Rio de Janeiro Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Rio de Janeiro

Whether you want to be close to the golden beaches or in the thick of the city action, hotels in Rio de Janeiro encompass every possibility. The majority of the accommodation lines the beaches, where there’s a handful of 5-star luxe lodging thrown in amongst more budget options. However, there’s also a number of hotels a few streets further inland, offering easy access to the main, Brazilian tourist sights as well as the beaches.

With warm weather throughout the year, Rio de Janeiro is an ideal destination for holidaymakers looking for sun, sea and sand - with more than a sprinkling of charm and world-famous views. Whether you’re ringing in the New Year on Copacabana Beach, partying in the streets during February’s Carnival, or just soaking up the city during the summer, you’re bound to have a trip to remember.

Where to stay

Ipanema

Found to the south of Rio de Janeiro, Ipanema encompasses dozens of hotels making the most of the neighbourhood’s prime location sandwiched between the beach and the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. Staying around this area will leave you no more than just a few minutes’ walk from the city’s golden shores, although expect to pay a premium for hotels right next to the beach. Ipanema is also home to many of the city’s best restaurants and bars, making it an ideal spot to visit in the evenings on your holiday.

Copacabana

The accommodation options around Copacabana beach are plentiful, with everything from homely, cheap inns to luxury hotels with all the trimmings. Of course, staying in this area during your holiday will leave you close by to the world-famous beach, although be prepared for large crowds of tourists and souvenir shops! This neighbourhood also offers great transport links to the surrounding areas.

Urca

Located at the foothills of Sugarloaf Mountain, Urca is a quieter area of Rio that offers up sweeping views of Guanabara Bay. It’s not quite as beach-orientated as other neighbourhoods, although it does have a few smaller beaches dotted around alongside some vibrant waterfront bars.

What to see

From big tourist attractions to perfect beaches, Rio de Janeiro has got it all. The iconic Christ the Redeemer sits atop Mount Corcovado, and looms over the city. Hike, catch a train or jump in a van up to the top of mountain, and marvel at beautiful views across city roofs, beaches and distant islands. Another one for those with a head for heights on holiday is the 396-metre Sugarloaf Mountain, accessible via a cable car or hiking trail. Located on a peninsula that juts out into the ocean, Sugarloaf Mountain provides an alternative view of the city - and, of course, Christ the Redeemer.

Copacabana beach is busy all year round, but especially at key events throughout the year, including the famous carnival and New Year white beach parties. Once you’ve walked on the beach’s famous sands, try out some of the other spectacular beaches in the region, including Ipanema and Praia Vermelha. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, consider a day trip to the picture-perfect beaches in the nearby village of Buzios. If beaches aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty to see and do - say hello to the local wildlife at the Tijuca Forest National Park, swing by the city’s science museum aptly named The Museum of Tomorrow, and admire the colonial architecture of the Carioca Aqueduct.

Nightlife

Found a half-hour drive from Copacabana beach, the neighbourhood of Lapa has a burgeoning nightlife scene that’s suitably bohemian. As well as its traditional bars, it has a number of other options up its sleeve, including dance halls, nightclubs and open-air samba parties held underneath the Arcos da Lapa aqueduct. Unsurprisingly, Copacabana has plenty of partying opportunities too. There’s everything from quirky nightclubs to casual beachside bars and pubs serving a variety of craft beers.

What to eat

Take a wander off the beaches for a minute on holiday and you’ll find that Rio de Janeiro has a thrilling culinary scene. Fresh juice bars are found on almost every street corner, with a juice made from acai berry being a must-try. Street food is another big speciality, with light snacks including pipoca, popcorn flavoured with either bacon or caramel, and pastel, a deep-fried pastry that’s stuffed with your choice of chicken, beef or cheese. Carnivores should be sure to swing by a traditional barbecue restaurant, known as a churrascaria, for scrumptious grilled meat.

Shopping

From unique crafts to must-have clothing and handmade jewelry, the Hippie Fair Crafts Market in Ipanema is the place to head to for gifts. Held every Sunday, the street fair comes alive with vendors selling all sorts of arts and crafts. If it’s multiple shops under one roof you’re after, Rio has plenty of shopping centres too - around the city centre the key ones are Shopping Rio Sul and Shopping Leblon.
