Palma De Mallorca Overview

A city for all

Palma seems to offer visitors and locals everything they could hope to find in a city. From the bustling port and luxury marina to the ancient streets and café society, the city has it all. Palma sits proudly in the Bay of Palma with the glistening Mediterranean providing an amazing backdrop to the impressive local architecture.

Vibrant café society

This modern sophisticated city is the perfect destination throughout the year. In the summer months, use the city as a base to explore the beautiful coastline and mountainous interior. Your evenings can be spent exploring the warren of streets surrounding the cathedral. There is a vibrant café society and a very long list of places to eat and drink. Outside the summer, consider a city break and soak up the local culture. The city boasts fine museums, art galleries and music venues alongside beautiful historic buildings.

Get out and explore

Head east, west or north and explore the island of Majorca during your stay in Palma. To the east and west you will find a mix of purpose built resorts and lovely little coves and fishing villages. Hire a car and follow the road out of town. North are the mountains and the large family resorts of the north east including Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia.

Things to do in Palma De Mallorca

On the beach in Palma

There is a local urban beach within easy reach of the city but you may find this is not quite what you want. It can be noisy with the main road running directly behind the beach. It is probably better to either head west to the lovely little resort of Cala Mayor or east to the slightly more convenient Portixol beach. This tranquil little cove is lined with picturesque buildings and a convenient tapas restaurant.

Top Tip:

Portixol is a 20 minute walk along the sea front from Palma. It’s a great way to enjoy the impressive coastline.

Eat and drink in Palma

Palma is full of great places to eat from simple cafes to high end restaurants. If you have time on your side, a simple stroll through the atmospheric streets of the old town stopping for tapas as you go is a wonderful way to eat and explore. The area around La Llonja is a good place to start. It is near the sea front and is popular with both visitors and locals day and night.

Top Tip:

Look out for TaPalma, a tapas festival in October. You can make the most of five days of discounted tapas and drinks on an organised circuit of restaurants and bars.

Palma nightlife

As you might expect from such a vibrant city, Palma really gets going after dark. Depending on your tastes there are several areas worth trying. For an upmarket, sophisticated night out, you should try the area around Can Barbara marina. There are some nice cocktail bars and the super club Pacha is next door. Head into the La Llonja area and join the locals as they make the most of the pedestrianised streets to stroll between lively bars and more intimated back street tapas joints. For a real taste of independent Palma it is worth trying the area east of Plaza Major. You will find a younger, local crowd enjoying the eclectic mix of small bars and clubs.

Top Tip:

Try the Ruta Martiana. This is basically a tapas run held every Tuesday and Wednesday in a district beyond Plaza Major called Gerreria. It’s a little off the tourist track but worth the effort.

Shopping in Palma

The city is full of incredible little independent stores selling antiques, jewellery and locally produced art. You will also find amazing weekend flea markets in the old town – a perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday morning. If you want to pick up some flowers and a newspaper take a walk down either La Rambla or Passeig des Born. Both streets are actually built on reclaimed river beds and both are now beautifully tree lined boulevards. If you need a department store and some retail therapy you should try El Corte Ingles, north of Plaza Major.

Top Tip:

If you want to explore the city far and wide consider hiring a bike to get around. For the brave, Segways are available.

Things to see in Palma

It might be worth starting your visit to Palma with a guided tour to familiarise yourself with the maze of streets, alleyways and small squares. Once you are comfortable take a walk down to the sea front and marvel at La Seu, the impressive and imposing cathedral. You can also treat yourself to a different view of the city and surrounding coast by taking a half day cruise from the marina. A visit to the Bellver Castle is also worthwhile. Not only will you be rewarded with a show stopping view of Palma but will also have the chance to explore a perfectly intact castle that now houses the City History Museum.

Top Tip:

Visit the tourism office and find out if there are any live events on at the Parc de la Mer during your visit. This incredible open air venue has a prime location on the sea front and is a real treat on a warm evening.

We Recommend

Molta Barra – Gerreria

This bar is located beyond Plaza Mayor in the heart of Ruta Martiana territory. It is a big lively bar full of locals and more adventurous visitors. Energetic bar staff serve up cold beers and wine along with tapas and pinchos.

Pacha

This iconic club enjoys a prominent position near the cathedral. The indoor/outdoor set up is perfect for a late nights in the middle of the summer. Don’t expect the club to get going until well after midnight.

Oktoberfest

Take a break from local culture and dive into a night of Bavarian entertainment at the annual beer festival. You will feel like you have arrived in Munich as you step into the festival big top. You will find traditional food, beer and music as well as entertainment for all the family.

Beautiful Palma

Janet Horwell, Sheffield

Palma is a wonderful city for a short break in the sun. There is something for everyone. The cathedral is beautiful. The shops are numerous and there are plenty of bars and restaurants around the city. Should you be unlucky and have rainy days, there are attractions to visit, such as the aquarium and marineland or take the bus tour and sit downstairs under cover!

The best thing about my stay was ...

A beautiful city just a couple of hours away from the UK. Perfect for a short break

To a sunny place

Helen , Cambridge

Loads of shops , cafe bars and restaurants, dont underestimate the paseos , explore the place as it does offer a lot, in one of the local shops , we even had a 1.5 ltr of water for €0.70. Definitely have a cuppa at Fibonacci, love their blueberry cheesecake, if you are a fish lover go to Moby-Dyk, love their platter of seafood and must try paella ( all sorts) and go for a jug of sangria, i believe they cook their food with love and so much passion, must say abso-licious, if there is such a word ... For pasta lovers , go to trettoria pizerria, i love food so i am adventurous , i must say i have not eaten anything that does not satisfy my pallate!

Cultural, modern, welcoming

Jennifer Lunn, Woking

We loved Palma for its diversity and buzz. The cathedral is of course magnificent with its superb stained glass windows and the feeling of peace amidst a buzzing city. The shops are excellent. There are many bars and restaurants and we particularly enjoyed Cappucinos where we had lunch several times. The toilets were clean and the staff friendly. In fact we found in general that the people in Palma were very hospitable and helpful.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Palma - the best city in the world

Janice Chadwick, Lytham St.Annes, Lancashire

So much to do, so much to see. The shops are great with a wide selection to suit all ages, styles and budget. The restaurants in the Old Town can be (as you would expect) very touristy but head for the Santa Catalina area (just west of the main town) and you will be spoilt for choice. The transport service, both local and national, is reliable and makes the rest of the island extremely accessible. Recommend the bus from the bus/train station to Pollensa/Pt Pollensa, Santa Ponsa, Andraitx, train the Soller/Pt Soller, local bus to Illetas but the options are endless. Mallorca is a beautiful island. Then, of course back in Palma, there is the sight-seeing - cathedral, museums etc etc or just strolling through the myriad streets, stumbling across another little bar in another little square or happening upon the oldest coffee shop in Palma. Palma doesn't have a beach, as such, but it is but a short stroll along in front of the cathedral towards Portixol where you can find several clean, large, safe beaches that remain unspoilt by rows of sunbeds. Palma truly is beautiful.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Proximity to the airport, atmosphere, charm
