Nerja Overview

Nerja, once a sleepy fishing town in the Andalusian region. It is one of the few places that has kept its traditional charm, with its narrow winding streets and whitewashed houses. Fast forward and today it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region and is known as the ‘jewel on the Costa del Sol’.

Andalucian Jewel

Much of Nerja’s fishing village charm has remained in the old town which is full of traditional Andalucian charisma, explore the narrow streets, browse the many shops or sit outside one of the many café-bars with a drink and tapas. The Balcon de Europa is the centrepiece of the history in Nerja, once a fortress, now it’s a viewing platform with panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and of Nerja’s sandy beaches. Nerja Caves is a hidden gem steeped with history and magnificent stalactites and stalagmites where the beauty can only be appreciated from the inside. Sierra Almijara National Park is waiting to be explored, around 2 hours away from the town. There are many opportunities to enjoy spectacular hikes and the breathtaking landscape, you may even spot hidden wildlife within the park.

Blue Flag Beaches

Nerja is home to some of the best beaches on the Costa del Sol, with the resort having over 16km of sandy coastline. Some are more popular than others, with Playa Burriana being a firm favourite, there are numerous bars, restaurants and shops. Major water sports including water skiing, scuba diving and kayaking are just a handful of activities offered at the beaches.

Day trips to Almunecar

Almunecar is one of the most visited tourist spots in the Grenada province. It can be reached in around 30-40 minutes by public transport from Nerja. The narrow, winding streets are home to great bars and restaurants, along with popular attractions including San Miguel castle which dominates the Almunecar skyline and the El Majuelo Botanical Gardens.

Things to do in Nerja

On the Beach in Nerja

Burriana Beach is one of Nerja’s most loved beaches. It’s the most popular on this Blue Flag stretch, with Chiringuitos, pedalos and a large promenade leading to the beach lined with restaurants, bars and shops. Another must visit beach is Playa Torrecilla, perfect for families with young children, due to its shallow waters and soft sand. Maro Beach is a secluded cove, considered to be one of the best beaches in Andalucia, with unbeatable scenery and crystal clear waters.

Top Tip:

Carabeillo Beach is almost like sitting on a private island, surrounded by tropical palm trees and shrubs. There are no bars but the peace and tranquillity is well worth it.

Eat and drink in Nerja

Enjoy a taste of traditional Spain, visit a few Tapas bars and mix with the locals. For the most authentic food and for a real Spanish experience, explore the back streets of Nerja, here you’ll find some hidden gems. Choose to go Al fresco and head to the streets behind the Balcon de Europa, where you’ll find a variety of eating options with anything from traditional Andalusian dishes to pizza joints.

Top Tip:

Go on a ‘Tapas Trail’, it is a great way to sample a variety of tapas and to generally have fun. Link a few bars together in a logical manner and mingle with the locals.

Nerja Nightlife

During the summer months, Tutti Frutti Square is where most of the night time activity is. Wall to wall with bars the square is filled with dressed-to-the-nines partygoers and a vibrant atmosphere. Many of the bars don’t come to life until around midnight but keep going until the early hours.

Top Tip:

For those looking for a quieter night, the Calle Del Almirante has tons of bars, most are owned by UK ex-pats and are a great place to catch a football match with a pint.

Shopping in Nerja

There are a wide range of traditional shops and independent boutiques, selling everything from local handmade crafts to the latest designer labels, head to the old part of town particularly Calle Pintada and Calle Cristo. On Tuesday and Sunday head to the weekly markets where you can try your hand at haggling and see what bargains you can pick up.

Top Tip:

If you walk into a shop in Spain, particularly the smaller shops, it is common practice to say “hola” (hello). Don’t forget the concept of queuing in a straight line does not exist in Spain!

Things to see in Nerja

Nerja caves are one of the most popular and spectacular historical sites in the Andalusian region. There are hundreds of steps leading to this giant series of grottoes. Just be sure to wear sturdy shoes. During the summer months, there are often concerts in one of the chambers.

The Balcon de Europa is Nerja’s most famous landmark and the focal point for many of the town’s activities. A former fortress, the platform now has spectacular views of the Mediterranean coastline, with its backdrop of mountains. In the evening, the Balcon de Europa comes to life with street performers of all kind, making it the ideal place to wander and soak up the atmosphere.

Top Tip:

When visiting the Nerja caves layer your clothing. When descending it can be on the chilly and damp side, depending on the weather outside. Also the walk up and down the steps may make you a little warm.

