A great city

This was our fourth visit and is still one of our favourites. The people are so open and friendly and service is top class. There are plenty of characterful bars and restaurants to enjoy. The canal side buildings are a mixture of apartments and offices, all with great character. Culturally, excellent museums and galleries and the superb Concertgebouw. Lots of shops specialising in one type of goods, e.g. hammocks, drum kits, cheese etc. Schipol must be one of the best airports in the world.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Canal side walks, quirky shops and restaurants, friendly people.

4 Day Stay

4 days in Amsterdam was just right, Did the hop on hop off Canal Bus but quite long waits for the next sailings, Metro day pass was well worth the money. Museum of Medieval torture was good value, Heineken Museum a fun 2 hours, the zoo was nice but dated, a few of the animals were pacing up and down and seemed distressed. Museum of Dutch resistance, interesting but a lot of reading. Wouldn't dare ride a bike in Amsterdam, they were everywhere and seemed to have right of way ahead of everything else, with them and the trams was dizzy with looking every direction to see if anything was coming, but also nice to see. Even though the smoking of Canibis was evident everywhere there was no trouble at all, the whole of the town was very friendly and chilled. Dutch people were very friendly and polite, particularly on the trams

Fantastic City Break

Beautiful City, we had the good fortune of have 4 days of sunshine when we were there so we could enjoy the city. Bring comfortable shoes as lots of walking will be done. Night life very good, Drink is quite dear a pint and a vodka and coke was around 14 euro. Bikes are the main means of transport and would be worth while renting. God train and tram service. Canal Cruise was nice to do, Anne Frank house a little chilling and perhaps a waste of money as you dont really see all that much! Red Light district well worth seeing, if only for a laugh.. We visited the Tulip gardens in Keukenhof these were beautiful, bring your camera, although the tulip fields were not fully in bloom.

Grab a cruise and relax. Lots of shops if you love shopping, plenty of shopping centres around as well. Around every corner some new experiences. You will not believe the bikes that are everywhere. Lots of restraunts to choose from. Have an amazing time.

Fantastic stay in Amsterdam

Spent 4 days exploring the city - having a teenager with us not once did she complain of being bored and we walked for miles. We visited churches, museums including Ann Franks, had a canal tour and even went in Madame Tussards. We called in possibly every cheese shop as well as the fashion shops. We walked past all the coffee shops and managed to dodge the bikes and the trams Food and drink was expensive and although I am sure we could have eaten cheaper for three of us we spent approx £90 per day and we had breakfast provided. Every time we turned a corner we saw something different and even the weather didn't dampen our enthusiasm. Amsterdam is amazing and we will certainly return.

14 January 2011

Quaint and compact

Though very rainy it didn't put us off seeing what Amsterdam had to offer. The city is small and everything is within walking distance, the architecture isn't particularly striking like London, Paris or even somewhere like Lisbon but that is part of the charm. It feels small and intimate. Don't bother with the quite expensive trams unless you have real mobility difficulties. Good choice of restaurants and prices not too bad. The whole central area is very picturesque, people are friendly and it's not overrun with tourists (it was January I suppose). Our 3 day stay was plenty to see pretty much everywhere.
