The bustling resort of Playa del Ingles had developed in the shadows of the dunes of Maspalomas and stretches north to San Agustin. The purpose built centre continues to develop and has merged with the resort of Maspalomas to form a significant tourist centre.

The Paseo Costa Canaria runs the length of this busy resort. The beach is busy and popular with families enjoying the perfect conditions. There are cafes and snack bars along the length of the resort. Playa del Ingles has a vibrant resort centre day and night. There are several local markets each week and the nearby Plaza Maspalomas is a great place for designer boutiques. Head to the Kasbah Centre for late night fun and entertainment.

Holiday hotspot

Playa del Ingles is a well-developed holiday resort on the southern coast of Gran Canaria. Sandwiched between the smaller resorts of Maspalomas and San Agustin, Playa del Ingles is a real holiday hotspot. The resort is popular with families seeking active beach holidays but the lively gay scene also attracts visitors looking for late nights in the Playa del Ingles bars and clubs.

Active beach life

The large beach is perfect for long lazy days soaking up the year round sunshine. More active visitors can scuba dive and wind surf. If you head down the beach towards Maspalomas you will be faced by the impressive sand dunes that line the coast. The area is a protected nature reserve but you can cross on foot or by camel. The area is dotted with snack bars and cafes as well as places to shower the sea and sand away.

Shopping and waterparks

The resort offers the best in both day time and all night entertainment. There are several significant commercial centres plus the boutique lined Plaza Maspalomas for some retail therapy. You will also find weekly markets offering the best local produce as well as jewellery and leather goods. If you want to get out and about on your Playa del Ingles holiday you should visit the waterpark in Maspalomas and certainly take time for a trip north to the impressive volcanic formation of Roque Nublo.

Things to do in Playa del Ingles

On the beach in Playa del Ingles

The beach runs from San Agustin in the north where the sand is quite a narrow slip down to the resort of Maspalomas in the south where the beach expands to become a deep, fun filled paradise. There are several breakwaters lining the coast which help to provide a really safe environment for families with toddlers hoping to paddle. The Paseo Costa Canaria runs the length of the beach and is a good link between the resort and the beach.

Top Tip:

Head further south towards Maspalomas and the dunes if you want a bit more space on the beach.

Eat and drink in Playa del Ingles

The resort centre is full of places to eat and drink both day and night. The large commercial centres, Yumbo and Kasbah offer a wide range of places to eat from basic snack bars to restaurants serving international cuisine. You will also find an interesting range of restaurants down on the Calle las Dunas all with terraces overlooking the beach.

Top Tip:

For a more authentic dining experience consider a short taxi to San Fernando. There are some great local restaurants serving up real Canarian specialities.

Playa del Ingles nightlife

Playa del Ingles is a loud and lively resort after dark. The lively gay scene tends to centre on the Yumbo centre. By day Yumbo is a great place to pick up gifts and souvenirs. Once the sun goes down the centre fills with late night revellers. The Kasbah is very similar with an inner circle full of bars and late night clubs. There are several large clubs including Pacha and Cream.

Shopping in Playa del Ingles

The good news for any holidaying shopaholics is that Playa del Ingles is packed with commercial centres. Yumbo and Kasbah may be the most popular night-time destinations but there are other great venues for a spot of gift or souvenir shopping. The Tropical Commercial Centre is on Calle de Madrid, just behind the impressive beach. The convenient location, range of shops and lovely little restaurant make this a great one stop shop.

Top Tip:

Look out for the market in Maspalomas every Wednesday and Saturday. It is a short taxi ride and runs between 9am and 2pm.

Things to see in Playa del Ingles

The sand dunes of Maspalomas are the most obvious attraction and very hard to ignore. The dunes lie to the west of Play del Ingles and stretch back and across the southern tip of the island. There is easy access and they are an incredible sight up close.

Top Tip:

Rather than walking across the dunes, take a camel trek. It’s a great way to explore the towering dunes.

We Recommend

Eiffel Bar

This bar is consistently awarded a 5 star rating with Tripadvisor users. The cocktails are top notch and the friendly, attentive service helps make this bar stand out from other bars in this popular commercial centre. Worth a visit.

Restaurante Calma Chicha - Avenida de Tirajana

This popular restaurant serves up local specialities in a nice tranquil setting towards the dunes of Maspalomas. The shady terrace is a great place to sit back and watch the world go by. Calma Chica specialises in local caught fish dishes and grilled meat. Look out for the beautifully indulgent puddings.

Carnival – March/April

Carnival is a big event across the Canary Island. In Gran Canaria the party is spread across the island with most resorts, towns and cities getting involved. You can expect music, parades, dancing, food and drink galore. The event runs up to Ash Wednesday. Playa del Ingles typically adds an extra weekend of fun and frolics so make the most of it.

Playa Del Ingles has one of the best nightlife in Europe

Playa del Ingles has sunshine all year round, and the warmest during winter months in Europe. There is accommodation to suit all budgets and numerous good restaurants all over the place. Shopping is great too. Alcohol is very cheap.. drinks are never measured as singles or double.. they just pour into the glass to half full of spirit.. more like a triple or more!!

The best thing about my stay was ...

Yumbo centre nightlife

Tacky, cheap, hot, fun get away destination.

The town has zero cultural significance although 10 minutes drive north and you're in beautiful hills / mountains with great views and amazing towns and villages. The beaches are also fantastic although very busy.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Great for a week or so of fun and sand!!

Lively, very commercial large resort

Large mainly flat resort easy to walk around but beach is down a hill or down steps. Plenty of shops, bars, restaurants clubs. Good taxi service. Good promenade. No history or tradition. Very commercial tourist resort.

Lively place

Always something to do, a lot of restaurants from cheap to luxus. Good shoping in the shopping centers, and better shopping in San Fernando, where you also can eat at places and be the only tourist. We like Yumbo best in evenings, Kashbah/Plaza have a lot of "inthrowers" they just wont leave you alone. Buses goes in all directions, so its easy to come around on the island. Cheap drinks and lot of happy hour offers.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Something to do even if its a rainy day.
