Malia Overview

Welcome to Malia, Crete’s party capital. Situated on the northern coast, this lively resort continues to draw a young, excited crowd year after year. The modern resort masks a beautiful old town and a significant history. The more or less continuous three mile stretch of beach provides a day time playground for all.

Malia comes alive after dark

Once the sun dips into the Mediterranean, Malia comes alive. The main strip is lined with bars, restaurant and clubs. The resort attracts the very best DJs as well as live acts ensuring Malia attracts a party hungry crowd. The range of accommodation on offer reflects the market and there is no shortage of apartment blocks and small hotels lining the Malia coast.

Explore the ancient old town

The beautiful beaches provide a more relaxed day time backdrop with six beaches making up the three mile stretch from Malia east towards the Minoan Palace of Malia. The central area is most popular with recovering party goers. The further east you head the quieter the coastline becomes. Inland from the beach and the bars lies a quaint old town complete with cobbled alleys, little squares and ancient churches.

Things to do in Malia

On the beach in Malia

The central beach is the most popular with visiting holidaymakers. You can choose between lazing under a parasol or making the most of the numerous water based activities including the ‘Big Banana’ and parascending. The beaches of Malia run east from the resort centre and you are never far away from a beach bar or restaurant. Sun Beach is great for the family with a kid’s pool and lots of safe paddling space. If you keep walking you reach the quieter Potamos Beach, a favourite with the locals. West of Malia lies the resort of Stalis and there are yet more beaches within easy walking distance of the resort.

Eat and drink in Malia

The strip is busy with fast food joints and restaurants serving up familiar favourites to an international market. Snack bars and cafes turn out cheap, filling options both day and night. The beach front also has a great range of bars and cafes, perfect for a mid-afternoon snack and cold drink. If you are looking for a more traditional experience simply stay south of the strip and you will be transported into a different world. The neon strip is replaced by quaint cobble streets and authentic tavernas serving up local dishes.

Malia nightlife

Malia Beach Road is the beating heart of the late night scene in Malia. The party really gets going after 11pm and runs into the early hours. The road is closed to traffic in the evening and the whole street becomes a party zone. This road runs from the old town down towards the beach and is lined with bars, cafes, restaurants and clubs. You will find live music venues, karaoke, cocktail bars, clubs and an endless supply of places to eat. The resort manages to attract a superb range of both live acts and DJs making it a party capital to rival Ibiza. This stretch of late night entertainment runs all the way towards Stalis and Heraklion is a relatively short distance away if you want a change.

Top Tip:

To avoid this party zone stay south of the main road and head into the Old Town for a quieter drink and meal.

Shopping in Malia

The centre of the resort is busy with convenience stores and mini markets full of typical holiday essentials. There are ATMs in the centre so cash is not a problem. Look out for local stores selling speciality goods including ceramics, leather goods and jewellery. For a more serious shopping expedition take a short bus ride into Heraklion, home to a wide range of larger stores and boutiques. There are also daily markets in the streets of Heraklion.

Top Tip:

The pick of the Heraklion markets is held every Saturday between 8am and 2pm on Patelles Laiki Street.

Things to see in Malia

The younger crowd are really spoilt for choice with four water parks in the area. Water City and Aqua Plus are set into the hillside overlooking the coast and offer stunning views as well as a wide range of thrilling slides and pools to enjoy. Down in the resort you will find an incredible range of activities from fishing trips to golf via go karting and jeep safari. For a more cultural visit, the ancient Minoan Palace of Malia is only 2 miles outside the resort. This 4,000 year old site was treated as a summer retreat by the Minoan Kings. Off shore, the stunning island of Santorini can be easily reached with regular sailings from Heraklion.

Top Tip:

Discover Malia Old Town. The town is tucked away behind the Agios Nektarios church but is well worth exploring with four churches and maze of quaint cobbled streets waiting for you.

We Recommend

Loft Bar and Club

This ever popular bar and club is at the top of Beach Road, nearest to the Old Town. You can expect regular drinks offers and an incredible atmosphere seven nights a week.

Milos Taverna

Set in the heart of the Old Town, this family run taverna offers a real taste of Crete. The outdoor terrace is beautifully lit up in the evening and you are sure of a warm welcome.

, Brighton

Best week of my life (sad as it sounds)! I went in August 2011 with my 3 best friends and it was amazing. Bars and clubs were all really good and people were all really nice. Alcohol was really cheap as well. Great for a holiday with your friends. I'm going back again next year! x

Everything we'd hoped for...

Great town, the strip during the day and night is always busy and the drinks are so cheap. Definitely had our fill of shots and peach fishbowls...

The best thing about my stay was ...

Couldn't pick one thing. Just all of it.

Party, Party, Party

, Doncaster

Malia is one big party. If you want a relaxing holiday don't go here. Its mental all day and night and I was more tired when I got home than I was before I went. Saying that it was ace. There were 5 lads in our group and we had a amazing week. The resort itself was quite nice. It wasn't as trashy as I thought it might of been but it is definately for the younger people. We were all in our late 20's and it felt like we were too old as most of the people there were between 18-22. If your looking for an 18-30 type holiday with your mates then I'd recommend doing it. The night life hours are 12am-5am so we usually had a quick kip about 7pm-10pm got ready and hit the hotel bar about 11pm. Its a good place and after about 3 days you know the resort inside out. The strip is faily long takes about 15 mins to walk from top to bottom and theres loads of bars and places to eat.

8/10 Great

Just outside Malia - quiet and friendly

, Southampton

Just returned from a 5 day break just outside Malia - mid September and everything is packing up - bars/restaurants/clubs are quiet if not closed. Lovely area - great atmosphere in the evenings but just so quiet. Went into Malia a couple of times for shopping and drinks and it has plenty of everything you would expect of a holiday resort, tourist shops etc.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Plenty of selection of bars, restaurants, shops etc.

6/10 Good

Lively

, England

Just great

The best thing about my stay was ...

Lively

6/10 Good

Lively and cheap for everything

, Reading

When we first walked down the main Malia Beach road it seemed pretty run down, with a lot of closed down bars but visiting it again at night we realised that many of the bars don't actually open until 10 or 11 pm. Every bar had people outside competing to offer the most drink for the least money but unlike some places they did at least do it with good humour and were quite friendly even if you said no thank you. We found everyone quite welcoming but as we were a family we were back in our hotel before the worst excesses of drunken behaviour were evident. I can honestly say we enjoyed being in the resort although our hotel was in a quiet area so we could escape the 'livelier' aspects when we wished. The beach is lovely and sandy with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas with a good selection of water sports. The nearby Palace of Malia is fascinating if you enjoy history. Meals out are good value with a good selection of restaurants on the main strip but for a more authentic Cretan experience try Malia old town where there are more traditional Tavernas. One big point if you are visiting with children, the locals seem to think it perfectly acceptable to display hard-core pornography and other sexual items on the same shelf as souvenirs designed to appeal to kids. Several times I had to quickly steer my kids away from the most graphic material you can imagine whilst they were browsing for knick-knacks. There is no attempt to even place it at the back of the shop or on a high shelf, it often confronts you as you walk in the door so it's something to be aware of if that kind of thing bothers you.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The beach, Value for money food and drink and the best quality knock-offs I've seen!

6/10 Good

Bit quiet for mid June

, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire

Loads of bars and clubs on offer, but I thought the strip was a bit quiet during the 4 days we stayed mid June 2011. The financial crisis in Greece at the time of writing this probably did not help...

The best thing about my stay was ...

The choice of bars
