Love the place

My husband and I have been visiting Armacao de Pera for about 15 years its such a lovely place. I like it because of the fact its a fishing village with normal Portuguese people going about their business. There are a number of very good restaurants and several bars. My favourite restaurants are Porters, Clipper, Tasker, Lorenzos, Chinese restaurant in old town, Raj Indian at the Holiday Inn. Favourite bars Kippis and Reis. There are quite a number of shops selling things from tourist tatt (as my hubby calls it) to upmarket jewellery. The most beautiful thing about the resort is the beach... golden sand and the sound of the Atlantic Ocean can't beat it. The resort is within easy distance of visiting Albufeira, Portimao, Algarve Shopping and many other places buses are often and taxis are resonably priced. Armacao has had a lot of money spent on it to make it pedestrianised and user friendly. There are 2 separate areas to the resort the new and old town I favour the old town there are more authentic Portuguese type buildings, there are high rise appartment blocks in the new town. In the old town you can see the fishermen going out to sea and also mending their nets on the beach, the beach is very clean and has cafes, beach beds and pedalows etc.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The beach and the restaurants and the people who are so friendly and remember you if you return.

A true Portugese resort

If you like fish this is the resort for you.You are spoilt for choice, a budget for everyone There are not many Brits here-what a plus! The Portugese are very friendly and helpful. This is still a family resort, kids on the beach until 8 or 9 o clock-the water is crystal clear and the sand clean.

not too commercialised

Having been a visitor to Armacao for the past 18 years I suppose we like it a lot. There have been a lot of changes but it still maintains an old world charm at the fisherman's end of the beach. Plenty of good, reasonably priced restaurants all within walking distance of the sea front.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Pedro's beach bar :)

Friendly town

Armacao de Pera is a small town which has expanded greatly in the last twenty years. Many of the new buildings are holiday apartments (many owned by people from other parts of Portugal) and the permanent population is lower than you would think. There are a lot of high-rise buildings and it is sometimes known as "skyscraper city", which leads to some guidebooks dismissing the place - unfairly, in my opinion. You don't really notice the high-rises when you're actually there. There is still the old heart of the town and it is still a fishing port where the boats can be seen being launched from the beach and hauled out of the water by tractor. There is a daily market for fresh fruit and veg, fish and meat, there are several supermarkets and small shops selling clothes, souvenirs etc, so everything you need is in the town and there's no need for a car as there are reasonable bus services along the coast and inland to Silves. It is a busy resort in the summer but quiet out of season, although even in winter there are still some restaurants, bars and cafes to choose from. However it is not the best place if you are looking for a lot of clubs and bars. Several restaurants do a three-course meal for 10 euros including wine. Those I have sampled were very good, excellent value. The locals are friendly and helpful.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The beach which stretches for miles, with a lovely recently-pedestrianised seafront.

Beautiful beach

I have been to Armacao de Pera several times, we try to visit the Algarve three times a year, January, May and October so all low season, and find we always gravitate to Armacao, probably because it has everything. It is a popular destination with Portuguese holiday-makers. A lot of guide-books seem to be dismissive of it as there are a lot of high-rise buildings, but we find the local people very friendly and helpful. It is quiet out-of-season but a lot of places cater for locals too so stay open all year. There are some good cafes and several restaurants. Pastelaria Tinirose (near the Post Office) is great for coffee and snacks, with very friendly owners and staff. There are shops and supermarkets for all your needs, and there are bus services to all the other towns round about, though it's handy to have a car to get to some of the remoter beaches. There is a fantastic long beach, with part of it being the fishing area where you can watch the fish being landed (you can buy it fresh at the morning market). Most of the beach is watched over by lifeguards in the summer. Towards the west the cliffs get higher and you can walk out along the cliff-tops and see the amazing coastal scenery. Although I said Armacao has everything, that doesn't seem to include a doctor apart from private ones. If you're relying on your EHIC and need to see a doctor, you will have to trek to Silves where there is a health centre with open-access GP surgery.

Quaint fishing village

This is a small old fishing village with narrow streets and a higgledy piggledy arrangements of shops. There are modern parts, but these tend to be apartments and restaurants. The beach is huge and includes at one end the local fishing fleet and market, where you can see the catch being landed and nets being repaired.the night life is restricted, but available.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Small and friendly with great beaches.

Friendly beachside resort

We have stayed several times in or around Armacao de Pera. There is a central section of older buildings, and the fishing boats are still launched from the beach, but most of the town consists of high-rise apartments. I think it gets a rough deal from some of the guide-books, as it has a beautiful seafront, with the promenade recently pedestrianised and landscaped. It is much less brash than Albufeira and much pleasanter IMHO. Most of the holiday makers are Portuguese and we find the people very friendly. There is a good selection of restaurants and bars, and several are very reasonably-priced. There are also several supermarkets if you are self-catering. You don't need a car as everything is to hand, and there is a reasonable bus service to Albufeira, Faro, Portimao and Lagos if you want to travel further afield.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The beach and nearby coastal scenery.

Family friendly

This is a lovely resort which is visited by a lot of Portuguese families. The beaches are fab, a great soft golden sand. though the undertow can be a bit of a problem some of the time. Plenty of wonderful restaurants with a host of fish and meat dishes. Pipa's restaurant has a good vegetarian menu.

Spectacular beach

Have known and loved Armacao for over 30 years and returned with some trepidation after a good 10 year absence this year. Yes, it has been developed and has sprawled back into the countryside - but along with that the sea front has been pedestrianised and modernised - and the character and feel of the place remain firmly intact. Nowhere else on the Algarve can beat that beach as far as we're concerned. Stepping one block back from the promenade and the inevitable tourist traps, the really excellent local restaurants are still in full swing and prices were surprisingly reasonable. Always has been a favourite destination for Portuguese from Lisbon and the north - who were there in force this August. Love it.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Not swarming with tourists. You know you're in Portugal!

A very quiet town, especially in the winter months

We went at the end of March beginning of April, the town was very quiet as expected. There are a few good places to eat at a good price. The town is not the most attractive with some highrise buildings and a strange road layout that has developed over the years. The seafront is very attractive and the beach is lovely all sand. For a winter break to relax and soak up the sunshine it is perfect, you do need a good hotel and if possible a car as if the weather is bad there is little to do in the town. At the time of year we go it is not for young people as there is very little for them to do although there may be more in the summer months.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The beach and seafront.
