Los Cristianos Overview

Los Cristianos sits on the southern coast, with a beautiful harbour separating it from Playa de las Americas to the west. The resort is still the busiest port on the south coast of Tenerife. The two beaches really define this laid back resort. The Los Cristianos beach is a great family beach, nicely sheltered from the wind and choppier waters by the harbour. The Las Vistas beach is man-made and is something of a mecca for watersports enthusiasts.
The recently upgraded promenade behind the beaches is the real centre of the modern tourist resort of Los Cristianos. The elegant cafes, bars and restaurants cater for all tastes both day and night. Los Cristianos does not attempt to rival the late night revelry on offer in Playa de las Americas. Instead, you can expect a nice relaxed atmosphere with long lazy dinners and cocktails the order of the day.

From fishing to ferries

The little fishing village of Los Cristianos has grown up into a popular, sophisticated holiday resort on the south west coast of Tenerife. Alongside Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje, the resort forms a large tourist conurbation that stretches along the coast for approximately 6 miles. The modern resort centre is built around the bustling sea port which is home to ferries, excursion boats and working fishing boats.

Atmospheric old town

The atmospheric old town really makes Los Cristianos stand out. Stretching up from the port the little winding streets, ancient church and pleasant little squares are full of both visitors and locals, giving the resort a really authentic feel. There are also two beautiful beaches in Los Cristianos. East of the modern port is the well sheltered Playa de los Cristianos. West is the more the open, sprawling Playa de las Vistas complete with the lovely Paseo las Vistas, perfect for early morning and late night strolls.

Things to do in Los Cristianos

On the beach in Los Cristianos

The Playa de los Cristianos sits alongside the busy Puerto de los Cristianos. The beach benefits from the expanse of harbour wall which provides plenty of shelter making the beach perfect for families with small children. If ship watching is your favourite pastime you will love this beach! There are regular arrivals and departures ranging from large cruise ships to ferries heading across to La Gomera and back. On top of this, the resort is still a working fishing port. You will see small fishing boats and trawlers landing their daily catch on the harbour side. The larger Playa de las Vistas is backed by a lively promenade, busy day and night with visitors enjoying the many cafes, bars and restaurants in the area.

Eat and drink in Los Cristianos

Take your pick! The promenade, Paseo las Vistas, is lined with places to eat and drink throughout the day. The area around the harbour and up through the narrow streets of the old town is also popular with both locals and holidaymakers. The centre of the resort is heavily pedestrianised and very easy to get around. Enjoy an early evening stroll and a drink somewhere before deciding what to eat. The area surrounding Plaza Pedro García Cabrera has some lovely restaurants with terraces overlooking the beach of Las Vistas.

Los Cristianos nightlife

Los Cristianos offers a good range of lively nightlife from karaoke bars and cocktails to late night clubs. There are great little bars all over the resort centre but the San Telmo Commercial Centre is a hub for late night fun. The street is lined with places to eat, drink and be merry with superb views over the Playa de las Vistas beyond. Obviously, for those seeking a wilder night, Playa de las Americas is a short taxi away.

Shopping in Los Cristianos

Unlike other resorts in this part of Tenerife, Los Cristianos does have some a great range of authentic local stores. The area around Avenida de Suecia is packed with both practical stores selling everyday goods and smaller boutiques. The weekly Sunday market is also a great way to not only pick up some souvenirs but to also sample some of the amazing local produce on offer. The market is held in the area next to the Gran Arona Hotel.

Things to see in Los Cristianos

The island of Gomera lies off the coast of Tenerife. Take a ferry across to the capital city, San Sebastian. An organised tour will lead you through the island giving you the chance to explore the amazing Garajonary National Park which covers approximately one third of the small island. This remote island has a proud history and was once a stopping off point for Christopher Columbus.

El Pincho

This tapas bar has pride of place overlooking the Playa de las Vistas. The atmosphere is great with really attentive and friendly staff. The food is the real star of the show with excellent tapas platters to share. Throw in a cold glass of beer or wine and you have the perfect venue. Prices are reasonable too.

The Claddagh Irish Bar

This ever popular Irish bar is within the San Telmo Commercial Centre and has a great terrace overlooking the Playa de las Vistas. You can expect live music most nights and the Guinness is good.

Gran Fiesta de los Vinos – July

This large scale wine and tapas tasting event takes place near the harbour and brings over 50 of Tenerife’s wine producers tougher in one place. It is a wonderful opportunity to sample the islands finest food and wine with expert input.
