La Gomera Reviews

lovely little island
G shelford, Windsor
Firstly this is a quiet island it is nothing like the bigger island, its landscape is just stunning the people friendly, i mean i have never been in a bar, had a bar owner jump in his car drive to his mate who makes wine then come back and give us a bottle for free, now that is friendly! It is of the tourist radar and thats what made it so good, not many locals speak english and i dont speak spanish, but with a phrase book and the friendlyness of the people we got on fine. This would not suit those who like big resorts full of english bars but if you want to get away from it all this is a lovely place to visit. We had 4 days here then 6 in Tenerife, so a mixture of quiet and not so quiet, which worked out nicely for us. Go and try it out even if only for 2 days but you do need to hire a car.
The best thing about my stay was ...
people, food, the island.

Beautiful, stunning scenery.

A lovely little island. Absolutely stunning scenery to rival anything we have seen in the world - some of the ravines are like mini Grand Canyons and the rock formations rival anything we have seen in the USA. All very low key - if you want loads of bars, clubs and razzamatazz then La Gomera is not for you. Defintiely worth hiring a car and getting off the beaten track. Roads are generally extremely quiet and apart from the endless hairpin bends, driving is actually a pleasure! Also don't miss a boat trip to either whale watch or simply see the island from the water. Great walking country too but try to avoid mid day - it can get very hot. The are some great walks which take you through the Laurel forests which look like something out of Jurassic Park, and provide welcome shade.

Dramatically beautiful, unspoilt and peaceful
Val Sparks, Cambridge
Lots of walks for all levels of ability and good choice of guided trips/excursions. Lovely beach at the Puerto and good tapas & drinks at Tambara (with great views over the ocean); Charco del Conde is a charming area of apartments and shops overlooking a small bay with views of the dramatic waves breaking over rocks. at La Puntilla is a very popular restaurant serving arabian inspired food. At La Playa you can enjoy watching musical entertainment from the 'hippies'; Casa Maria offers good simple canarian dishes; the Pianobar in the Gomera Lounge served good drinks/cocktails while listening to talented pianists.
The best thing about my stay was ...
Wonderful scenery and climate; an island unspoilt by mass tourism with warm local people
