Stalis Overview

Stalis is the quiet neighbour to rowdy Malia and lively Hersonissos on the northern coast of Crete. This area only really developed in the 1980s. Prior to this there wasn’t much more than a beach for the villagers of nearby Mohos to enjoy during the summer months. The relatively sedate nature of Stalis and the perfect four mile stretch of beach make this a perfect family destination.

The beach is the star of the show

The undoubted star of the show is the beach that runs east towards Malia. The whole coastline has become one long super resort and the endless miles of soft sand and gently shelving shoreline reflect this. From the quieter west end across towards Malia in the east you are sure to find your perfect spot. Inland from the beach, the coast road leads you from Hersonissos to the west via Stalis towards Malia. During the summer months this road is closed to traffic in the evenings allowing you to take long night-time strolls as far as your legs will carry you.

Hilltop town of Mohos

The resort centre has more than its fair share of tavernas, cafes and bars with the extended coastline in either direction offering as much nightlife as you can handle. Away from the coast lies the imposing hill top town of Mohos, offering stunning views back across Stalis and the surrounding coastline. The area is perfect for sightseeing with an interesting and varied range of nearby resorts and larger towns including Heraklion within easy reach.

Things to do in Stalis

On the beach in Stalis

The beautiful beach of Stalis has drawn both locals and visitors for many years. The western end is much quieter and is perfect for families looking for safe beaches and shallow waters for paddling. As you head east towards Malia the beaches become more crowded. Water sports enthusiasts should head east for a fantastic range of activities. The whole coast is well served by local cafes, tavernas and shops selling every imaginable beach essential.

Eat and drink in Stalis

The sea front is busy with restaurants serving both local meat and fish dishes as well as places aimed at the international market with Italian, Indian and Mexican restaurants most popular. There are also some excellent day time cafes for breakfast or a cup of coffee and a snack. The well connected resort centre makes it possible to try restaurants in nearby Malia and Hersonissos. For a trip back in time, follow the winding road up to Mohos and find a local restaurant to enjoy the best in Cretan specialities. Afterwards, enjoy a drink looking over the sparking lights of this spectacular coastline.

Top Tip:

Once per week during the summer, Mohos hosts a Cretan night with traditional dancing and music in the square.

Stalis nightlife

The centre of Stalis is quieter than Malia up the road. The resort is aimed squarely at couples and families and the local nightlife reflects this. After a lazy day on the beautiful beach the local bars are busy with people enjoying a quiet drink. You will find a good range of bars along the beach road including themed pubs and cocktail bars. The friendly locals add a touch of authenticity to some of the bars. If you need more it is nearby take either a nice walk or a short taxi and you’re in the beating heart of Malia complete with all the clubs and bars you could wish for.

Top Tip:

Malia Old Town offers a great range of authentic bars and tavernas if you do venture east.

Shopping in Stalis

The shopping in Stalis is limited to supermarkets and stores selling beach essentials and souvenirs. There are cash points in Stalis, for a bank you will need to head into either Hersonissos or Malia. If you are in need of a serious shopping experience then consider the bus into Heraklion. This beautiful city offers a fantastic range of boutiques specialising in leather goods, ceramics and jewellery as well as fashion and souvenirs. If you’re a market lover you might enjoy the Saturday market in Heraklion. The buses are regular and the journey will take about 45 minutes. The market is full of local produce and is a really interesting insight into the way the local population shop.

Things to see in Stalis

Stalis is a wonderfully relaxing resort. You might decide that all you want to do is take a stroll and enjoy the sun setting to the west. For the more energetic nearby Mohos is a well worth the winding up hill walk. Along the coast in either direction are numerous towns and resorts to explore from rowdy Malia to cosmopolitan Heraklion. Families might like to make the most of the many water parks along the northern coast with Hersonissos the nearest option. Off shore, take the short trip to the island of Dia an uninhabited island full of intrigue and mystery. It is rumoured to be the island that Theseus escaped to after slaying the Minotaur. There are regular ferries from the sea port of Heraklion. Further off the coast of Crete lies the beautiful island of Santorini.

