Lefkada is one of the Ioanian Islands located off the west coast of the mainland. As well as being the 4th largest island in Greece, Lefkada is also the only island connected to the mainland via a bridge. This ease of access makes it a very popular destination for domestic tourists.
Visitors to Lefkada are in for a treat with over 100 kilometres of coastline, mountains, lakes, lush hillsides and beautiful towns and villages.
The beaches are a real highlight. Porto Katsiki is a great beach, south east of Lefkada Town. Egremni is an alternative, 30 kilometres from Lefkada. Spend your days making the most of the endless summer sun. Watersports are an ever present feature of most beaches and a great chance to be on, or under, the crystal clear water.
Lefkada Town is the capital of the island. It is in the north and easily accessible via the bridge from the mainland. The great earthquake of 1953 virtually destroyed this town, amongst others. Some ancient landmarks survived and the rest of the town was slowly rebuilt. Today you will find quaint colourful houses, little alleyways to explore and an impressive marina.
Other popular resorts on the island include Nidri, the main holiday destination on Lefkada. This resort is ideal for an active, fun filled holiday. A nice alternative to consider is the picturesque Agios Nikitas. The resort is in an amazing natural bay with olive groves and lush vegetation lining the hills around the town.
Despite the impact the earthquake of 1953 had, the island is still a haven for culture lovers. Take the time to visit the medieval Venetian Castle of Santa Maura, built in the 14th century to fortify the old town of Lefkada. The Waterfalls of Dimossari are also popular, take your swim suit and cool off in the lakes surrounding the falls.
Lefkada is a wonderful, accessible island. Perfect for families and couples looking for an active summer break in a picturesque setting.
