Paphos Overview

Old meets new in this romantic harbour town located on the southwest coast of Cyprus. Said to be the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite, Old Paphos is steeped in tradition and fascinating mythology. Here, there are plenty of cobbled streets to explore and little Cypriot cafes in which to while away the afternoon. New Paphos is the modern city, where you’ll find the white-sand beach and trendy harbour filled with bars and restaurants. It’s also home to a selection of UNESCO World Heritage sights. So whether you’re a sun-worshipper, an explorer or a history lover, there’s something for everyone here.

Blue Flag beach

The beach is on the small side at 150 metres long, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in location. It’s just a stone’s throw from the town centre and is overlooked by a medieval fort, allowing for some great views as you sunbathe.  The beach is split into two strips – one with sand and one with wooden decking – and both have plenty of sunbeds.

Temples and tombs

Paphos is packed with temples and interesting ruins, many of them relating to the goddess Aphrodite. On the way to the harbour you’ll find Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, a UNESCO site featuring ancient Roman architecture, fortresses, villas and mosaics. And outside the northern walls of Paphos town are the Tombs of the Kings, a remarkable underground necropolis dating back to the 4th century BC.

Take a day trip

There are plenty of secluded mountain villages less than an hour’s drive away, where you’ll find pretty lanes and churches, as well as authentic Cypriot restaurants and bakeries. If you’re a beach lover, Coral Bay is one of the best in the area and can be reached in 10 minutes’ drive from Paphos. 40 minutes on are the Baths of Aphrodite in Polis, as well as a great walking trail.

Things to do in Paphos

On the Beach in Paphos

Paphos is surrounded by stunning turquoise waters, and if you head a little out of town there are plenty more beautiful sandy beaches to choose from. Many have their own wave breakers, making them ideal if you have kids who want to swim and paddle. Water sports are also widely available.

Top Tip:

The sea can get a little choppy depending on the weather. While this is great for certain water sports, make sure you stay safe while swimming.

Eat and drink in Paphos

Paphos is known for its delicious local cuisine, from Halloumi cheese to Sheftalia sausages to succulent kleftiko, you’ll find something to fall in love with. For a true taste of Cyprus, head to restaurants with meze on the menu. And of course, the harbour is home to some of the best (albeit the priciest!) seafood restaurants in town.

Top Tip:

We recommend accompanying any traditional Cyprian dish with wine from the Nelion Winery.

Paphos Nightlife

The city may be bursting with history, but the nightlife is right with the times. For a good night out head to Bar Street, which is just off the harbour. After dark it’s all lit up in neon, and there’s everything from stylish cocktail bars to themed pubs and karaoke nights to choose from. Later on, crowds of revellers head to thousand-capacity clubs in the city centre and enjoy all the latest trance, dance and club tunes.

Top Tip:

The venues on Bar Street tend to be open all year round, and lots of bars have live music most nights.

Shopping in Paphos

Many Brits enjoy the sense of the familiar that Paphos offers, from driving on the left to instantly recognisable shop fronts such as Debenhams. For local products such as Lefkara lace and silver handicrafts, there are plenty of independent shops along the harbour and a covered market every weekend in the old town.

Top Tip:

Some shops are closed Wednesday after 14:00 as well as all day Sunday.

Things to see in Paphos

The Tombs of the Kings – a series of caves and catacombs carved out of solid rock – are a must-see for the ghostly atmosphere and fascinating history. ‘Tombs of the Kings’ is something of a misnomer, as the tombs served as a last resting place for the local nobility rather than for royalty. They were looted a long time ago for their jewellery and other artefacts, but the sense of stillness and mystery remains among the looming columns and frescoed walls.

Top Tip:

For the best experience we suggest visiting early in the morning, but the tombs are open daily until 5pm.

We Recommend

Seven St Georges Tavern

There’s no menu at this Cypriot fusion restaurant – the chefs cook what is fresh on the day and will keep the dishes coming until you tell them to stop! It’s well worth a visit for the homemade Cypriot dishes, including meat and fish meze, cooked with a twist and all from organic local produce.

Lighthouse Beach Bar

This waterfront bar is the ideal place to chill out day and night with a gentle sea breeze. In the evening there’s no better spot to watch the sunset and enjoy a light meal and a glass of wine or beer.

Paphos Aphrodite Festival

Held in the first week of September every year, this culturally rich festival involves a wide variety of events. These include a visit by a famous opera troupe to perform at Medieval Castle Square – not to be missed if you’re in town this autumn.

