Cute city

Pros: 1 - Very nice and lively city offering a variety of activities. 2 - Las Canteras beach is amazing (lots of waves if you like that kind of water). 3 - The historical part of the city (Vegueta) is only 15 minutes away by bus. 4 - Great bus system, almost every spot is connected to the other (direct bus to maspalomas which takes about 1 hour only, buy the cheap weekend ticket on sundays for 6.50 euros). 5 - Very nice seaside promenade. 6 - There was an excellent italian restaurant offering pizza/pasta around the telepizza restaurant (unfortunately we dont remember its name.) Cons: 1 - Learn basic spanish phrases before going there, english is NOT popular. Communication was a bit difficult in general. 2 - Weather swaps very swiftly from sunny to cloudy/windy (we were there in mid April). In that case, we simply took a bus to the south where it was still sunny. 3 - Signs and directions inside the LPA airport were stupidly designed. We kept running around and being mislead by the signs. 4 - Tarjetas Insular (costs 15 euros and provides discounts on buses) was not available anymore!!! since we took the bus quite often, this ticket could have saved a lot for us. In contrast to teneriffe, which still offers a discounted bus ticket saving upto 50% on bus rides longer than 20 km.

City is flexible for travel around the island and sunbathing

Beautiful long clean beach with good facilities - one end excellent for surfers, mid and other end excellent for sunbathers and swimmers. I didn't see much of the city but the beach area was perfect for facilities, restaurants etc. The travel system was clean, punctual and reasonably priced.

Good for couples, who like walking and sightseeing.

Las Palmas can be lively and you need to pick carefully were you are going to stay. We did not find it expensive and restaurants on the beach front were very reasonable. Drinks in small bars were 1.80 euros for a large beer and 1.60 euros for a glass of wine wine. Las Palmas can be lively and as quite as you want it to be.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Good for shopping , sunbathing and restaurants.

Lively city

Lively city with plenty to offer if you take the time to look! The opera house situated at the far end of the promenade is well worth a look. Good value for money in bars and restaurants! There are plenty to choose from! Beautiful coast line, snorkels and swimsuits are a must, there are plenty of hidden gems inches from the shore! The tour bus is a good way to get round, at 17euros for a 24 hr ticket its well worth it.

The best thing about my stay was ...

That there are few places /people that speak English! Brilliant!

A "big" city with all you need.

Very close to the Canteras beach. Many restaurants along the beach and near by who offered food from different places, and to a good price. Many shops ; el corte Ingles, Marks and Spensers etc., many Centro Comerciales. And the best of all you could take your time in the shops without beeing disturbed of the staff, like in the south. Hairdressers everywhere, and very cheap. The best place we visited was the Old Town, with museums, beautiful houses and the big shoppingstreet Trijana.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Easy to find what you were looking for, very friendly and helpfull people.

An interesting city, providing much more stimulation than the beaches in the south

Surprised to find it was so big. Good public transport, which is necessary if you're staying in the north of the city near the gorgeous Las Canteras beach and want to visit the older parts of Triana and Vertuga. Possible to explore by foot though if you have time and want to discover some of the wonderful local cafes and restaurants. Also great to be have access to all the island's main bus routes, making it easy to get to the beaches of the south, the mountains in the middle and the old towns in the north.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Feels very spanish and great to explore by foot if you have time

Las Palmas-Gran Canaria

Las Palmas is what one would expect from a city with shopping centres, traffic at busy times. Las Canteras beach is the best thing about it as it's a pedestrianised 3km stretch of sandy beach where people stroll, jog or have a drink or a meal. It's never too rough as the reef stops all the big waves though the part nearer the Kraus centre seems to be a bit more popular with surfers. Most of the city consists of big blocks of flats but there are some nice squares and a pretty little old part. There is also a small pedestrianised shopping area and a few shopping centres with all the major chains and cinemas. It's a good place for those looking for a good beach but also want to get a flavour of local life in a small city.

Just so not like Playa del Ingles

Good selection of restaurants. Nice beach. Lively Spanish city with plenty to see. Easy access to the rest of the island on the buses .. though the timetables can be a nightmare to understand and the schedules not well thought out for use by hikers.

Loved the old town

Our favourite visit was to the old town - a United Nations World Heritage Site. The modern art gallery - behind a very old front door - was well worth a visit. Plenty of places to eat out. However there were a lot of empty shops and unfinished buildings which lent a semi derelict air to some parts of the town. The traffic was manic so we didn't hire car but used the efficient and cheap local bus service to get about. Las Canteras beach and promenade were first class.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The old town and the beach.
