Budapest Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Budapest

From popular cheaper chains to boutique hotels, your stay in Hungary’s capital of Budapest can be as luxurious or budget-friendly as you like. This artistic city has a range of accommodation options for solo travellers, friends, families and couples, making it a holiday destination to suit all.

Split in half by the winding River Danube, Budapest is a vibrant city that’s made up of stunning architecture, geothermal springs and unmissable view spots. Whether you visit for the Christmas markets or at the height of summer, Budapest a destination that will delight visitors of all ages and all tastes.

Where to stay

District V

If you’re looking to be in the middle of all the sights during your holiday, District V is the place to be. As the tourist centre of Budapest, District V is home to several large hotels as well as dozens of delicious restaurants, bars and shops. You’ll have the iconic Hungarian Parliament building on your doorstep, as well as Liberty Square and endless museums. District V also has a buzzing nightlife, and handily leaves you just a short walk away from all the sights across the river and further out of the city.

District VII

District VII is well known for being the city’s lively and artistic hub. As Budapest’s Jewish Quarter, it’s also rich with history - you can’t miss the Dohány Street Synagogue, built in the mid-19th century and now officially Europe’s largest synagogue. Hotels in this district will leave you perfectly situated for exploring the thermal spas, museums and shopping centres - and you’ll also be slap bang in the middle of all the city’s ruin bars.

District I

Located on the left hand side of the River Danube, a holiday in District I offers a quieter stay in Budapest. This is where you’ll find the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Castle District, which contains both the Buda Castle and the Fisherman’s Bastion. It’s also home to a number of lesser-known thermal baths including Rudas Baths and Gellert Thermal Bath just a short walk away from most hotels in the area.

What to see

Budapest is a city that’s rich with history and cultural hotspots, so you’ll never be short of things to see and do during your holiday. After a wander along the River to see the striking Hungarian Parliament building and the moving Shoes on the River Danube Bank memorial, you’ll be in the heart of the city. Take a tour of the Hungarian State Opera, and soak up the free views of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, one of the most famous sights in Budapest.

Whatever the weather, no trip to Budapest is complete a trip to one of the many thermal baths. Széchenyi Thermal Bath to the north of the city centre is the most well-known. It’s home to 21 indoor and outdoor pools ranging in temperatures from 18°C to 40°C, with room to take in a few laps or just to simply enjoy a soak. Fisherman's Bastion, over the other side of the River, is another unmissable spot. The panoramic viewing terrace has fairy tale turrets and archways, and offers the best views across Budapest.

Nightlife

Budapest has a lot to offer in the way of lively nightlife; millions flock to the city every year for a holiday to enjoy the inexpensive, eclectic after-dark entertainment. The ruin bars, so called for their locations in dilapidated buildings, are dotted around the city and are a must visit. Szimpla Kert is one of the most famous ruin bars, featuring a warren of little rooms filled with mismatched furniture, live music and eclectic art. There’s also plenty of other nightlife to keep you busy, too, from casinos to bars, nightclubs and even parties in the thermal spas!

What to eat

From hearty meals to sweet treats, Budapest has its fair share of delicious food for you to sink your teeth into. As the national dish of Hungary, goulash is probably one of the most popular meals around. It’s usually made with beef and vegetables, and is seasoned with a touch of paprika for a warming kick. For dessert, try a dobos torte - a delicious sponge cake layered with chocolate buttercream and topped with caramel. Or, treat yourself to a Kürtoskalács, a hollow cake that resembles a chimney, and which can be personalised with everything from cinnamon to Nutella – you are on holiday after all!

Shopping

The vibrant Váci street is one of the most well-known shopping areas in Budapest, and features everything from souvenir shops to high street stores and local crafts. The stylish WestEnd City Center is another of Budapest’s shopping havens. It’s got floors of international and local shops, as well as plenty of food stalls to keep your energy levels up.

Ideal location

Stayed for 2 nights in the mercure city centre hotel. Lovely clean hotel with fantastic location. Only glitch was been given a twin room rather than a double, this was rectified immediately but with no apology from the staff member. Otherwise everything was perfect. Would definitely recommend.

Tripper

Staff excellent, breakfast was excellent, but the room was small. Double bed was twin bed, order was double bed. We had requested non-smoking room, the room was for smokers???. Every mornig we wake up half past five because of terrible noise from back yard .

Valentine's visit

Cool in Uk but freezing in Budapest. It feels 10 degrees colder than it says. Hotel good value and staff excellent. No problems and alpha rooms got a good deal for me.I Am about to book a couple of days in London with them. Hotel Mercure not really 4 star but breakfast very good and rooms adequate though bar area cold as by doors to outside. Been to a lot of cities but wont be back to Budapest - outside the hotel nothing is open in winter and u8nfortunately no signs in English or other european languages to help with directions. No maps in metro stations but thankfully the local estate agent on Andrassy was very helpful and told us to use the 4 and 6 tram to explore the city - it would have been good if we could have found a customer information centre open. Also found restaurants over expensive for wines and the wine not good - give me Prague or Barcelona any day.

Review of 'TAVERNA'

You would be hard pushed to find a better location for a hotel in Budapest. It's in the centre of the main shopping district and close to the metro and bus services for easy access to other parts of the city. Just a couple of hundred metres from the hotel was a wonderful outdoor market selling crafts, some delicious local food and warm mulled wine.

The hotel itself was clean and comfortable, though the room was disappointingly small. The bathroom was particularly tiny, big enough only for a shower and unfortunately not very well soundproofed either (take care if sharing the room!).

Breakfast was the standard buffet fare and more than adequate. The adjoining cafe on the ground floor does an excellent hot chocolate!

I think the four star rating is rather generous in comparison to other four star places I've stayed at. Had I not got an excellent discount through Alpharooms and paid the full rate I think I would have felt a bit cheated, but if location is high on your list of needs and then Taverna should be seriously considered.

Very nice hotel, great location for getting around and seeing everything. Went to budapest for 3 nights 4 days, but 2 nights would be enough to see all the sights. Very nice place but i would not want to vist again, but in all we had a nice time.

Review of 'TAVERNA'

I stayed in the Hotel Taverna at the end of August 2006. The location is spectacular for someone who enjoys getting out of the hotel and walking the famous Vaci Utca. Short distance to metro and other public transport. The room was clean and modern, bathroom very small but staff very accommodating and a pleasure to deal with (except a breakfast waiter Atila who was rude and intimidating). Breakfast was delicious & plentiful. Great variety of intercontinental as well as typical hungarian dishes. Free internet in the lobby. I totally and without any reservation recommend this hotel as an excellent choice in Budapest.

The Taverna was very centrally located in a pedestrianised area near the river Danube amidst restaurants and shops. Excellently placed for sightseeing and shopping. Rooms are modern and comfortable and staff helpful and friendly. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Review of 'TAVERNA'

This is a fantastic hotel. It is very central being right in the middle of the main shopping area (Vaci Street). The rooms are very clean and modern and the food was good.

The hotel is also very close to an underground station and the main bus routes.

If you are travelling by train into the main station (Keleti Pu) you can just get on the number 7 bus and get off after 2 stops which drops you about 200 yards from the hotel.

I would definitely return to the hotel because of the fantastic location, good value and helpfulness of the staff.

Can't recommend enough!
