Lagos, The Algarve Holiday & Hotels

Hotels in Lagos

Lagos is a historic and characterful city that is situated on the beautiful Western Algarve. It is a city that boasts a rich heritage and a coastline of dramatic natural scenery, and is one of the Algarve’s finest holiday destinations. Accommodation in Lagos ranges from luxurious, 5-star hotels to light and airy affordable apartments. So, whether you’re travelling as a group or an individual Lagos has everything you need for the perfect break.

Aside from providing picturesque beaches, buzzing nightlife and outstanding tourist facilities, since Lagos is found within the historic centre of the proud Portuguese city, you can stumble upon the cobbled streets and discover authentic restaurants. Here, you can experience a welcoming atmosphere as if you were a local, combining traditional Portuguese culture with stunning scenery; the perfect backdrop for your relaxing get-away.

Where to stay

The Old Town

The striking architecture surrounding the city, outdoor cafes and restaurants is why so many are drawn to the beautiful Lagos. For travellers looking to experience the historical side of the city, the Old Town is the perfect place to stay. While here, be sure to check out the authentic Antigo Mercado de Escravos, which has been transformed into a fascinating gallery to display the work of local, talented artists.

Marina de Lagos

Whether you are interested in boating, water skiing, fishing - or just want to relax and watch the sunset - staying near the Marina de Lagos is a wise choice. Less than 500m away from Meia Praia beach and boasting a range of small restaurants and cafes, the marina is the place to stay if you are looking for a peaceful ambience.

The Beach Meia Praia

For a charming, picturesque feel, accommodation close to the largest beach in the Lagos is an excellent decision. Here, you can take in the views of the golden sand stretching all the way from the western side of Lagos, to Odiáxere River mouth on the eastern side. Aside from being the perfect backdrop to your holiday snaps, it’s also ideal for relaxation, as it is a much quieter part of the city with plenty of space to soak up the sun.

What to see

Lagos has plenty of attractions and activities for every age group. Part of Lagos’ charm is that it is enriched in history which is reflected in all you can discover there. A 17th- century fort, ancient Moorish walls and extravagant Baroque churches are just a short list of things to see. To experience more of the beauty that Lagos offers, you can take a trip to the south to see the Ponta da Piedade headland, where you can gaze at high cliffs lined with secret grottos, arches and caves.

For a relaxing day why not head over to the east of Lagos to admire its 4km long scenic beach, Meia Praia? Or venture down the steep wooden steps to the sandy cove of Praia do Camilo, one of the largest sandy beaches of western Algarve, along with Praia da Dona Ana.

To get nearer to Panta da Piedade caves, you can hop in a kayak and explore the breath-taking views at your leisure. Or, for those who would rather see the scenery from higher up, there are boat trips you can take where you can spot dolphins, as well as the secret coves. Fancy riding some waves? You can even learn how to surf with Raven surf schools.

In addition to the stunning scenery, there are various attractions for holidaymakers such as Zoo de Lagos, where you can get up close to animals from five continents. The zoo even has an enclosure where you can interact with playful lemurs, for an extra fee. Alternatively, any foodies will be glad to know that you can take part in a classic food tour, where you can be immersed in the city atmosphere as you explore by foot. On this attraction, you will taste authentic Algarve cuisine at small, local taverns and restaurants.

Nightlife

Lagos nightlife is full of interesting varieties based around the city’s authentic charm. Whatever you are looking for, these are some of the things you can expect to see on a typical night; dancing on the bar, along with drinking challenges and pint-sized cocktails at Joes Garage, locals dancing until at Lago’s Grand Café - open until 5 am. For those looking for a more relaxed evening, you may prefer to sip a Mojito on the terrace of Bon Vivant.

What to eat

Lagos hosts a range of delicious restaurants and tapas bars which serve fresh fish and seafood, straight from the Mediterranean Sea. If you’re looking to indulge in local and authentic Portuguese cuisines, you can indulge in local dishes such as the Cataplana, a traditional seafood rice dish that is both cooked and served in a large copper dish that resembles the key ingredient, clams. Designed to be shared, it is the perfect dish for the whole family to enjoy.

