St Pauls Bay Overview

St Paul’s Bay sits on the north-east coast of Malta, approximately 1 ½ hours away from the international airport. The bay actually consists of three main areas – the old town of St Pauls, lively Bugibba and Qawra. The old fishing village of St Pauls has grown to include the neighbouring resorts, forming one of the largest holiday destinations in Malta. The bay and nearby island of St Pauls play an important part in the islands history. Local legend supports the story that the Apostle Paul was being transported to Rome when the ship he was on was wrecked off the coast of Malta. The island is the site of the wreck and the legend is commemorated with a statue looking out over the sea from the remote island.

Enjoy the perfect diving conditions

The bay is three miles long and the shoreline is predominantly rocky other than a small beach at the northern end of the bay. The sweeping bay follows the headland to the east and Bugibba and Qawra beyond. The rocks help to create perfect conditions for diving and this is one of the real draws for tourists visiting St Paul’s Bay. For a softer, sandier, experience consider heading further north to Mellieha Bay or Golden Bay.

Party in Bugibba

Bugibba is one of Malta’s liveliest holiday resorts. You will find a great range of late night bars and live music venues as well as interesting range of places to eat along the sea front. Across the island to the west is the beautiful resort of Golden Sands. Further north on the east coast is the Bay of Mellieha – perfect for a range of water sports. Beyond Mellieha, Malta is more remote with only scattered villages. At the northern end of the island is a small ferry port offering direct access to neighbouring Comino and the Blue Lagoon.

Things to do in St Pauls Bay

On the beach in St Pauls Bay

The bay sweeps around from the north with Fort Campbell in the distance. There are several little coves and bays with some tourist development evident. The promenade runs all the way around the bay and passes along behind the quaint marina in St Pauls and then onwards into the hustle and bustle of Bugibba. At the far end of the headland the buildings disappear and you are left with a remote beauty spot beyond the Café del Mar. There are great views from here across to the mythical St Paul’s Island. The majority of the beach along this coastline is rocky but there are several areas of man-made beach and you will find easy access to the water. The diving and snorkelling in this area is unbeatable. There are several notable dive schools, particularly around Gilleru Harbour in St Pauls.

Top Tip:

There are several really nice beach clubs on the opposite side of the headland in Qawra.

Eat and drink in St Pauls Bay

St Paul’s Bay covers a wide area of coast but also covers a wide choice of places to eat and drink. The centre of Bugibba is packed with both bars and restaurants catering for the holiday market. You can eat good local food but can also find takeaway pizza, curry and kebabs. Further along the coast towards St Pauls there are some nice local restaurants overlooking the bay. You can enjoy the local catch, fresh on your plate. Around the bay in Qawra there are several fairly glamourous beach bars and clubs, perfect for a light lunch and a glass of chilled wine.

Top Tip:

Head to the Café del Mar in Qawra as the sun goes down and enjoy the chilled out vibe on the terrace.

St Pauls Bay nightlife

The range of options in this popular resort make it perfect for all. If you want a quiet night with cocktail in hand you can make the most of the old world charm in St Pauls. For a wild night, the bright lights of Bugibba are the place to be. There are over 100 bars and late night clubs in a relatively small area. You can take your pick from live music, DJs, karaoke, themed bars and beach bars. Around the bay, the more chilled out beach bars of Qawra attract a slightly more hip crowd.

Top Tip:

If you really want to step it up a gear, head to Paceville in St Julians. This is the official home of late night entertainment on the island. It’s only a 10 minute taxi ride away.

Shopping in St Pauls Bay

You will find the usual mixture of holiday resort shops with souvenirs, beach essentials and small supermarkets particularly conspicuous. Beyond that, there are some nice little boutiques selling local products including ceramics, lace wear and some jewellery. Sliema is the go to destination on the island for a real retail experience with two significant shopping centres. Beyond Sliema, the historic citadel of Valletta awaits. You can wander the old streets soaking up the atmosphere of the 16th century walled town.

Things to do in St Pauls Bay

Number one on the list has to be diving. There are some excellent diving schools in St Paul’s Bay. You can sign up as a beginner and will receive lessons in a salt water pool before being guided around the submerged wrecks littering the coastline. For a change of pace you can also head west to the Golden Sands beach resort. This tranquil little beach resort is a short distance across the island but will feel a world away. The UNESCO listed Valletta should definitely feature during your visit as well. The incredible fortifications of the town as well as the striking cathedral will make the trip worthwhile.

We Recommend

Damiano's

This wonderfully friendly Italian restaurant overlooks the pretty harbour of St Pauls. Damianos is the place to come for pizza. Wash it down with a few glasses of prosecco and enjoy the gently bobbing boats in the harbour.

The 1930's Carpentry Wine Bar

This quirky little bar is in the heart of St Pauls and is well worth a visit. The tiny little bar packs a welcoming punch. Call in for a glass of wine and some nibbles just to see the traditional wood work inspired décor.

Lost and Found Festival – April

If you’re a bit of raver and fancy a weekend of top DJs, boat parties and chilled out after parties then this is the event for you. The event is held along the north east coast with St Paul’s Bay in the thick of the action.
