A brilliant destination for a beach holiday, Hurghada is located on the west side of the Red Sea Riviera in Egypt. Once a small fishing village, it has undergone huge amounts of development in the past decade. Now it’s a bustling resort city attracting thousands of visitors every year. Hurghada is famous for its spectacular coral reefs and crystal clear, warm waters which are ideal for diving.

A wealth of activities

A lot of hotels here are all-inclusive and packed with so much to do you’ll never need to leave, but for those who want to venture further afield, there’s plenty to do. For a traditional atmosphere head to the bazaar at El Dahar, the old town. The marina is home to some fabulous fine dining spots, and after dark the city comes alive with numerous pubs, Bedouin bars and discos playing music late into the night. For something a bit different, you can take part in an exciting jeep safari in the Eastern Arabian Desert.

Snorkelling on Giftun Island

Only a 45 minute boat ride from Hurghada’s port is Giftun Island, a beautiful desert island paradise. It’s home to a national park and is the perfect spot for snorkelling, with clear waters rich with colourful fish and aquatic life. There’s also the chance to swim with dolphins, an experience not to be missed!

Things to do in Hurghada

On the beach in Hurghada

Hurghada’s beaches are perfect for watersports of all kinds, but are especially famous for diving. Some of the world’s best scuba diving and snorkelling spots are located just off-shore. The water temperature is around 27c in summer and 20c in winter, and you’ll get a crystal clear view of the coral reefs teeming with wildlife.

Top Tip:

It’s worth paying for access to one of the resort beaches as these are higher quality than the public beach.

Eat and drink in Hurghada

Even if you’re staying all-inclusive, you’ll be missing out if you don’t venture out for at least one meal in Hurghada. The marina is a hot spot for eating out – every restaurant here is a fine dining establishment, with such a variety of international venues that there’s something to suit all tastes.

Top Tip:

Unlicensed restaurants are often happy for you to bring your own beer and wine – just ask.

Hurghada nightlife

There’s a great selection of bars and discos close to the beach, including the only beachside Ministry of Sound venue and several Bedouin bars where you can enjoy alcoholic drinks, coffee and local Shisha. Lots of hotels in Hurghada have their own excellent bars so you won’t need to venture far for a good night.

Top Tip:

When taking a taxi to or from a nightclub, it’s a good idea to agree on a price before you set off, or else you could be in for an unpleasant surprise!

Shopping in Hurghada

For great souvenir shopping, head to Hurghada’s old town – El Dahar. Here you’ll find a traditional Egyptian bazaar packed with stalls, many selling authentic goods at low prices, while some goods are not so authentic! Either way it’s a great place to buy presents for family and friends back home.

Top Tip:

Don’t be afraid to haggle for a good deal – in fact it’s expected here.

Things to see in Hurghada

For something a little different, you can take part in an exciting jeep tour in the Eastern Arabian Desert. It’s around a half hour drive from the centre of Hurghada and you’ll get to ride camels, drive a sand buggy and visit a traditional Bedouin camp. What’s more, at the end of the day there’s a BBQ and the opportunity to star-gaze for a true desert experience.

Top Tip:

The jeep ride over the dunes is fast and bumpy, so not for the faint-hearted or anyone with a bad back!

We Recommend

Moby Dick

This steakhouse on Sheraton Road has a delicious menu and a comfortable atmosphere with cosy booths to eat in. It’s a good idea to get there early as some of the more popular dishes, such as their famous camel steak, have been known to sell out by 8pm.

Papas Beach Club

Pool, private beach and restaurant by day, lively party venue by night. Papas is famous for its good music, and there’s a variety of it too. Keep an eye out for pool parties and free entry on certain days of the week.

Lively, plenty to do, good facilities

There is something for everyone in Hurghada, night life, pleasant walks or just sit and watch the boats on the Red Sea, marina, restaurants, shops and usual fast food outlets. Stay in a hotel out of town if you prefer to be quieter or in town for all the facilities. Good hotels with everything you need for a lovely holiday. A city that caters for all tastes.

Fantastic without Russians

Fantastic. Well maintained beach area, staff supurb- nothing too much trouble. Entertainement 1st Class. What more can I say other than we would not go back if Russians were there. They treated staff dreadfully and we would not want to experience that again.

Hurghada

Had stayed in Hurghada for a few days September 2010. Was quite surprised at how much it has grown since then, new buildings everywhere. A beautiful place with something for everyone, sunshine, beaches, shopping, discos, just a very special place for me.

more than just diving

Stayed in Downtown and wandered the souks, ate in small restaurants and enjoyed the Egyptian feel. However saw large luxury hotel complexes, nightclubs, bars etc, joined in excursions quadbiking, camel riding snorkelling etc. Enjoyed shopping and brought home beautiful scarves and trinkets. Hurghada seems to have something for everyone whist remaining quite relaxed.

The best thing about my stay was ...

sunshine! And camel steak in Kanaria restaurant Dahar.

Hurghada :)

We went to Hurghada. We found it very dirty and confusing. But you can really make some good bargains :) We bought some very nice clothes at a shop called "habiba" at a very good price and good quality. We preferred shopping at the Cleopatra Shopping Center close to Ali Baba Palace.

Busy, plenty of bars, cafes, and shops

The area we stayed in was the main part of the city, plenty of shops, banks, cafes and fast food outlets. You get a better exchange rate for English Pounds over there than you do in the UK, on average 9 Egyptian to the pound as opposed to the 8 Egyptian we got in the uk.

Some restaurants but not much activity

It's a bit shabby really. If you go to Hurghada it is because you are in an all-inclusive hotel. The town is messy, busy, full of tat shops and you get hassled

Unfinished resort

Less character than Sharm. New Marina is nice but quite small. Vast number of shops selling very similar souvenirs. Similar to the Costas 20 years ago. Lots of unfinished buildings so you end up going from bright lights through dark streets to get to the next set of bright lights.
