Georgioupolis Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Georgioupolis

With a beautiful beach of rolling soft sand and eucalyptus trees sprinkled generously through the village, Georgioupolis holidays have all the ingredients of the perfect Cretan getaway. An attractive little place with a backdrop of imposing mountains, Georgioupolis lies between Rethymnon and Chania on this enchanting Greek island. An idyllic spot for a fun family holiday or a romantic break, accommodation in Georgioupolis is made up of self-catering apartments and smart villas right up to luxurious 5 star hotels. There really is something for everyone.

Where to stay

Georgioupolis Beach

The majority of the hotels, apartments and villas here in Georgioupolis are centred round the stunning main resort beach. It’s a huge draw for tourists with its gently shelving shoreline and azure sea. Spreading out east from the village centre, the beach is flanked by traditional Greek tavernas offering delicious freshly cooked cuisine and wonderfully cool drinks after a hard day’s sunbathing. Where the river meets the sea it’s shallow for a very long way, so is perfect for young families.

Offering a handful of small self-catering apartments and traditionally rustic style villas, the quaint village of Kournas can be found just a 10-minute drive from the centre of Georgioupolis. Peaceful and unspoilt, it’s well known for its tsikoudia distillation and there’s a couple of beautiful tavernas along the main road too. This aniseed-flavoured unsweetened alcoholic drink is unique to Crete, so what better place to sample it first-hand.

What to see

If total relaxation is what holidays are all about for you, then the beach will certainly not disappoint. With its sunbeds and umbrellas for hire plus a good range of watersports, there’s plenty going on for all ages. But if you fancy getting out and about then a trip to Lake Kournas is well worth it. Just five minutes’ drive from Georgioupolis it’s a completely breath-taking place to spend an afternoon and is one of only a handful of freshwater lakes on the whole island. The lake is home to a variety of terrapins and some even say there are eels here too. With a small selection of shops and tavernas, it’s an incredibly pretty spot indeed.

Georgioupolis comes alive at night for anyone who loves to have fun after dark. The main central square is lined with busy bars and tavernas offering all sorts of entertainment from late night discos to traditional Greek dancing and more. Whether your idea of heaven is sipping a cocktail or two in a chilled out lounge bar or downing the pints in a bustling nightclub, there’s plenty of choice in Georgioupolis.

What to eat

Apart from the square, there are numerous cafes and restaurants along the beach road of Georgioupoli, where you can easily while the way the hours over a glass of Metaxa or Ouzo and some delicious lunch. Traditional lamb kebabs and Cretan salad are the order of the day, served with a soft cheese or feta and with a good helping of Paximathia (a type of hard Greek bread). Depending on the tavern, additions to this dish can include egg, zucchini, potato and at least two whole tomatoes too. But for a taste of home there are a number of restaurants selling British favourites as well as Chinese and Italian fare if you prefer.

Shops of all kinds can be found in the main square of the village as well as through the surrounding streets. There’s also a couple of pharmacies, a bank, a larger supermarket, lots of souvenir shops and a number of mini markets for all the essentials. Additionally, bike and car rentals can be found here for the more adventurous.

Quiet & Relaxing resort

Still retains some Cretan character; great beaches and friendly locals. There is night life if you look hard enough and become a regular at your favorite taverna, but Georgioupolis' strenghts are during daylight hours

The best thing about my stay was ...

Easy access to Chania and the White Mountains and with great beaches
