Monastir boasts 9th century walls and an imposing Ribat tower over a modern resort complex, with the result being amazingly harmonious. Monastir captures the perfect blend of traditional and modern that characterizes Tunisia. A marina nestled in the shade of the walls provides an enjoyable promenade as does the long avenue that offers the bluest of Mediterranean seas on one side, and open air terraces of hotels, restaurants and coffee houses from where you can enjoy the view. The resort offers something for everyone; from families looking for a relaxing break bathing in sunshine on beautiful beaches to couples seeking a romantic getaway and even tourists who wish to experience some culture. The Ribat of Harthema down at the sea is probably the main attraction in Monastir, with parts dating back to the 9th Century. It has been used in many famous films including Monty Python’s Life of Brian and the Italian directed Life of Christ. This magnificent building will not fail to disappoint even the most avid of sight seers.

6/10 Good

19 January 2011

busy sea-side town with a number of tourist attractions

CIVIL UNREST DURING OUR (CURTAILED) STAY MEANT WE COULDN'T GO OUT IN THE EVENINGS, SO WERE UNABLE TO EAT OUT. WE WERE HAPPY TO (FOOD)SHOP IN LOCAL SMALL SHOPS, OTHERWISE THERE SEEMED TO BE ONLY ONE CENTRAL SUPERMARKET (CLOSED DUE TO LOOTING DURING OUR STAY). ONE GOOD SANDY BEACH WHICH COULD GET VERY CROWDED IN SUMMER. LOCAL INHABITANTS GENERALLY FRIENDLY WITHOUT BEING TOO INSISTENT (IT'S NATURAL THEY WANT TO MAKE THE MOST OF TOURISTS' MONEY). TRAIN SYSTEM IS RELIABLE, CLEAN AND EFFICIENT.

The best thing about my stay was ...

SUNSHINE, CLOSE TO AIRPORT, LONG COASTLINE.

Doesn't worth the effort

Unluckly we have been there during the Ramadan!!!!!!!! All the bar and restaurants, which were not a lot, were closed until the 9 o' clock in the evening. Despite the widespread idea that Monastir it's a touristic city, we founded great hostility in population.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The fortress (RIBAT)
