Alykanas Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Alykanas

Ideal for families, solo travellers and couples alike, Alykanas is a very popular resort lying on the north-east coast of Zante (Zakynthos) about 18 kilometres from the capital port at Zakynthos Town. It’s made up of three sun-kissed crescent-shaped bays, enchanting whitewashed houses and friendly locals who treat you as one of their own. Offering all the amenities you would expect, Alykanas hasn’t lost its rustic charm and traditional Greek appeal.

The area offers a broad variety of accommodation, with everything from low cost self-catering apartments to mid-range half board and all inclusive hotels to luxury villas. Alykanas itself boasts a kilometre-long bay of soft sand and wonderfully clean, clear water.

Where to stay

Old Alykanas

Old Alykanas can be found 2km east of the main resort of Alykanas. It's relatively easy to walk here from Alykanas or Alykes and is simply a case of following the small roads around the coast. Home to a stunning golden sandy beach, this quiet little spot is perfect for couples and families looking to relax and get away from it all. In terms of accommodation, there’s a number of self-catering apartments and boutique hotels here, as well as some private villas. The beach is calm and safe, perfect for little ones, with tap water clear sea. Although there are no watersports, there are plenty of sun beds to hire for a lazy afternoon.

Alykanas Beach

For some people, a holiday is all about getting off the treadmill and chilling out in the sun; for others it's about discovering new places, trying new delicacies and integrating into a new culture.

Stays at Alykanas Beach mean you can enjoy both. The beautiful beachfront offers breath-taking views whilst more adventurous explorers can experience the surrounding quaint little Greek villages or take a boat trip to the ruins of the famous smuggler's ship. Most accommodation here is either right on the beach front or very close to it and is made up of various self-catering apartments, villas and hotels. There are also some shops and supermarkets here selling everything from traditional ceramic pots, handmade souvenirs and bottles of Ouzo to snacks, toiletries and bread.

What to see

The beach at Alykanas is a truly family affair. Its immaculate sand shelves gently into the turquoise sea, making it ideal for non-swimmers. There’s also some slides and swings alongside the snack bars on the beach, so kids can run around and burn off energy while you enjoy a delicious lunch.

If you feel like getting out and about, take the Trainaki train excursion to fully appreciate Zante’s laid back pace of life. You’ll get taken through winding old villages and terraced olive groves, stopping off at the Vergagio Museum of Folk Art at Pigdakia and the Vertzagias caves. Then finish off with a glass of local Zante wine before heading back to the town. The train departs each day in summer from Alykanas station at 10.45 in the morning.

Alykanas is more about family fun than booming nightlife, but come the evening there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. The town has its fair share of locally run bars for drinks and nibbles with some even including a swimming pool and free snooker tables. For something a bit livelier, many bars hold themed Greek nights with bouzouki music, lots of Ouzo and traditional dancing too.

What to eat

There are all sorts of beautiful Greek tavernas and delicious restaurants to choose from in Alykanas to suit all budgets and tastes. While you’re here, don’t forget to the family-run taverna “Memories”, famous for serving up wholesome Greek fare. It’s also next door to a cake shop called “Sweet Memories” offering a range of scrumptious desserts. Give the grilled feta starter a try, before tucking into delightful mains like beef in stamna or pork in red wine cooked in an authentic clay pot. Then wash everything down with some free wine straight from the family’s vineyard.

There’s only a few shops and supermarkets in Alykanas so not too many opportunities to flex your credit card. However, if you’re looking to take home a bottle of delicious virgin olive oil or some holiday nik-naks, head to the main street with shops just behind the beach. For some more serious retail therapy, take the bus from Alykanas town centre to Zante Town where there’s a much bigger variety to choose from.

The beach at Alikanas is gorgeous. The town is not for the club loving people.. but Jamming bar is awesome... had a few good nights in there thanks to spiros! The shops are ok, but you would have to travel to the bigger city centres to get more variety. We hired quads.. if you like that sort of thing then its excellent to travel around on one of those and there very reasonable in price aswell. Will be booking up for next year that's for sure

Alikanas on Zakynthos, lovely quiet, friendly resort

Love Alikanas. Suffering a little from the financial problems in Greece, places closing down but the people are lovely and friendly. Beach clean, sea clean and warm.
