The whole ambience of Maderia was beautiful, the people were so friendly! Do go into the Old Town of Funchal to eat, the side streets are an experience in its self to choose a restaurant!! A must is the Cable car and the toboggan is truly hair-raising but unforgettable (no worries the guys have total control) Most of all this Island is a Gardeners Paradise with the most beautiful Gardens to visit, the people who work on them should be so proud of themselves. Do go and have afternoon tea at Reid's Hotel another wonderful experience!

Beautiful place to visit!

Just a few points to help you:- Transport from the airport - a taxi will cost approx 30 Euros whereas the Aerobus which is avaible right outside the airport only costs 7.50 Euros return pp. Restaurants - in the old town (cobbled streets) are located in two streets and they are all much the same. We had a fantastic meal in Xarambinha (pasta) but all other dishes looked good. Staff really friendly and really generous portions (throughout all the restaurants). Restaurant Le Jardin, Estrala Do Mar and Sao Jose are other restaurants that we ate in and enjoyed the food. Majority do have set menus which are all excellent value for money (approx 15 Euros pp). Cable Car - 24 Euros return which includes entrance to the Monte Gardens, which is well worth a visit. Its beautiful and very peaceful but allow a few hours to really enjoy them. A single is 15 Euros and entrance to the gardens is 10 Euros, so buying the join ticket doesn't save much. Tobaggons - this is definitely worth a go. 30 Euros for 2 people and its quite a long ride but when you get to the bottom you have two choices. If you've bought a return cable car ticket and need to get back to the top there are taxis but they're expensive. We paid 10 Euros although that came down from 15 Euros. Or you can walk back into Funchal, which is quite a way and steep but as we didn't do it, i can't comment any further. Sightseeing buses - There are 2, the red bus and the yellow/blus bus. We chose the yellow/blue bus as its ran by a Portuguese company rather than the red bus which you can find in most cities. However, they both do the same routes and both cost 12 Euros pp which is excellent value as they are both valid for 2 days!. The coastal walk from the Lido back to the old town is also a lovely walk. Madeira is a beautiful place and definitely worth a visit - weather is fantastic, its very green and the people are very friendly. You need to be mobile though as lots of hills!

Funchal is a well balanced resort, with a mixture of luxury and good basic Madeira aspects

Funchal is a busy town with plenty of facilities, beaches, harbour, old town, restaurants etc. But in early March, there is a lot of cloud and its often better to get to the other side of the island where sun is shining. This means a hire car is a strong favourite, although roads are narrow, twisty and can be challenging. The island has some stunning scenery and fabulous walking

Fabulous place to visit. Compact, but massively diverse place to explore. Lots to do and see, para gliding, diving, fishing, riding, walking, casino, café's, restaurants, and much more. Feels very safe, good police presence, english widely spoken, prices good considering pretty much everything has to be imported. Wide range of good hotels to suit your pocket. Tourism major, if not main source of income, so locals generally really helpful. Sales touts for tours and restaurants are plentiful, generally helpful, honest, and not too pushy (just don't forget it is their job to sell). Weather good, lot of wind and rain, as you would expect from an island stuck 400 miles out in the atlantic, but this means things are green and clean. Watch out for the sun, cloud cover, doesn't mean sun cover. Definitely a place to revisit, but probably not between July and September (too hot), though they don't seem to have a particular high or low season...some just like it hot. Downside, longish flight compared to Spanish Costas, but worth it.

Nice place to wander around - plent of places to eat

Whether you just like ambling around the town and the various gardens or more strenuous walks in the hills - everything is lush and green with a most agreeable climate! The regular fruit, flower and veg market is a riot of colour. Only downside is the traffic which can be quite bad close to the town.
