QUIET BUT CLEAN

Excellent service in rooms and restaurant. Would recommend to go bed and breakfast as half board buffet meals only. Even though I had paid for 14 nights half board after 3 nights I couldn't bear another buffet and just went to nearby restaurants - hence a complete waste of £20 per night,

Everything a hotel should be!

We only stayed one night, unfortunately, and would love to return some day. The leisure facilities were wonderful, outdoor pools and an indoor pool where you could swim outside as well. The sauna and steam room were both good. The rooms were spacious and the beds very comfortable. The only down side was the cooked breakfast which was cold. There were, however, plenty of other choices. The service was excellent, especially the reception staff who let us into our room early as we only had one day.

The various elements of the hotel accommodation were as expected which is why, as a family, this was our third visit. Staf were helpful and friendly, standard of accommodation was excellent, etc...however, there was a major negative, where the management fell far short of what one expects in this standard of accommodation. I shall explain. On Friday 5th March my wife was taken ill when visiting the Head of Immigration in Funchal. She retured to the Pestana. I was hosted to lunch by the Minister for Human Resources Dr de Castro and returned to the Hotel at 16.00hrs. I started to feel unwell and went to bed, sleeping for two hours. I woke at 18.00hs and started being ill....which continued all night. We both slept most of Saturday. On the Sunday my wife felt well enough to visit friends in Curral for a short time. However I remained at the hotel feeling very unwell and slept. This feeling continued on the Monday morning. At this stage we both believed that possible water contamination had been the possible cause, having been alerted to this by a hotel note in the room. At around lunchtime I went to reception and was informed that a doctor had visited because other guests and even staff had also been ill. The doctor had given an assurance that it was not caused by the water but by a virus "which had been brought from the UK"! At this point I realised that we had probably been infected by the Norovirus. The Head of Immigration kindly assisted by obtaining appropriate medication from a Chemist. The first day that I felt reasonably able to leave the hotel was on Thursday 11th March. I believe that the Hotel failed in so many aspects of keeping such an infection to a minimum. Firstly we were not informed on arrival that staff and other guests had been infected. This resulted in our own lack of response in informing the hotel at an early stage of our own illness and thereby reducing the risk of the infection being spread by cleaning and other staff etc. I effectively "lost" the ability to enjoy my holiday from Friday afternoon to the following Thursday. This was therefore totally wasted including the cost of car rental for this period. Had we been informed about the hotel experience and risk we would have been in a position to "treat" our infection with greater urgency and minimise the negative impact on our holiday. In the light of the above can you please tell me why we should be persuaded to return to the Pestana Group of Hotels for a future holiday visit?
