Sliema Overview

Sliema is located on the north-east coast of Malta and is one of the main coastal resorts on the island. The dramatic rocky headland and natural harbour of Marsamxett provide a stunning location for this popular resort. Across the harbour is the imposing citadel of Valletta – only a short ferry ride away. On the harbour side of the headland you will find The Strand, the commercial hub of the resort with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to enjoy. Between the harbour and the sea front lies the modern Tigne Point shopping Centre.

Enjoy the bars and restaurants of Tower Road

Beyond the ancient fortifications on the headland lies the sea facing coastline. The Tower Road runs along the coast and is the real hub of all daytime and late night entertainment. By day you can sit and enjoy many cafes and restaurants. After dark you can enjoy a relaxing meal in one of the elegant restaurants or a late night drink in a local bar. The beaches are really just rocky shelves with no sand. There are several lidos dotted along the shoreline for swimming and there is access to the sea for diving and snorkelling.

Take a ferry to Valletta

Take a short ferry across the harbour and you arrive in the UNESCO listed fortress town of Valletta. The town was built on a natural outcrop of rock in the 16th century and stands beautifully preserved to this day. For sandy beaches and days out you may consider heading towards the Bay of Mellieha on the east coast or head west to the lovely Golden Beach.

Things to do in Sliema

On the beach in Sliema

The Tower Road runs all the way from the headland fort down to Balluta Bay.  This stretch of coast is entirely formed from rock with no sandy beaches. The flat rocky shelves are okay to sun bathe on and there is relatively easy access to the water. There are also several public lidos if you prefer to swim in a pool and bathe on a lounger. The broad promenade is lovely and you can walk the entire coastline with big views across the Mediterranean and inward across the harbour towards Portomaso Marina. There are some great open air restaurants and terraces along the promenade when you’re ready to refuel.

Eat and drink in Sliema

Sliema is split between the harbour facing, commercial centre built around The Strand and the ocean facing Tower Road. Both zones are great for a meal and a drink both day and night. The harbour side is busier with small cafes and bars set within the small street of the town. There are also some nice places to eat overlooking the harbour and Valletta beyond. Across the headland on the sea front you will find a great range of places to have a daytime snack, an ice cream or a coffee. There are also some stunning terrace restaurants serving beautifully fresh sea food with amazing views across the crystal clear water of St Julians’s Bay.

Sliema nightlife

The centre of Sliema has a good range of places for late night drinks from cosy wine bars to local bars and neon lit tourist bars. Many have stunning views across the water. If you are hoping to sample the famous Malta nightlife you may consider heading around the bay to Paceville. This purpose built leisure zone between Spinola Bay and St George’s Bay is home to a wide range of bars and clubs. From the main square there are four streets that act as the hub of the action - Dragonara Road, Wilga Street, St Georges Road and St. Rita Steps. The party may well rage all night but you will only be a 10 minute taxi away from your bed.

Shopping in Sliema

The Point Shopping Mall is the place to head for a multi-level, under one roof shopping experience. The mall is home to a wide range of international brand stores as well as places to eat and a children’s play area. The location on the headland is equally impressive and easily reached either by car or on foot. Closer to the commercial centre is The Plaza, another retail centre. For a taste of local life, take a walk through the streets of the town. You will find a nice selection of local stores specialising in silverwork, glass, lace, and pottery. There is also a daily market across the harbour in beautiful Valletta.

Things to see in Sliema

If you’ve never dived or snorkelled before, find a local dive school and give it a go. The lack of sand means the water is so much clearer. The rocky ledges and over hangs are great for exploring. You should also take the short ferry ride across the Marsamxett Harbour to the mighty walled city of Valletta. The city is great to walk around but the journey across the harbour will also give you a sense of the scale of the fortifications. Further up the coast is the popular Mediterraneo Marine Park.  You can swim with the dolphin and enjoy the sea lion show.

We Recommend

Fresco's Cafe & Restaurant

Frescos enjoys a privileged position over looking Exiles Bay at the far end of Tower Road. The views across the bay are worth the visit alone. The restaurant serves up Italian inspired main courses with some beautifully fresh fish dishes. Call in for a drink during the day and enjoy the view and the friendly welcome.

Tony’s Bar

Tony has found himself a very popular spot overlooking the Marsamxett Harbour. This small, friendly bar does a good line in English inspired food and offers big screen sport when required.

Sliema Arts Festival

The streets of Sliema will be transformed by both local and International artists during this special festival. There are other associated performances as well as music and parties. The festival is held in mid-July.

A great Place

, Rhosgoch Anglesey

I like Silema because of its level walking and the lovely harbour views over towards Valetta. It is an ideal place for travelling to both ends of the Northern coast of Malta The New shopping centre too is ultra modern, and combined with the new Arriva buses make this a great place to stay.

The best thing about my stay was ...

10/10 Amazing

i was not keen on silema to start with, but now i cant get enough

, Combe Martin

the shopping is world class, i personally dont like shopping, so my husband took the daughters out and i didnt see them for hours and hours and they came back loaded with bags and still had plenty of euros left. eating out is wide range, they dont skimp on the portions and if you choose well dont spend too much money. there are plenty of cafe stands to grab a coffee or juice. we found a few supermarkets in and around silema but the mini markets off the main street, wasnt that much more expensive. the vendors with trucks full of fruit and veg werent too bad either. there were plenty of filtered wi-fi spots that did work and of course some eaterys offered free wi-fi. the parks and walk ways from The point into St Julians were surperb and we walked that route daily. the only down side which we both found very annoying each day, was when we got to a certain point on the main drag in silema, the staff for all the cruises, tours, taxis, boats you name it, we got cornered every time. even when we tried to dodge them they hassled us. they even did it on the walk back one day, not recognising us from 60 minutes earlier... this put us off for a few days, then we just got curt with them! suprise suprise the most pushy ones were english !

The best thing about my stay was ...

the atmosphere of a buzzing place but with a quiet getway around the next bend

A VERY CENTRAL HEART OF MALTA

, Massa (Italy)

It was a perfect place for holidays, crowded but calm. It was near the Valletta (only 10-15 minutes by bus), the ferries to reach all places in Malta (boats for cruise), with a lot of good shops. It was perfect for families.

The best thing about my stay was ...

the proximity to all and the pacific place

10/10 Amazing

Sliema is a nice area to stay, it is central for going on boat trips, you can jump on the ferry and go over to Valletta or catch a bus which will take you to most places in Malta.

Lovely place to stay, spotlessly clean with beautiful views. Pebbles Restaurant was the best place to eat and when back there 4 times during our week there. Would highly recommend the ribeye steak, it was melt in the mouth. Close to St. Julians and Valletta. Would definitely go back to Sliema again.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Island possition.

10/10 Amazing

Good Location.

, Basildon

Although the hotel was not great the location was amazing. Although it says sliema, it closer to St Julians. Which is a lot better as there are shops, nightlife and restaurants. There are lovely restaurants along the road to St Julians, which will take you 5-10 minutes. The bus stop is right outside the hotel so you can even hop on a bus. Good thing with the buses, they go everywhere. If you are going anywhere in Malta, it will have to be Sliema or St Julians as they offer a lot more tourist attractions e.g. we got on a boat to the blue lagoon, which is on the island of comino just of Malta - takes an hour.Bus services, night life, Restaurant, experiences, days out, cafes, bars, etc.

The best thing about my stay was ...

the amount of stuff to do.
