Agia Pelagia is a seaside fishing village built in the centre of a picturesque amphitheatric bay, is located 23 km northwest from Heraklion, capital city of the Island of Crete, and distants 25 km from the airport of Heraklion and 23 from the ferry port. Worth visiting is the nearby cave, with the name "Evresi", where - according to legend - local people found the icon of Agia Pelagia (Saint Marina). In the village you can find many taverns, offering traditional but also international dishes, bars, cafes, shops and boutiques, which will invite you to exciting short walks through the little streets. Surrounded by mountains and hills, Agia Pelagia lies right in the middle of Crete (which makes it easy to be used as a base for tours and excursions around Crete Island). Near Agia Pelagia you will find some interesting places to visit, like the Minoan Palace of Knossos, the archeological Museum of Heraklion, the traditional villages of Achlada, Fodele and Anogia up to the highest mountain of Crete "Psiloritis" (2.456m high).

Small but bustling resort with great beaches

The resort is small but busy with a great selection of bars and tavernas along the main sandy beach front. No road here just a footpath between the nightlife and the beach. Lots of people on the beach at all times, even swimming right into the night. Many nationalities on holiday here and popular with Greeks especially at the weekend. 3 other coves within walking distance which are worth the walk up and down some steep hills to get to them. Great for snorkling, fishing and watersports. There are also some lovely little shops to buy leather goods, handbags, sunglasses, perfume, purses and gifts.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The selection of sheltered coves

Agia Pelagia - great for relaxing, couples, families (if you are with friends, its fine, but you will want to also explore other cities)

I would say that Agia Pelagia, although blessed with breathtaking views and seems to be away from the party resorts such as Malia, it it most suited for young couples. It is also ok for older couples, but they have to be prepared to walk up and down hills (the beach is at the bottom of a steep hill). Th beach in Agia Pelagia is nice too, with lovely views. They are plentiful places to eat traditional greek food (lots of seafood choices) and there seems to be one places, like a bar or club with a DJ. Not too busy though... but good for the younger solo, group or couple travelers! If you fancy a rally good night out (mainly for singles), go to Room 109 and Envy in Heraklion. Me and my two girlfriends had an absolute blast there and we found the places looking very chic, modern... just super. Prices for drinks though arent far behind the UK prices.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Views, beach front with shops and restaurants

Pretty bay,nice beach,lots of restaurants

For beach based,do nothing holiday this resort is great. Beach gets very busy as it is close to Heraklion and local folk come by at weekends. There are no boats or water taxis so if you don't have a car you may feel a bit restricted. Good dive centre offering all levels. Would be difficult to self cater adequately based on supermarket contents but lots of nice reasonable restaurants. Stony section before you hit soft sand in the water so take water shoes if you find this tricky.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Nice clean beach, pretty bay, plentyof restaurants, close to airport

Unknown, looked busy tho for village

Too busy enjoying our one week break that we never actually got to Agia Pelagia! We did travel through it on way back to airport and that is one of my reasons to want to travel back at a later stage, when we have more time to visit the area more.
