Amsterdam

The historic centre of Amsterdam plays host to a huge number of visitors each year. The list of reasons to visit this beautiful city is long and varied. The relatively compact centre is packed with historical buildings, picturesque canals and cultural hotspots. From the wonderfully quirky, laid back Jordaan in the west to the old centre and Nieuwmarkt in the east, Amsterdam is a great city to walk around. If you arrive via the vast Centraal Station, the city spreads out in front of you. Follow the mighty Damrak down to Dam Square and beyond towards Vondelpark and Museumplein in the south. The canals will either confuse or guide you. The centre of the city extends as far as the fourth canal in the inner ring – Prinsengracht. The four main canals sweep around the old city before colliding with the River Amstel to the east.

Leafy Vondelpark

Art and history lovers will be spoilt for choice in Amsterdam. See the work of Dutch Masters including Van Gogh and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum before paying an emotional visit to the Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht in the heart of the Jordaan. If you are in Amsterdam on a sunny day you should head down to the leafy Vondelpark. There is a lovely café and restaurant but you could just pick up some food and find a little patch of shady grass to stretch out on. Fully recharged you can head into the centre of Amsterdam and take advantage of the wide range of cafes, bars, restaurants and clubs.

Things to do in Amsterdam

Eat and drink in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a large, international city and you can eat what you want, when you want. The main streets running through the centre of the city are busy with a wide range of restaurants and bars. For a more intimate and authentic experience, head west into the Jordaan. This area of the city has resisted the excesses of modern life and held onto a more independent, artisan approach to living. The bars on every corner are cosy and welcoming with simple menus and drinks on offer. Local restaurants and cafes are tucked away on the little lanes leading across the four main canals. The Spui is home to larger grand cafes where well-dressed locals mingle with visitors to the city. The food and service is more polished with the added benefit of some excellent people watching opportunities. The area around Nieuwmarkt is home to a good range of great value restaurants.

Top Tip:

Try the local speciality - Rijsttafel. A colonial inspired Indonesian feast consisting of a huge range of small dishes. Make sure you are hungry – there can be as many as forty separate dishes served up!

Amsterdam nightlife

The city is busy with bars and clubs and you will find somewhere that plays the music you like on most days of the week. The bars are open late and very busy at the weekend. Head down to Leidseplein for a drink. The square is lined with popular bars and a mixed crowd. The area offers a bit of late fun for all – you will find several large live music venues including Melkweg and the Sugar Factory as well as the casino and a wide range of theatres. Nearby Rembrandtplein is a good alternative and perhaps better suited to visitors looking for a late night clubbing experience. You will find a good range of large, popular bars as well as large clubs including Escape and Studio 80.

Shopping in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is great city to shop in. The picturesque streets leading through the centre are lined with both large department stores and boutiques selling more exclusive goods. The Magna Plaza in Dam Square is worth a visit. This former main post office building is a beautiful piece of architecture from the outside. Step inside the ancient walls and the interior is a multi-level shopping paradise. Beyond Dam Square, Kalverstraat is home to a wide range of large brands and local specialist stores. The ‘nine streets’ district (Negan Straatjes) nestled between the canals is home to jewellery and vintage goods specialists. If you love antiques and art then you should head down to the Speigelkwartier. The area is busy with little specialist dealers and markets. High end fashion followers need look no further than P.C. Hoofstraat, the ultimate in exclusive shopping.

Top Tip:

Amsterdam has some amazing flea markets – look out for the weekly market in Nieuwmarkt.

Things to see in Amsterdam

Start with a long walk along the canals, explore the flower market, and admire the gable fronted building dating back to the 17th century. Art lovers should make a point of visiting the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum down in Museumplein. The Artis Zoo out beyond Waterlooplein to the east is a great place to visit with the family. For a water level view of the city and historic canals, consider taking a boat cruise. The options are seemingly endless and a weekend trip will not seem enough. Make sure you leave time for some people watching from the windows of a grand café.

Top Tip:

Try an evening cruise. Once the sun goes down the bridges and canal side houses light up giving the canals a magical feel.

We Recommend

Café Hoppe

This ‘brown café’ should be top of your list of bars to try during your visit to Amsterdam. The old part of the bar was established in 1670 and is pretty much unchanged due to the listed status it enjoys. Take a seat at the bar and soak up a little bit of old Amsterdam. The bar is on the edge of Spuistraat which sits on the Singel canal.

Daalder

This amazing little restaurant is nestled in the heart of the Jordaan on Lindengracht. From the outside this is just another quirky little corner café but step inside and you are greeted by a top class restaurant serving fresh, exciting food that draws on both local and international influences.

King’s Day – April 27th

Prior to 2014 the whole nation would come together on the 30th April to celebrate the Queen’s official birthday with a huge party that spreads across the city with live music, parties and impromptu bars and food stalls. Queen’s Day has now become King’s Day as Willem-Alexander, the Queens oldest son has taken over the throne. The party is no less enthusiastic!

