An old friend in sad decline

I booked this hotel mainly on price and position, and it was only later that I discovered that my wife and myself had been there twice some years ago, when it went under the name of the Comfort Inn. We had been looking forward to staying there again, but we were very disappointed. I have to say first of all that the room was clean (except for a stained carpet) and that the staff were pleasant. The towels were changed each day (although there was only ever one hand towel between us) and there was the usual complement of free soaps and shower gels. What was missing, however, was a general lack of organisation, and a need for some TLC. There were tea- and coffee-making facilities in the room, but the tea-bags were not replaced after they had been used, nor was there ever any milk supplied. There was no information booklet in the room to explain about how to get in touch with the front desk, or about rules of the hotel (see later). The breakfast, although adequate, was simply not up to the standard that it used to be: there was no choice of different breads, no muesli, no pots of fruit yoghurt, no salad to go with the cold meat (and no choice of cold meat, either). For two of our three breakfasts there was no hot food available at all, although on the third there were hot sausages, but no beans to go with them. On the first day my wife picked up a tea-cup with a crack down the whole of one side, and on the final day she picked one with dust round the rim. In the foyer there is a round seat at which a group can sit, perhaps while waiting for a coach: there was a triangular tear in the fabric about four inches on a side. There was also a broken tile on the floor of the foyer by the door, which left a three inch hole that you could easily trip over. On our second night we came back to the hotel at about 11:45 to find that the front door was locked, and it took us nearly five minutes playing on the door buzzer before we could attract anyone's attention to let us in. The following night we arrived an hour earlier wanting to have a drink at the bar, but were told simply that the bar was closed, even though one of the two people behind the reception desk could easily have got up to serve us (and bear in mind that the weather had been unusually hot, and we were absolutely gasping). The final insult was when we came to check out and we asked them to store our cases for a few hours while we went out, before our taxi came to pick us up. We were charge, CHARGED, one euro per case for the privilege. Now we have travelled all over Europe for many many years, and have stayed in hotels of all grades from 3-star upwards, and we have never, repeat never, been asked to pay extra for what is surely one of the things that a helpful hotel would naturally do for free as a natural courtesy.

The best thing about my stay was...

We had glorious weather
