatively you can take a 4x4 the rest of the way up to the summit to admire the amazing views of the crater with steam rising from the cracks. Hire an audio guide for a true insight into the history of Mount Vesuvius.

Things to do in Naples

On the beach in Naples

The city of Naples is balanced on a small bay and its beaches along the Gulf are generally rocky, so if you are looking to relax on soft sand, it’s recommended that you take a day trip to nearby Ischia. You can catch a ferry there from the bay, and it’s the ideal place to kick back, relax and enjoy the intense blue sea washing up on the long stretches of honey-coloured sand backed by rich green hills.

Top Tip:  The main beaches in Ischia are very popular and can sometimes get busy. Ischia is full of secluded coves, so take a walk (or a water-taxi) to discover some beaches which are more peaceful.

Eat and drink in Naples

Naples is bursting with some of the best food in Italy and is the birthplace of the world-famous Neapolitan Pizza.  Naples is a heaven for die-hard pizza fans and you’re never too far from an oven serving up freshly made pizzas with the delicious baking aromas filling the air.  However it is not all about the pizza. The rich volcanic soil together with the warm climate, make for the perfect conditions to grow some of Italy’s highest quality fruit and vegetables such as the San Marzano tomato grown at the base of Mount Vesuvius. Naples is at the heart of the coffee culture, so begin the day with a fresh Italian coffee whether it be a ristretto or an espresso, or take a break from all the walking in a quaint coffee shop to enjoy a traditional latte or cappuccino. You must also stop by a gelato parlour and choose your favourite fruity or creamy ice cream.

Top Tip: Street food is becoming increasingly popular in Naples, and at reasonable prices, this is a perfect way to fill yourself up whilst on the go.

Naples Nightlife

Naples is a bustling city with one of the most energetic nightlife scenes in Italy, and is home to a wide variety of establishments from sophisticated wine bars to booming nightclubs. Parts of the city offer different kinds of nightlife from cheesy Italian bars down narrow streets, to lively modern venues in Via Cisterna dell’Olio. Piazza Bellini boasts some brilliant bars where you can enjoy live music and there are also many restaurants, bars and nightclubs near the docks.

Top Tip: Many top clubs and bars close in July and August and move to out of town open air locations where the parties will continue.

Shopping in Naples

Naples is one of Italy’s less expensive cities and you can make a choice between shopping for high-end designer brands in Via Dei Mille or Via Chiaia, or head to the lower-priced shops in Via Roma, one of Naple’s longest shopping streets where you will find cheaper stores such as boutiques and chains, and maybe even pick up a bargain at a flea market.

Top Tip: Watch out for people standing on corners of the street trying to sell goods, usually gadgets for unbelievably cheap prices. This scam is popular in Naples, usually targeting tourists.

Things to see in Naples

Naples is a cultural melting pot, and no trip is complete without a tour of the ancient ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the two Roman cities destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D 79. The cities were covered in six metres of ash and lava which crushed homes and buildings. Today, the ruins have been uncovered so that visitors can experience a taste of what Roman life was like by walking down the streets and browsing around old houses, shops and temples to see a recreation of the past. When you buy your ticket, you can also opt for an audio guide where you can follow the map provided and visit the numbers posted around the site, narrating useful information allowing you to make the most of your trip.

Another popular attraction to visit in Naples is the Palazzo Real or the Royal Palace to see how the other half lived. Located in central Naples, the entry price is reasonable and you can observe a fair share of exquisite décor and stunning tapestries and artwork. The grand staircase is also sure to make your jaw drop!

Top Tip: Trying to tackle both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day may be tricky. It is recommended that you spend a whole day in Pompeii, and make a separate trip to Herculaneum.