8/10 Great

Boutique Hotel in nice area

This hotel is in a nice area well away from the red light district but close to the Liedesplein and shops, restaurants etc. The staff in the hotel were amazing, always helpful and polite. The breakfast was well worth the experience, soft music, good food lots of choice. The decor downstairs was in a boutique style very classy and clean. The bedroom was fine, clean and quiet (we were on the 5th floor though) A nice experience for us.

Review of 'VONDEL'

Although the Vondel is a 20/25 minute walk from the railway station, it is very close to a buzzing little centre with some great bars and restaurants only a 2 minute walk away. The hotel is situated in a quiet street and has a relaxed feel about it.

However our own experience was mixed. We were in an annex and had to enter & exit by a differnet door off the street. The bedrooms were far too small with hardly enough room to move around in and the room as well as the entrance way were in the main depressingly decorated in very dark colours.

The bathroom was also too small and the shower was dissapointing. The ventilation in the bathroom was non existant and only one window in the bedroom would open therefore giving the bedroom a bit of a damp feel.

On the plus side the breakfast was good, the service excellent and there is a fantastic private garden area to the rear in which to relax with a drink.

I wouldn't neccassarily put people off from staying here as they might experience things a bit differently but next time we visit we would not stay here again. Mainly because of the size of the bedroom and bathroom.

Review of 'VONDEL'

Perfect location, small room but great modern furnishings, good size ensuite, very clean, fluffy towels, very comfortable bed. Breakfast was amazing, fresh croissants, pancakes, bacon, egg,6 types of juice, very friendly staff. The only downside was the Americans in the room next door who talked and laughed from 4.30am-6.30am, the person in reception did ring them twice to ask them to be quiet-so any americans reading this ,if you have jet lag and cant sleep go and sit in the pretty reception lounge to chat.

Lovely Hotel in a terrace which meant that the room we had was easy to get in and out as it was at street level. The room was warm clean and spacious. The food was excellent and the staff could not do enough for you. We will go back anytime we can.

The Hotel Vondel is clean, modern and in a great location. Situated within walking distance of Vondelpark and the Rijks, Van Gogh, and Stedelijk Museums.

From Leidseplein, which is a 5 minute walk from the hotel, you can catch a tram. Ideal for exploring Amsterdam or getting to Central Station.

The hotel also offers a great range of breakfast foods, hot or cold/English or continental. And to top it all off, the staff were friendly and helpful too!

Review of 'VONDEL'

I was very disappointed with this Hotel, I very much would dispute that its a 4star hotel and from experience have stayed in nicer 3 star hotels in the area.
The hotel is split into two parts that have to be accessed from the road, therefore when you want to have breakfast you first have to walk along the road to another building.
The room we stayed in (standard double) was tiny, really very small. The walls and chairs were grubby. The en suite was okay in size, however the towels they provided were filthy.
We had arranged through the hotel to book a taxi to take us the the airport the day before we were due to leave, It did not turn up nor did we receive an appology.
I regret choosing this hotel and will not stay again.

Absolutely Marvellous!

I can not fault this hotel. Despite having lots of building work done at present, it didn't disrupt my stay there. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left four days later, we had the best possible service we could have asked for. Friendly, helpful and responsive staff. Our hotel safe didn't work but staff were apologetic, gave us a safe to use in reception and got the safe repaired by the following day. The room was spectacular - very contemporary and spotlessly clean. We felt like royality, with our complimentary slippers, bath robe and bottled water! Breakfast too was faultless and served in a delightful 60's retro dining room with contemporary stainless steel serving bay. Choice of food was great - everything from healthy fruit, cereal and yoghurts to spoil yourself pancakes, bacon and eggs! The kitchen staff were efficient and more than happy to assist you. Once completion of the work and as long as i could stay for longer next time, i would rate this hotel 5/5. Excellent location too - just outside the hussle and bustle of the city but only a two min walk to bars and restaurants and then tram stop to take you back to central station for your train back to Schipol. I WILL BE RETURNING SOON!

Review of 'VONDEL'

Expedia and other sites are promoting this as a 4 star hotel but I'm afraid that's a long way off yet. The rooms are small and the carpets and the bottoms of walls are dirty. You are greeted with an apologetic note in each room about the state of the hotel and it goes on to say that new carpets, DVD players etc will all be installed by the end of 2006. I upgraded to a superior suite which was just as well as the standard rooms are under the bars dance floor which is open until 1am each day. A guest I met told me that it was impossible to sleep in that room until around 2am as after the bar closes the amount of clattering around from tidying up the bar etc made his ceiling light jump and clang.

But the real problem is the construction work which is going on. Diggers which drill through the front of the hotel each morning means you'll be in for an early start if you like it or not as the owners convert the hotel.

Since 2 buildings are being joined with the purchase and renovation of the middle one the hotel is full of mice. After complaining about the mice in our room we were handed free breakfast tokens which allowed us to have breakfast with the mice which ran around the restaurant floor while we ate!

A thoroughly unpleasant stay in what should be a 3 star hotel (which should really be closed whilst they carry out this level of renovation)

My advise, holidays are precious, pay the extra and stay in the Marriot, Golden Tulip or the Jolly.