We Recommend

Kelariko Restaurant

An ever popular restaurant tucked away on a small street behind the main beach road. The Kelariko serves up authentic Cretan dishes with a smile. The staff make you feel like one of the family and the food is lovingly prepared.

Nemo Beach Bar

The Nemo Beach Bar is on the main road running through the resort and is the perfect place to enjoy the spectacular views of the beach. Whether you need the shade of the main bar or want some sun on the terrace, this is the place to enjoy a cocktail. The attached crazy golf course will go down well with the kids.

10/10 Amazing

Stalis is an amazing resort - would recommend it to anyone!!

, Ipswich

I absolutely adored Stalis. There were just so many fabulous restaurants and lots of places to stay depending on your budget. The one restaurant I have to mention by name is "Golden Heart" which is up the hill at the end of the resort furthest away from Malia on the beach side. The owner and everyone who works there could not be friendlier and however much or little you spend, you are treated like royalty!! The Cactus Hotel looked absolutely glorious if you want 4 star accommodation. Everyone was so friendly from the people working in the restaurants and supermarkets to the dustmen who used to wink and say hello when we went out for our early morning walks!! There was always a lovely breeze too (in fact it got a bit too strong on a couple of days) which kept you cool enough even in August. I would go back in a heartbeat if only Easyjet flew there from Stansted airport!!!!

The best thing about my stay was ...

The choice of restaurants, some with fabulous views

10/10 Amazing

The best thing about my stay was ...

beer at between 1.50 and 2 at most places

8/10 Great

great holiday

, sheffield

decent beaches, good variety of bars and restaurants

8/10 Great

Had everything to suit our family needs

, Leeds

The beaches and water sports were excellent. Numerous shops, bars, restaurants which had everything we needed. Not too busy and suited a family with varying ages. Although 'the strip' where all the shops, bars restaurants are located has a very busy road running through it.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Suits all ages. The beaches and blue sea.

8/10 Great

An excellent family resort

, Pontefract

Stalis has a nice beach good restaurants and friendly bars. We found prices to be about the same as here and would return.

The best thing about my stay was ...

A very comfortable atmosphere

6/10 Good

stalis

, Liverpool

stalis is a small resort with all bars / restaurants being set along beach road . the down side is if you not on beach front its quite hilly. if you are not a " lay on the beach all day " person theres not much else here.

The best thing about my stay was ...

swimming in the sea

6/10 Good

Nice but not the prettiest place I have stopped

, Nottingham

Plenty of bars and restaurants, lacked a bit of atmosphere due to the economic climate and that was July - peak season

The best thing about my stay was ...

Beacj

6/10 Good

stalis - good choice between malia and hersonissos

, Coventry

good points: nice beach, cheaper shops compare to other towns, close to main road and airport.

4/10 Average

Nice restaurants, however.............

, grimsby

There are some nice eating places down the Beach Road, however, if that is all you want (apart from shops) then there is very little else apart from some cheap(ish) bars. However, I would recomend some restaurants and bars for a friendly reception:- RESTAURANTS: Marias Beach (excellent); Dianamos (good - except for carrots); Hellas (reasonable); Creta Beach (ok); Maestrali (excellent chef, pleasant surroundings, friendly service [worth a vist]) BARS: The Red Lion (good quiz, bingo, karaoke ;though very hot & airless without air-con]); Rovers Return ([apart from the cheesy name], good quiz, pleasant staff, a relaxing night out)

The best thing about my stay was ...

Nice views (though nothing to return to)

2/10 Okay

Touristic

, Oslo

Fits best if one is interested in exploring the areas around Stalis or then interested in "plastic" things. But the beach is good and fits also children.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Central location

2/10 Okay

not a lot to do or see.

, Ellesmere Port

boring

The best thing about my stay was ...

nothing
