Venice is a city without cars, built on a lagoon; with boats being the usual mode of transport. This and the city’s long history, make the Italian city a unique place to visit. The best time to visit is during spring or autumn when the temperatures are still warm but the city is less humid.

Don’t miss……
The Piazza San Marco is one of Venice’s most famous landmarks. During the day it is full of people taking in the sights, having a drink in a café and listening to classical music. This is where the Torre dell’Orologio (Clock Tower) can be found, featuring a newly restored astronomical clock. Guided tours allow views of the actual clock mechanism and rooftop bell. The Museo Correr is also located here with its collection of globes dating back to the 16th century.

The Basilica di San Marco is a spectacular Byzantine cathedral not far from the Piazza San Marco. It is free to visit and the mosaic interior is just as impressive as the outdoor architecture.

The Rialto Bridge is one of Venice’s most recognisable landmarks. Built in the late 1500’s it was for hundreds of years, the only way to cross the Grand Canal by foot. Other impressive bridges are the Bridge of Sighs and the Accademia Bridge. Whilst in the area, you might as well take a stroll around the Rialto markets and sample some of the fresh fish, fruit and vegetables.

Other impressive landmarks include the Dogana di Mare (Sea Customs Post), the Campanile di San Marco and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum (a personal collection of modern art, including work by Picasso, Dali, Pollock, Kandinsky and Duchamp).

Shop until you drop!
If you’re not shopped out after a trip around the Rialto Markets, San Marco is where you can find your high fashion boutiques and big designer labels. Bargain hunters should head to the Mercerie close to the Rialto and if it’s souvenirs you’re after, check out the Strada Nova.

Visit the islands…
Venice is made up of around 100 different islands that are all accessible via waterbus. The island of Murano features a glassmaking museum where you can watch an authentic glassmaker at work. A similar lace museum can be found on the island of Burano which is also famous for having brightly coloured houses. San Michele used to be a prison island now used as Venice’s cemetery, full of manicured gardens, trees, monuments and yes, more than a few graves.

Row, row, row, (well punt actually) your boat…
Vaporettos (water buses) are cheap and easy ways to get around the city and a great way to view it. Gondola rides (where a personal Gondolier punts you around the sights of the city) are expensive but can be made cheaper by booking in advance and for a group. Traghetto gondola ferries (gondolas stripped of the luxury trimmings) are another cheaper alternative.

Important Information to consider when visiting Venice…
Due to the location of hotels in and around Venice, any transfer shuttle bus service may not be able to drop you at your hotel but will take you as close to your hotel as possible, with further instructions given as how to reach your accommodation. There is also a city tax to take into consideration, charged per person, per night and can vary depending upon the star rating of the hotel and the time of year in which you travel.

I absolutely fell in love in with this beautiful city, words nor pictures can describe how both myself and fiance felt whilst we were there! The food was amazing! The people were lovely! Venezia is now my favourite city in the world! Venice is so magical and romantic, I think that's why my boyfriend proposed to me here on a Gondola on the Grand Canal!

The best thing about my stay was ...

Sitting under the Rialto Bridge

Venice is one of the most beautiful places to visit. It is romantic and exciting, even with the crowds. I will certainly be back.

Beautiful, Ancient, but needs more toilets

Venice is beautiful, just like a living museum. The transport (boats) around the lagoon are frequent, on time and good value. ( Buy a pass and you can travel as many times as you want. We hopped on and off to visit the many islands in the lagoon and a holiday must- up the grand canal. The toilets are expensive 1.5 euros per trip!! Meals are good value providing you stay away from the main tourist hotspots. ( St Marks Square, Rialto Bridge). The Italians are lovely people, and made our stay a pleasure, and what is really nice is actually going to a country where the true culture has been preserved.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Sights, history , the people

Wonderful, Unique city

We love everything about Venice. We have been twice. The uniqueness of the city with no vehicles of any kind is especially nice. We love the little alleyways and squares. We love to explore and see what we find around the next corner. We love St. Mark's cathedral and the Doge palace as well as museums. Of course the food is worth the trip

Dream Location

We have been to Venice many times, but never stayed in Venice. April was a good time to go, as not too busy. For great value buy a pass for the water bus and go to Burano, Murano, Torelli and even Lido De Jesolo and to finish off a trip up the Grande Canal on the No.1 vaporette, all for the cost of 16 euros for a 12 hour pass. To eat out move away from the main areas and you will find excellent restaurants at a fraction of the price. Also walk everywhere and lose yourself in the back streets. This will let you see the real Venice. Venice is an experience of a lifetime - Enjoy.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Travelling up the Grande Canal in a water bus at night.

Venice - Leave the beaten paths

Venice is wonderful and terrible at the same time. The charm is of Venice largely superior to the irritations that are so common to all of the world's touristic top spots. Vendors of all kind of rubbish, burglars, ridiculous prices for drinks, bad and expensive food etc. You can avoid the hyper frequented areas though, or visit them early in the morning. BTW The San Marco Place looks not good for the moment because of huge fences (work in progress). My comments shouldn't convince you not to go though. To really discover the uniqueness of Venice demands some effort, but you will be rewarded. Leave the beaten paths and explore for yourself. There are also good restaurants with fair prices, but just go some hundreds of meters away from the hot spots (and use trip advisor). I personally visited a lot of exhibitions in the center of town, linked to the Art Biennale. This gives you free access to wonderful palazzos and churches even if you are not an amateur of art. And you are often alone in there or only with a few people.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Surprises at every corner - beauty all around - good food if you get good information

one of the most amazing cities, where you get lost almost every minute, walking around trying to find the guidebook attraction and almost always missing it. There you need just wander and be surprised by every turn in the city maize by empty square after trying for ages to avoid dead-end alleys. Toyshop bridges over the fairytale canals which are unspoiled by tourist crowds

The best thing about my stay was ...

the washing lines over medieval streets...

Magic City

I thought Venice was a most beautiful city, there is not another like it. The culture, interesting beautiful architecture and of course the water, the gondolas, the form of travel. The lack of land traffic makes it quiet and life seems to be unrushed and relaxed, not the rushing around and restlessness of cities with land traffic. Despite the many tourists there is an element of peace about it. I have fallen in love with Venice. I also found the Venetians warm and friendly, ready to help if you had lost your way, (something that is quite easy to happen).

The best thing about my stay was ...

It's beauty and culture - it is unique.