Shopping

The best thing about shopping in the Algarve is the opening hours. So, whether you are looking for new bathers before hitting the beach, an easy shop break after lunch or dinner, the Portuguese shopping centres like MAR Shopping Algarve, Forum Algarve and Aqua Portimão are at your disposal.

If you are seeking authentic shopping in Lagos, start with the food markets. The most visited is the Mercado Municipal da Avenida de Lagos - open every Saturday and Sunday from 7 am until 2 pm. Among the many stalls are food stands (with fresh fruit aplenty), you’ll be sure to find every fish of every kind.

Why not check out more of our Portgual holidays? We have some of the best holiday deals available, whether you’re interested in the busy capital of Lisbon or another part of the charming Algarve.

Quaint town that is yet to feel too touristy

I was initially quite worried about heading to Lagos on my own, but on getting there I found the people to be pleasant. There is a few hostels in the old town with had numerous english speaking europeans and americans. All the bar staff were easy to talk to and made for a relaxing night out. Plenty of bars/restaurants about serving food/beer at resonable price (€3 pint beer €2.50 bottle lager, €7 large salad, €9 filling meal) The streets around Lagos are very narrow and people laid back. It reminded me of some of the Cornish towns I travel to. I went to Lagos for the surfing and although the wind picked up throughout my stay, I wasn't disappointed, purchasing a 3 day surf lessons/safari. Adverts for boat trips / dolphin spotting / mountain biking and others were seen around the place making sure you'd unlikely get bored on a week or longer holiday.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Relaxed atmosphere, Short transfer to good surf beaches

Bus terminus giving you access to other nearby resorts. Lovely marina also.

Lagos

This really is a great town to the west of the Algarve. The Old Town is like a maze of tiny streets each with its own delights of either shops, bars or restaurants. There is also an extremely picturesque marina which not only compliments the town but is also an extremely enjoyable place to visit in itself. Do some homework before you go and seek out some of the incredible restaurants. We were in heaven in each of the two we located. This is my favourite resort on the Algarve and I will look no further than here for my base in the future.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Casinha do Petisco restaurant on Rua da Oliveira. Traditional Portugeuse food and what an experience. Be prepared to queue up outside as they don't take bookings and it is small but you will be rewarded for doing so.

A home away from home

This is our eighth year at Lagos, sad as it may appear to some, we love the place. It has some great beaches, loads of restaurants, of which our favourite is the Chicken Piri Piri, just at the back of the main square, they have an excellent Tourist menu starting at 14 Euros, but you will come away stuffed - ask for Pedro. All the pavements in the town are set with small blocks of shiny stones, so watch what shoes you wear, especially if there has just been a shower. There is a great marina, where you can watch the world go by day or night, the English all seem to congregate either at the Oasis or Happy Jacks, both good drinking and eating places, where you will get a friendly welcome.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Friendly, welcoming, clean and not built up.

Not overly commercialised and very friendly.

True Portugal or close to it. Not Blackpool abroad, restaurants serving good traditional food and drinks at reasonable prices. English spoken by everyone we spoke to but try Portugese as they will appreciate the effort. Well worth the escape from the more frequented resorts.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Food, drinks, prices and the locals.

Beautiful spot. This is our second time back and won't be our last. Has all the advantages of some of the bigger spots such as Vilamoura and Albufeira but is much more friendly and certainly not as expensive

Fantastic Destination !!!

I love Lagos ! ...the old town itself is charming & not too developed with many great restaurants & bars which are not too expensive. If you have a car, explore the amazing unspoilt western algarve region with it's stunning blue flag beaches popular with surfers & also visit the many small traditional Portuguese whitewashed villages which have their own individual character. I can't wait to return ...hopefully soon !

The best thing about my stay was ...

Stunning scenery, fantastic food, relaxed atmosphere.
