Ayia Napa Overview

Party in paradise

Located in the Mediterranean Sea on the South Eastern coast of Cyprus, Ayia Napa is a famous party resort in an area steeped in divisive history. Golden beaches stretch for miles along the Ayia Napa coastline and with temperatures as high as 32°C in summer, it’s clear why the resort is loved by sunbathers and swimmers alike.

I Heart Ayia Napa

On one side of an iconic stone sign for the Instagram generation, Seferis Square regularly attracts party-animals to its booming bar and club scene. On the other side is the medieval Ayia Napa Monastery, presenting a 500 year religious history. Around these attractions are a number of popular restaurants, culminating in the once small but now prospering fishing harbour, where sightseer boat trips depart daily.

Famagusta region

The larger towns of Protaras and Paralimni are only a 20 minute bus ride away and host a variety of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops for the more savvy shoppers. Hop-on, hop-off bus tours can take you even further - the ‘ghost resort’ Varosha, where time has stood still since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 is a must visit.

Things to do in Ayia Napa

Sunbathe on one of the 14 Blue Flag beaches

With a number of pristine white-golden, sandy beaches along the coast, you can take your pick of well-presented seashore. Whether searching for a hidden gem (Konnos Bay), an archaeologist’s dream by the ancient tombs (Makronissos Beach) or a happening tourist spot (Nissi Beach), Ayia Napa caters for all.

Top Tip:

Remember to bring your snorkelling gear, as there’s plenty of small sea life in the shallow waters here.

Seafood, want food, eat food

A plethora of restaurants are situated along Nissi Avenue and serve worldwide international cuisine to suit even the most fussy of eaters. But for a more traditional Cypriot experience, take a stroll to the harbour.  Daily fresh delicacies such as octopus stifado and fish meze can be eaten throughout the day whilst you look out at the bobbing boats.

Top Tip:

Some restaurants have the novelty of letting you dip your feet in the cool water while you eat, so make sure you don’t mind your shoes getting wet!

Clubbers delight

With over 100 bars and clubs on offer, it is clear to see why Ayia Napa has been a night-owls’ haven for the last 20 years. The party starts at the main square behind the monastery, where the long-established Club Black N White can be found and still attracts celebrity guests and DJs such as Rio Ferdinand and Tim Westwood.

Top Tip:

Some club events can sell out quickly, so be sure to pre-book the most important tickets to avoid disappointment.

Boutiques and bazaars

Ayia Napa offers a diverse shopping experience with cool designer fashion outlets sitting happily alongside quaint souvenir shops. Locally made organic soaps, olive oils and traditional Baklava treats fill these shelves, but bargain hunters should also check out Ayia Thekla market once a week for hand-made goods and second-hand treasures.

Top Tip:

All-day bus tickets are a snip, so get one on Wednesday and peruse the market in Ayia Thekla in the morning before heading to the designer shops in Ayia Napa centre.

Sail the ocean blue

Ahoy! If you have ever felt like becoming a scurvy dog of the seven seas, the Black Pearl Cruise is a great way of testing the water. Family-friendly, the pirate entertainers will keep the kids amused on deck whilst the adults watch or merely enjoy looking out to sea whilst sipping a cocktail. With swimming stops and hearty meal included, it’s a great day out for all ages.

Top Tip:

Remember to put on sun cream at regular intervals – the cool breeze and sea spray on the ship can make you forget about the heat of the sun!

We Recommend

En-yevo Tavernaki

For an authentic Cypriot dining experience, head to En-yevo Tavernaki. The reasonably priced food is locally sourced and freshly prepared daily, with the friendly staff always willing to give their recommendations for the dish of the day. Popular dishes such as kleftiko, sea bream and chicken souvlaki come highly recommended.

Tommy’s Pub

On the corner of Nissi Avenue, Tommy’s Pub is one of the busiest in the area thanks to its nightly live entertainment, happy hour cocktail deals and large projector screens for both sports-fanatics and karaoke queens. Be sure to get there early for a seat.

Ayia Napa Festival

On the last week of September, the local residents of Ayia Napa and neighbouring towns gather together to showcase their rich and varied cultural history and traditions to tourists. From folk dancing to halloumi making to wood carving; the hosts will provide enlightening entertainment for all in Seferis Square.
