Golden Sands Holidays & Hotels
Hotels in Golden Sands
One of Bulgaria’s premier seaside resort towns, Golden Sands offers up exactly what it says on the tin: golden beaches, sparkling blue water and a relaxing holiday experience for the whole family. The resort sits on Bulgaria’s beautiful Black Sea Coast just a 20-minute drive north of Varna, a historic city that’s home to a myriad of museums and Roman ruins.
Golden Sands accommodation runs the gamut from family friendly mid-budget resorts to luxury 5* hotels and chic 4* boutiques. Most of the hotels can be found just a short walk from the beaches, making it easy to make the most of the sunny weather during your stay.
Where to stay
Just a 30-minute drive from Varna airport, Golden Sands is one of the most easily accessible beach resort areas for visitors to Bulgaria. Its vast swath of coastline is lined with resorts, shops and restaurants, ensuring a lively holiday for friends and families. Beaches are usually filled with tiki parasols, sunbeds and massage stalls, making it the ultimate spot for socialising as well as relaxing.
Many of the Golden Sands resorts provide a full experience for guests, complete with all-inclusive facilities, on-site entertainment and outdoor swimming pools. Some even have extras such as a spa or casino, providing multiple ways for guests to kick back and relax. If you’re looking for a little more flexibility during your stay, then that’s no problem either - the majority of the resorts offer self-catering facilities too.
What to see
Unsurprisingly, the beaches are the main draw of Golden Sands. Whether you want to sunbathe, chill down in the ocean or take on some adrenaline-fuelled water sports, it’s all possible here. Multiple boat trips take visitors on a serene tour along the coastline and out to sea, while centres welcome kids and adults into the world of diving. Take a course, head out for a snorkel or dive, and experience life in Golden Sands below sea level!
Away from the coast, there’s plenty to keep the whole family amused. Aquapolis is a family-friendly amusement park that’s got everything from slides to pools and a lazy river. Separate kids and adults’ areas allow people of all ages to get their water park fix. Elsewhere, Golden Sands Nature Park is just a 5-minute drive from the coast. Although it’s the smallest Nature Park in Bulgaria, it provides multiple hiking and biking trails. There’s also the opportunity to catch sight of local wildlife and plants, as well as to soak up the views at lookout points.
The Nature Park is also home to the rock monastery Aladzha Monastery. For a small entrance fee you can take a look around the monastery, built into the rock face and inhabited by hermit monks in the 11th century. The park also features the remains of a basilica and medieval fortress.
Whatever your idea of a perfect night out is, Golden Sands more than rises to the occasion. As well as beachfront bars, vibrant nightclubs and chic cocktail bars, a handful of resorts also keep the party going with all-day pool events - during the peak summer season there are foam parties and live DJ sets to keep you partying right through until dawn. For even more nightlife choices, head to nearby Varna. There are English pubs, cosy lounges and even more nightclubs.
What to eat
A delicious mix of classic Eastern European and Mediterranean dishes, Bulgarian cuisine in Golden Sands is particularly varied. Mealtime is a big occasion in Bulgaria, with locals reveling in the opportunity to eat with family, friends and visitors. Banitza is a popular pastry that you’ll find at cafes and bakeries all over the area - it’s made by stacking up layers of filo pastry dough before adding butter and traditional Bulgarian cheese. Meat eaters will be in their element with a Meshana Skara; a mixed grill that features a range of pork meats, stakes and classic kebapche - a kebab that’s sprinkled with various herbs and spices. When it comes to desserts, be sure to try tikvenik, a dessert made with sweet pumpkin and walnuts.
Shopping opportunities in Golden Sands are plentiful, especially if you’re after souvenirs and kitschy gifts. You won’t have to look too far to find a market stall or souvenir shop selling the usual range of souvenirs. For something a little different, head along to Kiwi Market, where stalls have a colourful mix of fruit, replica clothes and handbags, and more. If it’s big brand stores you’re after, take a short drive over to Grand Mall in Varna. As well as a huge range of local and international shops, the shopping centre is also home to a food court, a bowling alley and a cinema.
