Matagorda Holidays & Hotels

If you’re looking for a Lanzarote holiday that is a little different, Matagorda has a unique character all of its own.

With incredible beaches, amazing amenities and lots of bars and restaurants to explore, Matagorda definitely offers a quieter alternative to its neighbouring resorts. If you want to avoid this hustle and bustle, but still want to be within travelling distance to all of the action, Matagorda may be the place for you. Lively, Puerto del Carmen is no more than five minutes away.

Hotels In Matagorda

With just a 5-minute transfer time from the airport, this location is perfect for those that want to send the minimum amount of time getting to their accommodation. When you do arrive, there are many high-quality hotels and cheaper apartments, boasting scenic views and plenty of entertainment.

Where to Say

Matagorda Beach

For those looking to stay close to all of the action, there are plenty of hotels, villas and apartments located in the popular Matagorda beach area. With a wide range of water sports of offer, this particular area is popular with holidaymakers that have an adventurous side and a love for water. Bars and restaurants line the waterfront, providing you with plenty of options to eat out if you’re on a self-catering plan.

Los Pocillos

Just a short walk from Maragorda beach is the area of Los Pocillos. Another popular beach in the Matagorda area, there are plenty of eateries and bars for you to enjoy during your holiday. With Lanzarote Zoo and Playa Park just a short walk away, this particular area is popular among families with small children.

What to see

In a quiet resort, holiday life in Matagorda inevitably revolves around the beach. Luckily for holidaymakers, the beach is so large it can accommodate hundreds of sunbathers, without ever feeling overcrowded or busy. Along the seafront promenade, there are plenty of bars, shops and restaurants to enjoy after a day at the beach. If you like walking, there are paths that take you to either Puerto del Carmen or Arrecife, depending on which direction you walk in.

If you prefer to cycle, there are dedicated cycle lanes and plenty of bike hire places that make it easy to get in the saddle and explore Lanzarote’s stunning south coastline. The promenade runs all the way from Puerto del Carmen, through Matagorda, and on to the capital, Arrecife. There is also a handy pink brick section especially for cyclists. The ride is 11-kilometre in total, with lots of tapas bars and restaurants for you to explore along the way. After all, that’s how the Spanish intended it.

If you’re looking for a more action-packed break, Matagorda beach is perfect for water sports. With a watersports centre in the main town square, you will be able to find a mix of banana boat rides, jet-skiing, parasailing and group windsurfing lessons on offer. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even book yourself some scuba diving lessons. If water sports aren’t your bag, there are plenty of places along the beach where you can watch everyone trying their hand at a new hobby.

For those that love to take an excursion or two during their holiday, Lanzarote’s Timanfaya National Park is nearby. Home to a mountain range of dramatic volcanoes, this incredible National Park is a must-see for anyone visiting the island. With just a 30-minute drive from Matagorda, there are lots of different tours you can take to explore this incredible Mars-like landscape. The tours will give you a chance to see inside the craters, ending at a Manrique-designed restaurant where they cook your meat from the heat of the underground lava. If that doesn’t say adventurous, we don’t know what does.

Nightlife

Although Matagorda is not widely known for its nightlife, The Commercial Centre is home to a range of bars and restaurants that have a lively atmosphere each night. Those who are in search more serious nightlife will find much more choice if they walk or take a taxi into Puerto del Carmen.

What to eat

Whilst it may be quiet in most aspects, Matagorda certainly isn’t lacking when it comes to delicious restaurants, most of which are based in and around the town square. With a mix of traditional Canarian food and establishments specialising in grilled meat and fish dishes, there’s something to meet everyone’s tastes.

Shopping

As a quiet and up and coming resort, the shopping facilities in Matagorda are relatively sparse in relation to the neighbouring neighbourhood, Puerto del Carmen. For those staying on a self-catering basis, there is a Spar supermarket located in the Commercial Centre. Nearby Los Pocillos also has a large supermarket, but it is a little bit further away.

Home from home...

I fell in love with Lanzarote seven year's ago and nowhere else really compare's to it. A beautiful clean island, the local's are friendly, laid-back & very helpful. Almost everything is reasonably priced from taxi's to food. I have nothing negative what so ever to say about the place!

The best thing about my stay was ...

Everything!!!

Matagorda is lovely - perfect for a quiet escape!

Matagorda is small but lovely! It's quiet but it's got everything a family would need. The beach is beautiful, long, golden and sandy...the prominade runs for miles and is flat, well kept, and spotless clean - ideal for an evening walk, jog or run. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes - anything from quick snacks to pastas, pizzas, steaks, seafood and lots more. There isn't a huge array of discobars so it's not "young and lively" - but it's perfect for a quiet relaxing holiday with less hussle and bussle. You can even walk to the top of the runway at Lanzarote airport and see the planes as the come in to land - kids would find this amazing. Our family loved it here.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The long sandy beach, gorgeous sunny weather, and long spotless prominade.

fab beach beside hotel, lovely walks plenty to do and see

Matagorda is an ideal family destination, only 10 mins approx from airport, plenty of lovely restaurents. Visit the sportsmans bar is recommended, plenty of screens to catch up on any sports event while on hols but also a very welcoming bar tender who is very knowledgeable about area. Lpvely shopping area for souviners only a short stroll in any direction. Yet you can be in the center of pota del Carmen in about 6 mins by taxi for a very cheap fare or walk at an easy pace and get there in about 30mins browsing in the various shops enroute.

The best thing about my stay was ...

No hills to walk and proximity to beach, shops etc and airport

Fabulous, convenient and just right for a relaxing break.

Matagora is set between the airport and Puerto del Carmen. It is a small urbanization but has a neat shopping area with two supermarkets and loads of different restaurants and bars, without being too commercial. It is busy but not crowded and has all the amenities we want as an older couple. There is, however, plenty for the kids and a lovely sandy beach. I would recommend it more strongly but don't want too many people to go there and spoil it!!

The best thing about my stay was ...

Peaceful, quiet but not dead.

Close to the airport

We have stayed in different hotels here 4 times and we love the proximity to the airport. €8 in a cab and your at your hotel in under 10 minutes. There are a few shops around and its a nice stroll to Los Pocolos. If your feeling fitter its about 35 mins walk to Puerto Del Carmen. No traffic allowed on the promenade so its great for walkers and pushchairs etc.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Easy access to Airport and busier resorts
