El Cotillo Overview

El Cotillo
Untouched by mass tourism, the harbour town of El Cotillo retains the simple charm of the real Fuerteventura. There are only a moderate number of hotels to choose from, helping to ensure that the village is never choked with tourists, and that the many restaurants have remained to the most part true to traditional cooking.
Who should go?
With few bars or shops, and in a secluded location requiring the use of a car to reach, El Cotillo is a poor choice for a family holiday. As a relaxing and unspoilt location for quiet couples, or for those seeking a great place to windsurf, this small village and its charming beaches is ideal.
alpharooms.com suggests
Swimmers would be well advised to stay within the lagoons at El Cotillo, as there can be powerful tides and currents making open-sea swimming very dangerous. The lighthouses and 18th century castle, the Fortaleza del Toston, which look down on the harbour and village make great destinations for short walks and to get a feel for El Cotillo's history as a smuggling village.

peaceful place

A beautiful peaceful place, with 2 lovely beaches. El Cotillo is perfect, for people, who want a relaxing holiday, with no noisy bars, restaurants and nightclubs around. The two beaches are very popular among normal board surfers and kite surfers.

The best thing about my stay was ...

It`s peaceful

Quaint and quiet

El Cotillo is a beautiful little fishing village - really quiet and unspoilt although I fear that may change if too many buildings go up, a couple on the holiday said that there were a lot of new buildings from when they were last there a few years ago.

The best thing about my stay was ...

the beaches

Rugged charm - spectacular beaches, but scruffy interior

El Cotillo is a rugged working village that offers the tourist excellent harbour-front restaurants and spectacular beaches and sea-scapes. Accommodation is mainly SC apartments with only one obvious all-in hotel. Perhaps a victim of its own success, much of the resort interior remains left as unsightly "plots", seemingly awaiting further development, halted by the current economic down-turn. Not a "Brit-orientated" resort (No Sky Sports / Happy Hour / FE Breakfasts etc.) ... but having spent the previous week in Caletta de Fuste, the peaceful contrast - and undoubted improvement in local food quality - was welcome. Sea water quality (for snorkelling) was disappointing ... mainly due to accrual of large deposits of weed on the shoreline ... plus the inevitable wave action on fine sand.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Excellent food overlooking the old harbour ... and the beaches.

SLEEPY UNSPOLIT SPANISH VILLAGE

VERY QUIET SLEEPY VILLAGE WHICH IS VERY SLOWLY (MAKE THAT VERY VERY) HAVING ANY DERELICT BUILDINGS (AND VACANT PLOTS) RENOVATED/DEVELOPED. THERE ARE ABOUT A DOZEN INDIVIDUAL RESTAURANTS WHICH CATER FOR ALL NEEDS (IF YOU NEED A CHANGE FROM THE HOTEL). THERE ARE ALSO A FEW SHOPS AND ONE REASONABLY SIZED SUPERMARKET) WHERE YOU CAN GET ANYTHING YOU MAY NEED WHILE YOU ARE THERE. THE 'OLD HARBOUR' PART IS LOVELY WITH SIX RESTAURANTS/BARS + AN 'ENGLISH BAR' (IF YOU REALLY NEED IT). THE NEW HARBOUR AREA HAS A COUPLE OF SHOPS AND ABOUT FIVE RESTAURANTS/BARS. THE NORTHEN SIDE OF THE VILLAGE (WHERE THE HOTEL IS) HAS THE 'LAGGON' BEACHES WHILST THE SOUTHERN SIDE HAS THE LONGER (MORE OPEN) SURFING BEACES. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN IN JULY OR AUGUST AND WE UNDERSTAND THAT IT CAN BE MUCH BUSIER IN THOSE COUPLE OF MONTHS.

The best thing about my stay was ...

STILL RELATIVELY UNSPOLIT PEACE AND QUIET

Quiet spot far from the maddening crowd

Quiet little village, at least in November, with none of the large apartment blocks or the major hotel open(thankfully) El Cotillo is about 50 minutes drive from the airport any very easy to reach by car. The beaches are great with a good variety for surfers and swimmers. Definitely a great place to stay for a quiet time. Horse riding also available at El Roque about 2 km away. The recession (or maybe it was just off season) seems to have been a problem for many of the restaurants and shops are closed - but that suited us as we are allergic to shopping anyway.

The best thing about my stay was ...

location, beaches, sunsets and very friendly people.

Great for a short break in the sun

Lots of places to eat and drink, lively and friendly, a few shops. Sadly the recession has hit the island badly and El Cotillo was no exception. There are loads of homes and businesses for sale. The laguna beaches are great.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The local people and the wonderful weather.

Unspoilt town ....

Town is now sadly rather tired with a lot of empty shops. Shop around when eating out as, like so many places, the best gems are hidden and if you choose a place with a view you pay dearly for it. The coast is stunning and worth making the trip.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The stunning unspoilt beaches and coves

Quiet, quiet, quiet

Great beaches, a few good restaurants. Very quiet day and night. A pity the recession has left lots of empty apartment blocks, shops etc in the village. Feels very safe. If you want basic peace and quiet with lovely beaches, this is the place. Only 40 mins from the airport. Good for couples and young families but little or nothing to do in the evenings.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Great beaches, peace and quiet
