Located in southern Cyprus, Larnaca has a claim to being the oldest city on the island, although its glitzy hotel-lined stretch of coast might make you think otherwise. You’ll find plenty of top quality Blue Flag beaches here, with Finikoudes Beach being the most well-known. Like lots of Cypriot coastal towns though, the history can be found closer to Larnaca’s centre.

Explore on foot

Despite being the third largest city in Cyprus, most of Larnaca is easily walkable, and the Promenade makes for an especially pleasant evening stroll. Those looking to dine outside the hotel will be delighted with Larnaca’s selection of restaurants, bars and tavernas, particularly those on McKenzie Beach. For shopaholics, the city is home to a brilliant range of independent shops and boutiques, many specialising in silver jewellery. For the best nightlife, the main “strip” on Larnaca-Dhekelia Road is the place to go.

Camels and flamingos galore

There’s no shortage of things to do away from the beach too. You can take part in camel rides at the Camel Park, visit the spectacular Saint Lazarus Church in the city centre, and enjoy winter flamingo-watching at Larnaca Salt Lake. Only a short drive out from Larnaca you’ll also find the charming village of Lefkara. It’s known for its handmade lace and silverware, and makes a great choice for an afternoon trip.

Things to do in Larnaca

On the beach in Larnaca

Lined with huge palm trees, Finikoudes Beach is one of the most famous Blue Flag beaches in Cyprus. The wide stretch of shallows, calm waters and fine sand make it perfect for families with young children.

Top Tip:

Many restaurants on Finikoudes Beach are open late, so it’s a great place for a romantic after-dark meal.

Eat and drink in Larnaca

For some of the best seafood in the city, head to McKenzie Beach. It’s packed with fish restaurants and tavernas. Many of these cater specifically to tourists, but it’s worth walking until you find one filled with Cypriots – you’re sure to find the tastiest seafood here.

Top Tip:

McKenzie Beach is next to the airport runway, so you can watch the planes taking off and landing. Remember that it isn’t Heathrow so this is more of a relaxing pastime than an annoyance!

Larnaca Nightlife

While Larnaca’s beach bars are definitely worth a visit, the glamorous Larnaca-Dhekelia strip is the place to be for high-quality bars and nightclubs. It can be found about a 15 minute drive east of the city centre, and draws in tourists and locals alike for the non-stop party vibe.

Top Tip:

Cabbies are legally obliged to pay attention to the meter, but a few don’t – so take care when travelling by taxi.

Shopping in Larnaca

Larnaca is well-known for its jewellery and silverware, and just off Ermes Street you’ll find loads of independent jewellers and craftsmen. There’s also plenty of lace and pottery. We recommend Oro Fino Jewellery for its fantastic selection of high-quality pieces.

Top Tip:

For a unique gift, many jewellers are happy to accept requests for custom pieces.

Things to see in Larnaca

The peaceful Larnaca Salt Lake is a sight not to be missed, especially in the winter months. This is when the basin fills with water and attracts enormous flocks of pink flamingos, among other wildlife. It’s still worth a visit in summer for the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque, a majestic sight in itself.

Top Tip:

Go there in time for sunset for some stunning photography opportunities.

We Recommend

To Kazani

This cosy family-run restaurant has the look and feel of a traditional Cypriot tavern. Portion sizes are so generous you might have to take some home with you, and the meze comes especially highly recommended.

Ammos Beach Bar

Young, hip crowds flock to this all-in-one bar, restaurant and nightclub for its infectious party atmosphere. The food is great too – for something a bit different, try their famous grilled octopus.

August Village Festivals

Of course there are bigger, grander festivals in Cyprus, but for a more intimate and authentic experience, most villages near Larnaca have their own summer festivals throughout the month of August. Expect lots of food and local wine, live music and traditional dancing.

Lively, always something to do and the food....oh the food!

Fabulous city, with sandy beaches and a vibrant night life, not much sightseeing to be done, if thats what your after but for sun sea and sand with lots of culture cyprus is the place to be. There are several waterparks we went to the ayia napa one which was a great day out! Ayia Napa is only 20-30 mins away by car or there is a bus from the city centre which can take you. Ayia Napa has a great night life! Larnaca itself is very family friendly, the promenade has a nice beach and Mckenzie beach is also very nice! restaurants I would recommend are Oceans Basket for fish....Alexander is a lovely cafe with all sort of food the service is great and they always offer you a coffee or ice cream on the house! There are lost of restaurants in Larnaca and many are of an excellent price! I recommend you try the meze which is lots of small dishes, a bit like the spanish equivalent to tapas, although the greek version you will never beable to finish and if you do order this make sure you order less i.e if there are 4 of you order for 3 because its just a waste of food! I love Larnaca its my favourite cypriot city

Larnaca is a small town. It does not have the hustle and bustle of loud holiday destinations which is perfect for families with children. It has bars, restaurants etc, so always something to do and Larnaca has a lot of history.

Beautiful, historical and modern

Larnaca is a very old fishing town and has everything you need, from the old to the modern. It has excellent markets in winedy roads and some very old fahioned products. It genuinely has everything you need.

Palm Beach Hotel Area

We only stayed at the hotel location. The surrounding area is very pleasant with good bus services into Larnaca. There were still a good selection of shops and restaurants open for December. The best thing is the nice beach walks to other hotels close by. The least best thing is that there could be better street lighting in the area at night.

The best thing about my stay was ...

We didn't venture into Larnaca this time but on previous visits we found Larnaca to offer a good variety of shops that were not too expensive.

Traffic, hard to park

After our many experiences of Cyprus southern coast line towns in summer, don't expect an easy time with a car. Park in back streets and walk to sea front, restaurants and promenade. Alternatively drive to restaurants on eastern coast line towards the Eastern Sovereign Base Area - a good guide like Time Out or the Rough Guide is what we use to locate eateries.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Keep away in the summer

flying visit

We only went into Larnaca for one morning, but thought the beach looked very nice. There were many shops, bars and restaurants for those who look for these in a holiday, but as we only visited once I could not really give a proper review.
