Malaga Overview

For many visitors arriving in Malaga it is simply a hub connecting them with the golden beach resorts on the Costa del Sol. The city of Malaga is much more than this. It is rich in ancient history and modern culture with an impressive port and beautiful coastline. The old town boasts a wide range of historically significant sites and landmarks while the modern city is home to a growing range of culinary hotspots and modern boutique hotels and bars.

A cultural revolution

Malaga really started to impose itself as a destination in its own right once the Picasso Museum was finished in 2003. The surge in visitors to the city has led to a cultural revolution as well as a sustained period of development and cleaning up. There are over 30 museums in the city as well a flourishing cultural scene typified by the newly christened SOHO district. The wide, leafy avenues of the town are packed with interesting stores and tapas joints. The glistening port is home to some significant retail and hospitality development. Rooftop pools sit proudly over boutique hotels and diners enjoy the best in local produce served with a fine dining twist.

Historical centre

The historical centre of this modern city does not hide away. The imposing Alcazaba stands watch over the port while the Gibralfaro Castle looks down on the town from the surrounding hills. The ancient cathedral known as ‘La Manquita’ is a short distance from the Paseo de los Curas and the ferry port but feels a world away. The streets narrow and the cobbles replace the tarmac. Nearby Plaza del Obispo is a great place to pull up a chair and enjoy a coffee with the cathedral looming over you. The beaches of this stretch of coastline are perfect for days away from the city with the two most popular being El Palo and La Malagueta. Take the chance to enjoy beach life Malaga style with the local chirnguitos serving up simple sea food and chilled white wine to local weekenders and knowledgeable visitors.

Things to do in Malaga

On the beach in Malaga

Although there are bigger and brasher beaches and resorts west of the city, Malaga has a vibrant beach scene of its own. The nearest beaches to the city are either side of the modern port and harbour. To the west lies the small beach known locally as El Palo. This gently curving city beach looks out across the ferries coming and going throughout the day. There is a wide promenade linking the various beach bars and restaurants along the coast, perfect for a walk or bike ride day and night. East of the port is the man-made beach of La Malagueta, home to quite a bit of the more recent development. There are several outstanding chiringuitos along the beach as well as a perfectly level, safe beach to enjoy.

Eat and drink in Malaga

Malaga has re-discovered local pride and the food on offer wherever you go reflects this. The area is blessed with incredible natural resources and is a major supplier across Europe. From milk to sea food via olive oil and wine production, Malaga is rich in incredible raw natural ingredients. The local restaurants from back street tapas bars in the old town to the modern restaurants in the re-developed port make the most of these ingredients to serve up both traditional and quirky dishes. The bars around the old town serve up lovely chilled white wine and rose as well as the excellent local sherry.

Top Tip:

The beachside chiringuitos are great. Visit one near La Malagueta and sample the very best in simple sea food, cooked well with a nice glass of cold white wine.

Malaga nightlife

This big, vibrant city comes alive in the evening. The warm evenings are perfect for long nights walking through the streets of Malaga enjoying drinks and small bites of food as you go. The bar hotspot is the whole area from the Plaza de la Marina on the sea front up Calle Larios and beyond. At the heart of this area is Plaza de la Constitucion, a beautiful square with cobbled, pedestrianised streets running off in every direction. You will find a good mix of smarter lounge type bars and more traditional tapas bars. The clubbing scene focuses around the Plaza de la Merced, standing in the shadows of the Gibralfaro Castle. The local scene starts late and finishes the following morning.

Shopping in Malaga

The city is home to an eclectic mix of shops with local family run stores brushing shoulders with high end fashion boutiques. Calle Larios is a wide and spectacular street lined with every imaginable store. It’s a traffic free zone and window shopping is a great way to explore the interesting streets and produce of the area. The Atarazanas Market east of the cathedral is must see during your visit. The city’s central market is open daily and offers the very best local produce including fish, meat and local fruit and vegetables. It is great to walk through the indoor market taking in the sights, sounds and smells. For shopping under one roof head to the local El Corte Ingles, Spain’s number one department store.

Top Tip:

Look out for the local fortified sweet wine – it is similar to Port and makes a great gift.

Things to do in Malaga

Explore the history of this beautiful city. The cathedral, the Roman Theatre, the Castle and the Alcazaba fortress are all within easy walking distance. The Roman and Moorish influence is everywhere you turn in the old town – get lost in the small cobbled streets and plazas.  For a hit of culture, the Picasso Museum is a must. It continues to draw visitors from far and wide. You will find it in a beautifully restored 16th Century palace a short distance from the Roman Theatre and the Alcazaba fortress. Outside the city, the mountainous interior is perfect for day trips and walking expeditions and the coast west of Malaga is lined with exciting beach resorts.

We Recommend

Lamoraga

This small chain of modern tapas bars is headed up by an award winning Spanish chef. Lamoraga delivers slightly more refined tapas to a willing audience across the city. You will find it on Calle Fresco – a small street running off Calle Larios.

