Sissi Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Sissi

Sit back and think of picture perfect sea views, colourful fishing boats gently bobbing in a turquoise sea and alluring mountains towering over a pristine beach - you’ve just imagined Sissi on the fantastic island of Crete.

Crete is the largest of all the Greek islands and is located at the southern edge of the Aegean Sea. Sissi is only 45km east of the town of Heraklion and this tranquil village is a far cry from the nearby tourist hubs of Hersonissos (21 km away) or Malia (8 km). Peaceful, authentic and perfect for families or couples looking for a romantic getaway, accommodation here suits every taste and budget, from low key apartments and villas to upmarket hotels offering a range of boards.

Where to stay

Central Sissi Village

The village of Sissi is characterised by its beautiful whitewashed houses, blossoming bougainvillaea, narrow winding streets and picture-perfect shop fronts. Have your camera ready as there’s plenty of photo opportunities! Accommodation here offers something for everyone, from boutique B&Bs to small hotels and larger resorts. Home to a good range of shops, amenities and supermarkets everything’s on hand for an easy, relaxing holiday.

Milatos

Milatos is a tiny village which is home to only around 20-30 people including a small expat community. The pride and joy of Milatos is its stunning harbour with its small, sheltered bay and a handful of family run tavernas and cafes. Fresh fish is top of most menus here and, like neighbouring Sissi, you’ll spot lots of fishermen eagerly landing the day’s catch.

Milatos is a quiet part of the wider area of Lassithi, and is the ultimate retreat for anyone wanting to relax and unwind. The best option here is to rent a self-catering apartment although there are a handful of boutique hotels and villas to choose from as well. While you’re here, don’t forget to check out the fantastic Milatos Caves too!

What to see

Sissi boasts several amazing small beaches that are well protected from the northerly Meltemia winds. It’s a great spot to sit back and watch the world go by, away from the throng of the neighbouring popular coastal towns. To the east you’ll find Boufos Beach which is relatively developed with its sunbeds and umbrellas for hire in the summer months. The beach is a mix of sand and rocks so water shoes are a good idea here. If you get peckish, there’s a nice little snack bar too that overlooks the sea. Heading a bit further east of Boufos Beach you’ll come across the Avlaki which translates as “the little garden” and is a small beach that was formed at the exit of a narrow bay.

During your trip to Sissi, it’s also well worth exploring one of the Minoan palaces of Crete, the Palace of Malia, 4km to the west. Excavated in 1915, its first inhabitants lived at the palace during the Neolithic and early Minoan period (6000-2000 BC).

Nightlife

Sissi is more geared to families than party goers although there are plenty of bars and cafes playing music throughout the evening. But for a night out that’s a little more energetic, the neon lights of Malia’s bar-spangled strip are an easy 15-minute taxi ride away. Start things off with a couple of drinks in a bar (there’s no shortage of options!) before taking your pick of the nightclubs. During the hot summer nights, big-name DJs perform here and there are all sorts of themed evenings too. Silent discos, pool parties and foam – it’s all happening!

What to eat

There are a wide variety of restaurants, bars, pubs and traditional Greek taverns to be discovered in Sissi and surrounding areas ranging from casual budget options to luxury cuisine. Seafood is the big thing here, with lobster, prawns and sea bass being particular favourites – it’s all incredibly fresh too.

Shopping

If you love sun-kissed cobbled streets with the faint aroma of pine trees in the air then Sissi is for you. Here pretty Greek shops sell gorgeous handmade trinkets and bottles of virgin olive oil while the supermarkets have the essentials covered like bread, drinks and toiletries. There are a couple of pharmacies here too offering everything from sun cream to plasters.

Traditional Greek resort

Sissi is a traditional Greek resort, small but with a variety of good harbourside restaurants. Rocky beach next to the village but a small bay within 15 minutes walk. Although rocky the beach in the village can be accessed by pathways and is very pretty. A variety of local gift shops and bars in a very safe and family friendly environment.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Friendly local community, good value restaurants and very safe!

A good location

Sissi is a small fishing village just to the east of the livelier resorts. It has a number of good restuarants, in particular we found that the Neromilos restaurant, which is on the edge of the village on the road out (Burnt orange in colour) was really good. Nicci, the proprietor will make you feel very welcome, and you will be eating with a mixture of locals and a few visitors. The restaurant is a 10 minute walk, but in my opinion well worth the effort.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The Harbour, and Neromilos restaurant