We Recommend

Maria Bonita

Maria Bonita is set near the beach and has unbeatable sea views. It is a unique restaurant serving the very best flavours of the region, specialising in design salads, as well as seafood paella.

Restaurant 34 is positioned right in the heart of Nerja’s fishing neighbourhood. Its unbeatable location has picturesque views of Carabeo Beach. Specialities include local Mediterranean dishes.

Right in the heart of Nerja’s fishing neighbour is Restaurant 34, its set in an unbeatable location with views of Carabeo Beach. Specialities include local Mediterranean dishes.

El Molino

For a real Spanish experience, El Molino is the place. It’s one of the oldest and most typically Spanish bars in Nerja. Take in a flamenco show with spontaneous performances from guitar players and singers who once settled down in Nerja.

Rincon Del Sol is the ideal place to chill out by the beach. After a busy day on the beach where better to relax than a beach bar or a chill out terrace. Ease yourself onto a barstool or collapse into a sofa and watch the sunset over the horizon with a cocktail in your hand.

San Juan Festival

The festival of San Juan marks the beginning of summer. The tradition is to camp on beaches overnight with family and friends. Just after midnight the custom is to wash your face in the sea or burn an effigy on a bonfire, both are said to cleanse people of their sins.

A Nerja festival is not complete without wine and music, so don’t expect much sleep if you are staying all night, but do expect to enjoy a great party.

Lovely quaint Spanish town which comes alive in the evenings. Summer is heaving and lots of resturants and bars are open, winter, not so many but still a good choice. Beaches are lovely and safe, they used to have lovely pebble beach, but this has changed and now more like grit which is quite dirty, but sea is so clear and clean.

Beautiful traditional spanish resort

, Leeds

If you want a taste of rustic Spain this is for you. Don't expect Macdonalds or lots of British bars. One tip we did receive from a couple who live in Nerja is if you order a drink at a bar which offers tapas - you get one free with each drink. Not all bars advertise this but the locals know this fact. The village of Frigillian is worth a visit - try the wine 1euro a glass.

Nerja is a beautiful spanish town, with lots of great restaurants and tapas bar. would not recommend it for young tenagers who want to party.

10/10 Amazing

Gorgeous! A little jewel

, Preston, Lancashire

Nerja has something for everybody, there are miles of beaches divided up into several little coves (though the sand is quite rough, and the sea shelves quite steeply with pebbles underfoot, so jelly shoes would be a definite plus!) It's a beautiful, picturesque spot, the sea views are amazing. The "hub" of the town is the Balcon de Europa, a central plaza with portrait painters and sometimes concerts and markets, etc., and this is the best place to admire the view or just sit and people-watch. There are scores of restaurants, bars and shops within easy walking distance of the Balcon catering for all tastes, and the town has a friendly and relaxed feeling about it - helped by the fact that most of the central area is pedestrianised, and not having to dodge motor vehicles is a definite plus, though the bus station is only a short walk away and the buses go to most places of interest for something like one euro per trip - we recommend the caves of Nerja, about 4km out of town, spectacular!

The best thing about my stay was ...

The variety of things to see and do, the view, the mix of nationalities

10/10 Amazing

A lovely place for a relaxing holiday.

, Manchester

Nerja is rightly named 'the jewel of the Costa del Sol'. It's a place where many Spanish people choose to holiday, which I think is a recommendation in itself. It's relatively unspoilt, and has many beaches. There's lots of choice when it comes to eating and drinking. I've been to Nerja 15 times now; the first time I went I fell in love with the place.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The fact that it's hardly changed in the time I've visited it.

Perfect, A very special place!

, Washington West sussex

For us Nerje is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday. Wall to wall sunshine, very good tempretures, very clean beaches and town. Not to far from bigger attractions, excellent Bus service. Lots of Bars and restaurants. The Balcon is the place to be of an evening, where you will find entertainment and many locals with their families and many talented artists. The local people are very friendly and all who come here seem to be too !

The best thing about my stay was ...

Its situation, the sun the sea and the Sangria!!

, St Albans

Been going for over 20yrs. Spain and the spanish are still in this town. Don't expect 'egg and chips' everywhere because you wont find it ! Tapas and cervecia however you will !! Just love my second home !!

The best thing about my stay was ...

The spanish still outway the tourists

10/10 Amazing
