Gouves is situated on the east coast of Crete and is situated approximately 20 kilometres from the capital, Heraklion. The wonderful temperate Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers mixed with golden sandy Blue flag beaches make Gouves a haven for all those beach lovers and those seeking a relaxing sun-drenched break in Crete. When you tire of sun-bathing, hit the crystal clear waters of Gouves for a little water sports or head to the nearby water park for a ride down the lazy river or fast and furious trip down the water slides. For those seeking a little culture and history a trip to nearby Spinalonga or explore the mystical Minoan Palace of Knossos with its mind-boggling history. When the sun sets, take a stroll along the promenade and enjoy a meal in one of the seafront restaurants followed by a relaxing drink in a local taverna. The fuss-free sun-drenched resort allows visitors to relax and un-wind into the traditional Greek way of life.

10/10 Amazing

Plenty to do but retains a quiet atmosphere, great holiday base

Various beaches from sandy to rocky, quiet to busy. Watersports, plenty of tavernas and little stores as well as tourist gift shops, jewellers, medical centre, supermarkets. Close to many historical sites, the mountains, Heraklion, Chersonnissos and a great base to travel further afield from. Beautiful marina and great Thalassacosmos Aquarium to visit. Pony & Cart rides around the area and also little train that runs along the beach road and back every so often. Bus routes easy to use on the main road to Heraklion and such like. Pano Gouves village is beautiful and more traditional - whereas Kato Gouves is geared for the tourists - but it has not been over done and is a really enjoyable place to stay in. All in all a perfect base to travel around from.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Proximity to practically anywhere you want to go

Gouves

Gouves is a lovely holiday destination if you are wanting a quiet, relaxing holiday away from all the hustle and bustle of England. It has some stunning views, lovely little tavernas along the sea front and plenty of sandy beaches and little shops for souvenirs. The people are so friendly you will want to go time and again.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The people and beaches

Lovely family village

Gouves is a lovely small village around half an hour from Heraklion Airport. There are some nice restaurants, bars and beaches and I would say it is a lovely place for a family with small children.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The family restaurants

Sleepy town.

Stayed in Gouves several times über past 12 years. A small, but spread out town, it is a very friendly place, once heaving with excellent restaurants, bars cages and shops, however, do to the latest fad of 'all inclusive' holidays at several hotels in the town a lot of these restaurants have closed and I fear many others will follow. We will still return to this lovely town and use self catering accommodation and help support these wonderful restaurants and businesses.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Lots of sunshine, friendly people

Lovely village - good restaurants and bars

Gouves is not a large village, spread along the coast and a little way inland. Restaurants tend to be traditional greek and although we ate out each night, we didn't have one poor meal - all were very good. There are a couple of smaller beaches - one contained within a harbour wall which protects the beach (and swimmers!) from the sea since it can be quite rough... the larger beach (at the western end of the town) was exposed BUT not so rough that you couldn't get in and our 2 children (who are decent swimmers) both enjoyed the waves! Generally the food and drinks were a little expensive BUT I believe this is Greece in general not just Gouves - Mythos was around 3 or 3.5 euros but a Strongbow was 4 - 6Euros... The food was a great standard and we had the greek plate in a few different restaurants. It was enough food with a greek salad for myself and my husband to share....so was excellent value. Most restaurants had childrens menus OR would do smaller portions of any items on the menu for children. Atlantis Restaurant was particularaly good... but as we've said we didn't have any bad meals. We did visit the restaurant at the front of our accomodation (xilinhos) and whilst the food was good it was very pricey.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Very quiet and expensive

Plenty of bars, but none of them busy or with any atmosphere. Beach was clean although not always suitable for young children due to rocks in some places.

Not 18-30 but not family friendly

Strong currents on one beach, not particularly clean on the alternative. Lacks any real charm or interest for exploring.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The marine life centre - a few kilometres away and not too expensive. Well worth the visit. Also Milena restaurant by the sea: great food every time.
