Stalis is the quiet neighbour to rowdy Malia and lively Hersonissos on the northern coast of Crete. This area only really developed in the 1980s. Prior to this there wasn’t much more than a beach for the villagers of nearby Mohos to enjoy during the summer months. The relatively sedate nature of Stalis and the perfect four mile stretch of beach make this a perfect family destination.

The beach is the star of the show

The undoubted star of the show is the beach that runs east towards Malia. The whole coastline has become one long super resort and the endless miles of soft sand and gently shelving shoreline reflect this. From the quieter west end across towards Malia in the east you are sure to find your perfect spot. Inland from the beach, the coast road leads you from Hersonissos to the west via Stalis towards Malia. During the summer months this road is closed to traffic in the evenings allowing you to take long night-time strolls as far as your legs will carry you.

Hilltop town of Mohos

The resort centre has more than its fair share of tavernas, cafes and bars with the extended coastline in either direction offering as much nightlife as you can handle. Away from the coast lies the imposing hill top town of Mohos, offering stunning views back across Stalis and the surrounding coastline. The area is perfect for sightseeing with an interesting and varied range of nearby resorts and larger towns including Heraklion within easy reach.

Things to do in Stalis

On the beach in Stalis

The beautiful beach of Stalis has drawn both locals and visitors for many years. The western end is much quieter and is perfect for families looking for safe beaches and shallow waters for paddling. As you head east towards Malia the beaches become more crowded. Water sports enthusiasts should head east for a fantastic range of activities. The whole coast is well served by local cafes, tavernas and shops selling every imaginable beach essential.

Eat and drink in Stalis

The sea front is busy with restaurants serving both local meat and fish dishes as well as places aimed at the international market with Italian, Indian and Mexican restaurants most popular. There are also some excellent day time cafes for breakfast or a cup of coffee and a snack. The well connected resort centre makes it possible to try restaurants in nearby Malia and Hersonissos. For a trip back in time, follow the winding road up to Mohos and find a local restaurant to enjoy the best in Cretan specialities. Afterwards, enjoy a drink looking over the sparking lights of this spectacular coastline.

Top Tip:

Once per week during the summer, Mohos hosts a Cretan night with traditional dancing and music in the square.

Stalis nightlife

The centre of Stalis is quieter than Malia up the road. The resort is aimed squarely at couples and families and the local nightlife reflects this. After a lazy day on the beautiful beach the local bars are busy with people enjoying a quiet drink. You will find a good range of bars along the beach road including themed pubs and cocktail bars. The friendly locals add a touch of authenticity to some of the bars. If you need more it is nearby take either a nice walk or a short taxi and you’re in the beating heart of Malia complete with all the clubs and bars you could wish for.

Top Tip:

Malia Old Town offers a great range of authentic bars and tavernas if you do venture east.

Shopping in Stalis

The shopping in Stalis is limited to supermarkets and stores selling beach essentials and souvenirs. There are cash points in Stalis, for a bank you will need to head into either Hersonissos or Malia. If you are in need of a serious shopping experience then consider the bus into Heraklion. This beautiful city offers a fantastic range of boutiques specialising in leather goods, ceramics and jewellery as well as fashion and souvenirs. If you’re a market lover you might enjoy the Saturday market in Heraklion. The buses are regular and the journey will take about 45 minutes. The market is full of local produce and is a really interesting insight into the way the local population shop.

Things to see in Stalis

Stalis is a wonderfully relaxing resort. You might decide that all you want to do is take a stroll and enjoy the sun setting to the west. For the more energetic nearby Mohos is a well worth the winding up hill walk. Along the coast in either direction are numerous towns and resorts to explore from rowdy Malia to cosmopolitan Heraklion. Families might like to make the most of the many water parks along the northern coast with Hersonissos the nearest option. Off shore, take the short trip to the island of Dia an uninhabited island full of intrigue and mystery. It is rumoured to be the island that Theseus escaped to after slaying the Minotaur. There are regular ferries from the sea port of Heraklion. Further off the coast of Crete lies the beautiful island of Santorini.
