Mackays Hotel in Wick gives you the perfect base from which to explore this largely unspoilt region and only a ferry ride away from the beautiful Orkney Islands. From the grandeur of The Castle of Mey home to the Queen Mother for many years to the simplicity of the coastal views and isolated beaches the variety of things to do and see within a short drive of Wick will amaze you. Caithness is a bird watching paradise with birds of many species. Caithness has over 4000 monuments and castle ruins dating from Prehistoric time's right up the more recent Highland Clearances era. Most are not signposted but simply ask at reception for a map and directions to enjoy a wonderful passage through time. Entry to castle and monument sites are in the main free. Visit the nearby Distillery where the local Whisky Pulteney is created and enjoy a relaxing tour that allows you to sample the wonderful malt and liquer on offer. Wick is easily accessed from Glasgow Edinburgh and Aberdeen and is just off the main A9 route to Thurso. From Glasgow take the A82 to Fort Williams then to Inverness join the main A9 route north. From Edinburgh take the M90 North to Perth then join the A9 Perth to Inverness and Wick. From Aberdeen the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness then the A9 to Thurso. The highlands can be accessed by these three main arterial routes. From Inverness you will enter Wick by the South road (stay on this road). Further up this road there are crossroads and a set of traffic lights. Go straight on. The road will take you to a mini roundabout take the third turning then immediate right down the one-way street (Union Street) Mackays is located on the left hand side.
