Chalong: The Pride of Phuket
Chalong is located in the southern part of the island and the resort is popular for water sports and all things nautical. Chalong is considered to be Phuket’s centre for boating and there are many boats moored along the coastline. The resort most distinctive feature is a 700 metre jetty which stretches out into the sea.
The Big Buddha
There’s something a bit cosmopolitan about Chalong and there’s plenty to see and do. The Big Buddha is become one of Phuket’s landmarks and is built mainly out of marble. It’s important to remember when visiting the Buddha that it is a religious site and dressing appropriate is the respectful and appropriate thing to do. Also in Chalong is the Wat Chalong which is one of the most famous sites on the island. The Wat Chalong is a Thai temple surrounded in local legend and myth. Lots of stories tell of healing miracles which happened there during the 1800s when fighting broke out between Chinese secret societies and the locals of the area. The temple really is stunning and is even sometimes referred to as the “Pride of Phuket”.
The Cobra Kiss
Near Chalong is the popular Phuket Snake Show, snakes are one of the most common animals in Thailand so there are a few snake shows about, the one in Chalong is however, typically considered to be the best one as it features the King Cobra Snake Kiss, where the trainers will kiss the King Cobra on the top of the head. The King Cobra is one of the most deadly snakes in the world so this is certainly worth seeing. Don’t forget your camera
Eating Out
Chalong is famous for the great range of seafood available within its restaurants. Tassanee Seafood is a family run restaurant serving up a great selection of locally caught and prepared seafood; they serve some delicious local curry dishes in a friendly and welcoming environment. For some trendy dining try Kan Eang@pier, the restaurant serves up a range of classic Thai and Chinese cuisine served with views of the ocean and modern decor.
