A great centre to explore Lanzarote from

Nice town with a traditional Spanish feel. The seafront has some pretty gardens and a quiet sheltered beach (no public facilities though, you need to be staying quite close). The charco (inland lake) is very picturesque and has quiet cafes used mainly by locals. If you stay here without transport you can visit most other parts of the island (and all the main resorts) by bus. Buses start from, or stop at, a small bus station close to the sea front. Bars and cafes are lively in the evening but there is little noise or traffic on the streets after midnight, it's quite a relaxing place to stay. The Castillo de San Jose has a good collection of Modern Art housed in spectacular surroundings.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Saturday morning market, with traditional music bands

Arrecife is not a holiday resort.

Have been going to Lanzarote on & off over the last 25 years. Arrecife is small & "quaint". It is NOT a shopping destination; it has no big stores just quaint old shops with a few clothes boutiques. It is being modernised, slowly, but alot of the old character is going with this modernisation as they are not preserving all of the old facades. There is a very small market once a week but it is mainly tourist items for sale. The beach however is fantastic & is always packed on sunny days with locals. It is not a big beach but you can always find a place. There are rocks which is great for the children to go "hunting" & it is a safe beach with a shallow start & protective walls. Apart from the shops & the beach there is nothing else in Arrecife but they are planning to build a fancy concert hall which should bring another aspect to the capital town.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The beach & the Alta restaurant in the Grand hotel.

As a resort - no so good!

Arrecife has changed over the years and is continuing in its endeavour to become more tourist friendly - it is far more attractive than it used to be but still doesn't offer alot. I personally would go to Arrecife to stay in my hotel, sunbathe, eat prawns in garlic and have a mojitio.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The beach and The Gran Hotel

We chose to stay in Arecife at the beginning of our holiday so as we could save money on less popular, cheaper flights from UK. It is about 10 mins by bus from airport which costs next to nothing (1.2 Euros each). There's enough to see for a day or two but probably wouldn't stay much longer. Could use as base to travel around as has good public transport links.

Seemed lively

Difficult to review as only stayed one night in business district and therefore out of tourist area. Seemed quiet at night however we then found plenty of bars and restaurants the next day by walking further along seafront so may have been lively enough. Close to airport which was our main priority, just 10 nEuro in taxi.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Cose to airport for onward travel.
