Hotels in Barbados

Home to luxurious beach resorts as well as cheaper holiday apartments, Barbados has the perfect accommodation for your trip, whether that be with friends, family or a loved one. Many of the hotels are based around the edge of the island, allowing you prime access to the white beaches and picturesque ocean.

With daytime temperatures rarely dropping below 20°C, Barbados offers an exotic break all year round. It’s also a country that’s easy to get to grips with, with it possible to drive from the top of the island to the very bottom in under an hour. Whether you’re after a cultural trip around the island or just want to soak up the idyllic beaches, your holiday will certainly be one to remember.

Where to stay

Bridgetown

As the capital of Barbados, Bridgetown is a place that most people will visit at least once on their holiday to the island. It’s alive with the hustle and bustle of authentic Bajan spirit, and it’s where you’ll find a lot of the big tourist attractions, including Mount Gay Rum Distillery. Most of the hotels sit alongside Bridgetown’s coast, but there are a few more affordable guest houses further inland.

South Coast

The South Coast is one of the most popular areas to stay, benefitting from luscious beaches plus a short transfer time from the airport. Accommodation options are plentiful, with mid-range apartments and large-scale resorts all sitting close together. You won’t be short of things to do, either, as this part of the island is one of the most developed areas; it’s got countless eateries, as well as supermarkets and spas.

West Coast

Nicknamed the ‘Platinum Coast’, this corner of Barbados oozes exclusivity and glamour. The 5* beachfront hotels cater for the most sophisticated of holidaymakers and provide a peaceful stay away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas. In amongst these hotels, though, are a handful of mid-range guesthouses and inns, giving a budget-friendly alternative to experiencing real Barbados luxury.

What to see

The idyllic white sandy beaches attract thousands of holidaymakers to Barbados every year. You’ll be overwhelmed with places to park your sunlounger, but Carlisle Bay and Browne’s Beach in Bridgetown are two of the most popular amongst locals and tourists alike for their picture-perfect views. Action-seekers will love the fact that there are so many opportunities for diving dotted around the island, too - sessions take divers of all experiences on tours around shipwrecks and the local marine life. Expect to see wildlife as varied as barracuda, moray eels and nurse sharks.

If you manage to tear yourself away from the beaches, there’s plenty of other tourist attractions ready to explore. There’s Harrison’s Cave, a subterranean world that’s accessible via tram, and St. Nicholas Abbey, which is a 17th century sugar plantation where you can enjoy samples from the on-site rum distillery.

Nightlife

Ranging from low-key beachfront shacks to VIP nightclubs, there’s always a party to be found in Barbados. Saint Lawrence Gap to the south of the island is always a great place to start your evening, with multiple bars and nightclubs minutes away from each other. To the north of the island, First Street Holetown has a mixture of evening entertainment including stylish bars, lively bars and restaurants, and rooftop eateries.

What to eat

Unsurprisingly, fish makes up much of the island’s most popular dishes. Flying fish is one of Barbados’ national dishes, and can be enjoyed either fried, steamed, baked or pickled. Pair with some local seasoning, spicy gravy or vegetables. No visit to Barbados is complete without trying macaroni pie, made without a pie crust using macaroni pasta, cheese and different spices. The dish can be enjoyed either hot or cold, making it the perfect meal no matter how hot the weather is during your holiday!

Shopping

Barbados offers a range of duty-free shopping opportunities across the island, helping you pick up more souvenirs and gifts for less! There’s everything from authentic Bajan shops to luxury designer boutiques, allowing you to pick up a range of one-of-a-kind items for your house and your wardrobe. Pelican Village in Bridgetown is a shopping village that sells a range of authentic arts and crafts, while at Medford Craft World you can pick up hand-crafted mahogany pieces from local artist Reggie Medford. Meanwhile, Bridgetown is home to a number of department stores, shopping centres and general souvenir shops, catering for all needs and budgets.