Rooftop bar at AC Malaga Palacio

Join the jet set and sip a cocktail on this stunning rooftop. The bar over-looks the port, Alcazaba and the Alameda Gardens.

Malaga Carnival – February/March

This annual carnival is held in the run up to Lent. Everybody is dressed up as they enjoy the parades, parties and performances that take place throughout the city. The carnival culminates in the ceremonial burying of the sardine which takes place on La Malagueta beach.

Malaga

This was my first visit to Malaga as I always had it penned in my head as Club 18-30. How wrong was I - loved every minute of it!!! Try it you won't regret it!!!

The best thing about my stay was ...

Friendly Atmosphere

A wonderful place to learn Spanish

, Bridgend. UK

Malaga is the perfect place to practice your Spanish. It's a beautiful city with very friendly people. The best time of year to visit - so long as you are comfortable with very hot weather (up to 38C during our recent visit) - is during the August Feria when the city streets are filled with flamenco, guitars and horses. You can enjoy fireworks and a huge pop concert on opening night (with not a drunken yob in sight) followed by a whole week of festivities. You will be made to feel very welcome. But dont expect people to speak English to you. One of the very best things about Malaga is that it has not been invaded by the English, unlike many of the towns along the Costa del Sol. You dont need to be fluent - everyone will try very hard to help you to be understood - a glass of Malaga wine and a phrasebook work perfectly well.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Beautiful architecture, beautiful horses, wonderful traditions, friendly people.

Perfect- such a gorgeous city

, Belfast

Totally loved this city- just returned from 10 days there and wished we could've stayed longer- forever would have done! So much to do- the beach is handy, the shopping is great, the choice of food and bars unreal (try Cafe Bolsa or Austin Martini's), plenty to see- castle museums etc. Also, loved the tropical park right in the centre- gorgeous for picnic lunch, or sitting relaxing watching the world go by.Train station (only 5 euros from our hotel, MS Maestranza) made it easy to access other resorts. These were all good to see but we preferred Malaga to any of them. All the people we met, in bars and restaurants were friendly, chatty, helpful, pleasant and a delight to meet. really glad we came here- we intended to visit last year but some photos on the net made the city look like a dull concrete jungle, so we opted for Palma again. Decided this year to give Malaga a go & now gutted to leave it behind, Can't wait to go back.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The park, the shops, the restaurants/bars, the people.

Despite having my purse stolen I still love Malaga. My husband pursued the thief and locals joined in. The thief was caught and the purse recovered. There aren't many cities where that would happen! Usually people look the other way.

Malaga is certainly not Torremolinos

, Carluke, Scotland

Dont want to talk down Torremolinos here but Malaga is "cut from a different cloth". We caught the bus from Malaga central bus station and went to Torremolinos for the day as we have never seen it. Only half an hour bus journey but worlds apart. Let me talk about Malaga though as it is a beautiful city. Malaga is a great city to visit for a "city break" holiday and has the added bonus of having good beaches to soak up the sun. Fabulous cafes and restaurants are every where in the main centre. If you are into people watching then this is a place to visit. We were sitting at a cafe in the centre and a couple walking there dog came by. Nothing unusual about that except the dog had Bob Marley hair extensions, nearly fell off my chair, brilliant stuff. Very trendy, up market city with gorgeous buildings and lots of places of interest. The city also hosts the large cruise ships at the docks and as we came off one for a five day city break, Malaga it was a welcoming site. The city itself is very "Spanish" and although the staff in most of the restaurants, etc. can speak a little English, the vast majority of places dont look to cater for the hoards of English tourists looking for a lager weekend so if your after this, its not the place for you. If you want nice restaurants offering good food and wine then this is a Spanish city that has is in abundance. Too may good points to cover in this review, however, all i'll say is, go there and experience it yourself.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Nice restaurants offering great food and very good city hotels.

Malaga is a great city - a proper working Spanish city that hasn't lost charm to accommodate tourists. Great restaurants, stunning architecture etc I'd recommend hiring a bike or taking a bike tour to explore beyong the immediate centre.

We love Malaga and come here every opportunity we get when staying within easy travelling distance. There are so many places to see;the cathedral, the castle, Alcazabar, the museums, the old town and the fantastic range of tapas bars, restaurants and beach areas and all at very reasonable prices. The local transport network is terrific for getting to anywhere along the coast.

Never realised nor appreciated how much there was to see and do in Malaga. We found some great Tapas bars. Would recommend the horse and carriage tour 30 euros for 4 people was excellent value. Just a lovely place to walk round with lots of historical sites if you are into that sort of stuff.

A fantastic place to visit as a couple or as a family

, Manchester, England

We loved Malaga. It is a fantastic place to visit for a weekend break or even longer. We got a taxi from the airport as we had a night flight but got the airport express bus back to the airport which costs just 3 euros, a bargain. The city has an abundance of historical features and wandering round the 10th century Alcazaba fortess is a must. The narrow, winding streets are filled with tapas bars, wonderful restaurants and lovely boutiques. There is something for everyone, and the centre of the city is car free so child and adult friendly.
