With clear waters, golden sand and sunshine all year round, Fethiye is perfect for beach lovers. This bustling harbour town is located on Turkey’s beautiful Aegean Coast, right at the foot of the Taurus Mountains. Fethiye was built amongst the ruins of Telmessos, offering visitors a mix of ancient architecture and modern luxury and activities to suit all ages and tastes.

Old meets new

Fethiye’s charming old town, with its white-washed mosques, winding cobbled streets and little Turkish cafés, contrasts with the stylish marina filled with bars, seafood restaurants and yachts to admire. Everything had to be re-built after a devastating earthquake in the fifties so most of the buildings are modern, but you can still find the fascinating remnants of ancient buildings scattered around town. For an even bigger taste of history, you can visit the ghost town of Kayakoy, which is located 8km south of Fethiye.

Take a day trip

The Blue Lagoon is only half an hour’s drive away in Oludeniz, and is one of Turkey’s most well-known beaches. You can take part in water sports or just relax and admire the dazzling scenery, with turquoise water, white sand and a backdrop of lush green forests and mountains.

Things to Do in Fethiye

On the beach in Fethiye

It’s only a quick water taxi trip to the beach at Calis, which is just across the bay. It’s the perfect place to kick back and unwind, with soft sand shelving gently into the sea and a great choice of bars and restaurants along the whole stretch. If you’re keen to explore, why not take a boat trip in a traditional wooden gullet, or admire the sea life in a glass-bottomed vessel?

Top Tip:

If you wander a little further down the coast you can find some smaller coves hidden away – perfect for a quieter spot to sunbathe with a good book.

Eat and drink in Fethiye

Fethiye is home to lots of authentic Turkish restaurants, most serving cuisine made with local produce. As a coastal town, naturally the freshest seafood is at the top of the list – enjoy the catch of the day in one of the seafront restaurants, or visit the Reis fish market if you’re self-catering.

Fethiye nightlife

Fethiye has a chilled-out vibe, with plenty of stylish bars located around the marina. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a hearty meal, then sip a cocktail and indulge in some people-watching and good conversation late into the evening.

Top Tip:

If you’re after a livelier night, it’s easy to get a dolmus bus to nearby Hisaronu and party until the small hours.

Shopping in Fethiye

One of the best places to go for shopping is the weekly market held on a Tuesday. There are hundreds of stalls producing a myriad of sights, sounds, colours and smells. Expect to find silver jewellery, souvenirs and fresh produce piled high – it’s worth going just for the incredibly ripe and tasty fruit and veg.

Top Tip:

Bring water and a sun hat – it gets incredibly hot amongst the stalls in summer.

Things to see in Fethiye

If you’re a bit of a history buff, the eerie ghost village of Kayakoy is a must-see. It’s only 40 minutes on the dolmus from Fethiye. Apart from a tiny selection of occupied houses and shops, the village was abandoned nearly 100 years ago when its Greek residents were forced to leave by the government at the time. Experience the sombre yet peaceful atmosphere as you walk amongst the crumbling ruins of ancient houses and churches, with no sound to be heard but the crickets and the call to prayer.

Top Tip:

There’s a small fee to get in, and the footing is quite uneven around the village so make sure you bring good shoes.

We recommend

Mozaik Bahce

Visit this traditional Turkish restaurant for a real feast, with great value meals and large portions. The kebabs come especially well-recommended – think succulent, juicy meat and soft tasty bread. Make sure you book in advance if you want to be sure of a table.

Attika Lounge & Cocktail Bar

Don’t let the cheap and cheerful atmosphere fool you – the cocktails served up here are delicious, especially the daiquiris. The staff are friendly and it’s great for families too, with a kids’ area and free Wi-Fi to keep the younger ones happy.

Market on a Tuesday is a MUST SEE

Fethiye is a lovely town and much bigger than I expected. The harbour is bustling with boat owners trying to persuade you to go on day cruises. The Fish Market has a big circular counter of fish sellers all trying to get you to buy their fish, and they are surrounded by individual restaurants who want you to take the fish you buy to them, where they will cook it for you and supply you with the accompanying salads etc. A great idea! The Rock Tombs high on the hill in Fethiye are worth seeing, and there is a restaurant called The Kings which is right in front of the tombs and does a great 3 course set menu for 14 TL (a bargain!) I have been to many markets in holiday towns but this was by far my favourite. It is huge and well spread out and I never once felt claustrophobic. There seemed to be plenty of room to get around without feeling hemmed in by people. Plenty bargains to be had here! Also, there was not the same hassle we have experienced in other places (Egypt and Tunisia take note!!) This was our first ever holiday in Turkey and we loved it. Would highly recommend the Fethiye area. It is lovely.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The harbour area with its cafes and restaurants, and the market!

WORTH VISITING

FETHIYE IS A LOVELY PLACE TO VISIT AND HOLDS AN EXCELLENT MARKET EVERY TUESDAY. THE MARKET WALKWAYS ARE ALL SHELTERED FROM THE SUN WHICH ADDS TO COMFORT GREATLY. THERE ARE AN ABUNDANCE OF 'GENUINE FAKES' TO BE HAD!! THERE IS A FABULOUS FRESH FISH MARKET TO VISIT WITH RESTAURANTS PLACED AROUND IT. YOU CHOOSE A RESTAURANT, THE WAITER THEN GOES WITH YOU TO THE MARKET, YOU SELECT YOUR FISH AND THEY TAKE IT AWAY AND COOK IT. MY FAVOURITE MEAL OF OUR ENTIRE HOLIDAY. WE WERE LIMITED FOR TIME BUT I BELIEVE THE OLD TOWN OF FETHIYE IS WORTH A VISIT TOO, FROM THE LITTLE WE SAW IT LOOKED A GREAT PLACE. WE SHALL CERTAINLY BE RETURNING.

Fethiye is a convenient central area for touring.

Fethiye is good choice for exploring Southern Turkey. Convenient boat trips on your doorstep. Recommend you book a two day inland tour. Check with loca ltour operators. Dolmus is easy and cheap travel for short trips into hills and local villages. Vast choice of shops and eating places, but not too touristy!

Great weather and a nice place

Stayed 2 weeks in Ovacik just beside Hisaronu. We ve been to this area a number of times over recent years. The weather never disappoints and it is a great spot for families as its not too busy! Plenty of good places to eat too and if you get the chance a visit to Palms restaurant at Seabreaze hotel is well worth a visit! Also a visit to the waterpark is a great day out for the kids!

Interesting location

The area of Fethiye has lots of contrasting places of historic interest from different periods. Would recommend getting a car to see them all. Fethiye itself has rock tombs which act as a backdrop to the town itself. The harbour walk area made a nice walk.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The history of the place - the rock tombds

The seaside is beautiful

The hotel was not in Fethiye and not close to the seaside. A taxi to Fethiye otogar - 30 TKL. You can take an unexpensive minibus to the seaside - 15 min or so. A very nice beach, restuarants, watersports, etc.

Isolation

The resort is too isolated and is a 30 minute bus ride to Fethiye.