This was our first time in Paphos and I was very impressed. Great shops - lots of fake bags, sunglasses, jewellery etc - not particularly cheap but much better quality than you would get in Spain. Paphos town very clean and quite peaceful during the day. Don't know about the nightlife as we stayed in the hotel at night - but we drove through it one night about 8.30 and it seemed to be buzzy and lively. Lovely water park about 10 mins drive from the town - not too huge so doesn't take ages to get round, queues seem to move really quick so not a lot of waiting around and some great water slides and loads of free sunbeds - definately worth a visit. really close to the airport - only a 15 min drive

Friendly, with lots of places of interest

Clive Payne, Belper

Good bus service into Paphos. The harbour has lots of shops and restaurants to sit and watch the world go by. There are lots of archaeological sites to visit. If you feel a little more adventurous you can hire a car, driving on the left being an advantage if you are from the UK. We braved it into the Troodos mountains to the Kykkos Monastery, well worth the visit, but not for the faint hearted if driving yourself. If you like walking the Akamas is an area of natural beauty with many trails to explore, and only 30km from Paphos. Also the Baths of Aphrodite can be found there. You will need a good map of Paphos if you are Going to explore.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Its friendly relaxed atmosphere and of course the sunshine

Beautiful City very clean near to the beach

Con mac parthalain, Corcaigh?Cork Éire/Ireland

A really beautiful City lots to do plenty of "No hassle" car hire The harbour area is just wonderful with lots of shops and boat hire both cruises or even hire a speedboat yourself. There is a large supermarket right in the middle of the shopping area that offers practically everything from food to clothes etc. The area is particularly clean litter free and plenty of bins to dispose of waste. There are many archalogical sites than can be visited within easy reach "The tombs of the Kings" is one "Aphrodities baths"etc. One should visit Coral Bay just 12 klms from the town center you can catch a bus (615) it only costs one euro and the beach is the best in Cyprus. I went there in the winter (Dec) and it was a wopping 26c cool at night though If you want a good holiday with pleanty of good sunshine then Paphos is the place to be.

Great place to visit

G Henderson, Essex

We stayed at this hotel in February 2011 for the children’s half term holiday. my party included adults age 30 & 27 and children aged 6 & 1. We got this half board package very cheap through alpha rooms and wasn’t expecting the quality that we received. We arranged our own flights and got a taxi transfer from Pafos airport for 30euros. The hotel is beautiful, the reception staff were very helpful and polite and went out of their way to assist us when enquiring about outings and places to visit. the hotel room was on the third floor, we wasn’t expecting it to be of the quality it was, the facilities in the room were of a high standard, hair dryer, fridge, mini bar, shampoo & shower gel dispenser, hand soap dispenser, kettle with facilities to make coffee/tea. The cleaners were fab, changed the towels we left on the floor for fresh ones. our holiday highlight was the restaurant, the staff were very professional wearing matching suits, even though it was buffet style they made an effort and were very friendly. The food was amazing!!!!! Every night was a theme, I have to rate the food better than any other country/hotel I have ever been to! Each night the selections could have made 10/12 different meals from what was available. The desserts were immense! The biggest selection of cakes, gateaux, rice puddings, crème caramel, yogurt, ice creams and fresh fruit. The breakfast was just as good if not better; I must mention the fresh pancakes that are cooked for you there and then along with your choice of omelette. Drinks can be paid for each night or added to your room bill which we found convenient. Even though their wasn’t many children the kids club was open and was fab, our son actually cried when we had to leave! The indoor pool and Jacuzzi were good for the not so sunny weather and we did use the outdoor pool once. The amount of sun beds and loungers available is good, they lead right up to the beach, there’s a direct path to the beach from the hotel so you can sit literally seconds away from it and enjoy the view of the pool and beach. The facilities for us around the hotel were good, internet terminals, rent a car desk, hair dressers, massage & beauty treatment room, mini shop / groceries and many places to sit, unwind and relax. I would definitely return to this hotel and will visit some of their others due to how this one was (Louis group). I bet it is lovely in the summer and if they can provide such high service and a good ratio of staff in Feb. then they can only provide more in summer. There is a animal park near by which was good, water park even closer & the harbour is lovely and is only a small walk up the beach here they have boat excursions, many cafes & food spots as well as Pafos castle which for a very small price you can go into and explore. Very happy family..:-)))

The best thing about my stay was ...

Friendliness of everyone / locals
