Mellieha Overview

The old town of Mellieha sits proudly on a steep ridge, 18 miles north of Valletta. The town overlooks the impressive coastline of one of Malta’s finest beaches – Mellieha Bay. The town itself is built around a series of steep roads and narrow winding lanes. The centre of Mellieha is dominated by an impressive 18th century Baroque church. The steeps alleys and streets of the town are busy with small cafes and restaurants. From here it is a lazy 20 minute walk down the hill to the delights of the bay.

Take a dive in Mellieha Bay

The highlight of this area is undeniably the beach. Mellieha Bay is a long stretch of soft sand and gently shelving shoreline. The area is great for families and water sports enthusiasts alike. Top of the list is scuba diving. Mellieha Bay is recognised as one of the best resorts in the Mediterranean to dive. The majority of the hotels in the area are built around the bay and you can expect to find the very best facilities including cafes, bars and restaurants.

Visit Anchor Bay, the home of Popeye

Further afield, the bay acts as a gateway to the beaches in the north of the island and also the adjoining islands of Comino and Gozo. There are regular ferries to Comino. Across to the west is the original film set built for the Popeye movie, built around Anchor Bay. Locally, make a visit to the bird sanctuary at Ghardira, a former salt pan.

Things to do in Mellieha

On the beach in Mellieha

The broad sweeping Bay of Mellieha has a beautiful 800m long sandy beach, one of the few stretches of sand on the island. The beach has Blue Flag status and is extremely family friendly due to the clear sea and gently shelving bay. Water sports enthusiasts can take their pick from a range of activities including sea kayaking, water skiing and windsurfing. Diving and snorkelling are popular across Malta and there are several dive schools in the area. The bay has a good range of nice hotels as well as places to get day time refreshments or an evening meal. The beach has lifeguards throughout the summer months.

Top Tip:

The beach gets extremely busy on Sundays when the local population descend on the bay. If you want to stake a claim, get there early.

Eat and drink in Mellieha

The bay is home to a good range of places to eat and drink, particular during the day when you may just want a snack or light lunch with a cold drink to wash it down. There are more options the closer you come to the town. For a more authentic evening experience you might prefer to walk up the hill into the town of Mellieha. The steeps streets of the town are great to explore and you will find a good range of bars and restaurants. There are several with impressive views back over the bay.

Mellieha nightlife

You are unlikely to party through the night in Mellieha. The bars of the town are busy and you will find a good range to choose from but there is no clubbing scene. Most of the organised entertainment is within the larger hotels. You may find a tribute act or perhaps a karaoke evening to get involved in. Nearby Bugibba has a bit more to offer when it comes to late night fun while Paceville in St Julians acts as the real clubbing hub.

Shopping in Mellieha

You will find the holiday essentials are available locally with several supermarkets but there is not much else to keep the avid shopper happy in Mellieha. For a cultural day out with shopping thrown in, head to Valletta. The beautiful UNESCO listed city to the south is a shopper’s delight. The narrow streets are perfect for browsing and the local cafes are always on hand when the feet get tired. Across the harbour in Sliema you will find a modern indoor shopping centre on the headland called ‘The Point’.

Top Tip:

There are regular buses that run between Mellieha and Valletta. The journey should take about 40 minutes.

Things to see in Mellieha

The bay is the star and you should take every chance to enjoy the water. There are several dive schools as well as a number of points on the beach to hire kayaks and windsurfers. A short distance from the bay is the Red Tower, known locally as St Agatha’s Tower. This small 17th century fortress is great place to visit and the views form the tower across the bay and surrounding island are breath-taking. Further north, it is possible to catch the ferry across to the small neighbouring island of Comino. Take a chance to do this and swim in the famous Blue Lagoon. You should definitely take a trip to the imposing city of Valletta. The walled city and dramatic location jutting out into the harbour are stunning.

We Recommend

Rebekah's Restaurant

This restaurant is up the hill in the town, set in a converted old townhouse. The décor is very traditional and the leafy terrace is a delight. The well cooked food is presented in a surprisingly contemporary manner. You can expect excellent sea food and lovely pieces of meat.

Billy's Musiclub

A warm welcome, a cold drink and a sing along await all who enter Billy’s Bar. This lively little bar on the main street in the town is popular with both locals and visitors. There are regular parties and live acts. The bar does a good range of meals as well.

Mellieha Village Festa – August 30th

This week long celebration of ‘Our Lady of Victories’ sees the small town of Mellieha come alive with parades, processions, parties and a lot of fireworks. The celebrations end with the Status of Our Lady being carried through the streets of the town to the lively tunes of the local marching band.

Largely uncommercialised but yet has all you require. Loads of restaurants in the main town - many quite similar - pizza, pasta etc did not have a bad meal Less successful in the beach resort down the hill although a great setting Upmarket both the Arches and Rebekkas were truly fantastic but not cheap The little mini market oposite the main entrance to Pergola Hotel has all main requirements and is cheaper than the markets on the main street.

A nice, hilly village that probably caters for married couples.

, Galway

A nice, hilly village that probably caters for married couples moreso than singles. We attended a wedding reception there and it couldnt have been more suitable.. The town is a little hilly for those who dont enjoy climbing hills in heat but very pretty also. Some nice places to eat, Ta' Peters serving excellent local fish and the Maratimes Pizzeria catering for all needs.

I really like Mellieha its quiet and ideal for chilling out. Only problem was heading into town in the evenings bus's didnt run regular and it was hard to get a taxi if you didnt order one but i believe the bus service is now privatised so when it says there is a bus at 23.00, then there will be.
