Madrid

Madrid
The capital and largest city in Spain, Madrid has a fascinating history, unique culture and vibrant nightlife. Summers in Madrid are hot, with temperatures regularly above 30 degrees making the city a perfect getaway from the UK’s inevitable damp and grey version.

Where to visit….
The Prado Museum houses one of the world’s best collections of European Art. It includes work by Spanish painters; Velazquez, Goya, El Greco and Esteban as well as many other big names from other European countries. Another arty essential is the Reina Sofia Museum, Spain’s national museum of 20th century art featuring work by Picasso, Miro and Dali.
Designed by architect Gomez de Mora, the Plaza Mayor is a beautiful square that has been the site of many a bullfight and execution. Today it is surrounded by shops and bars and features a statue of King Phillip III. The Royal Palace has one of the largest armouries in the world and celebrates the change of the Royal Guard every Wednesday at 11am which is well worth a watch.
If you’re after some space, head out to the Buen Retiro Park at the edge of the city centre. Full of sculpture, monuments, lakes and manicured lawns, the park is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. If you have the kids with you and want to escape the heat in the city, head out to Aquopolis, a large outdoor water park full of slides and pools. Other child-friendly options include the Planetarium, Warner Bros Park and the Zoo Aquarium. Real Madrid FC was founded in 1902 and is Spain’s most successful football team. Their home is the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium where if you’re lucky with your timing you can catch a game.

Shopping!
El Rastro, Europe’s largest outdoor market, is the place to shop on a Sunday morning. You can buy almost anything here on the streets of Barrio La Latina. Xanadu is a shopping centre for the whole family. Containing Europe’s largest indoor ski slope, the multi-level shopping and sports centre offers something for everyone and most importantly during the hot summer months – an air conditioned haven.

See the city…
The Teleferico (cable railway) is a great way to see Madrid – from the air! A tour lasts 11 minutes and offers views of the Rosaleda, the Principe Pio (train station), River Manzanares and Casa de Campo. Walking is the best way to see the city but if your feet begin to tire, hop on to the expanding Madrid Metro, 24 hour buses (perfect for partygoers) and plenty of taxis.

After dark….
Madrid has vibrant nightlife and a wealth of choices to suit any taste. If you’re wanting to celebrity spot, Gabana 1800 is where you’ll find your professional footballers and models alongside an equally exclusive price tag. A lively young crowd can always be found at Fortuny, a restaurant and nightclub housed in a three storey 19th century palace. Kapital is a huge nightclub that spans 7 floors and a rooftop terrace. Here you can dance the night away to Madrid’s local DJ’s.

review florida norte madrid spain

Hotel was very central located Just 10 minutes walk to city-centre. Room for 3 persons was ok. Check-in en out was very quick. The hotel was rather quit, we asked for a quit room and got a room not in front of the street.

okay ...

that's what I would say about this hotel. Rooms are okay, not the best. Breakfast was significantly below what I expected concerning choice and quality.

puzzled by poor reviews

We stayed here for 5 nights and were wary after reading the reviews. I have stayed in many salubrious hotels throughout the world - yet thought that his was excellent in regards value for money. even if we had paid twice the £35 per night each it would stil have been good value. The hotel is somewhat dated - but not as much as some say. Our room 158 on lower floor had, apart fromthe bathroom, been renovated and was pretty modern - certainly not a 70s throwback. The hotel generally was immaculately clean - could not have been cleaner. Regarding the numerous comments about the staff's 'bad attitude' i soon worked this out. Simply Madrid is a very very conservative city where old fashioned values are still respected. I have been numerous times and compared to say Barcelona it is a different world regarding culture. Service is formal and just because you don't get lots of false cheesy smiles everywhere - don't interpret this is 'bad service' Its just as service should really be - formal and sincere. Combine this with the lack of English in Madrid compared to the costas etc (where many guests may have made their comparisons with) then its not surprising that communication can be interpreted as strained. My response to people is....learn some Spanish - after all it is 'their country' I speak pretty well and it goes a long way - it also gets you free and discounted drinks and food too in many bars!!

This was an ideal location for visiting madrid. Our party of 8 had a great time, and the hotel could not do anymore for us. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and will try to get back again next year

Correct Hotel for tourists

We stayed 4 nights in a rather spacious room with a view to the Royal Palace and its Gardens. There was no smell after smoke - which is often a problem in Spain or Italy. Textiles and furniture very simple but clean and comfortable. Excellent location for pedestrians or local traffic users. Restaurant forgettable, staff not bed -not very kind: correct. Room-Safe has daily fee, internet use against phone-card which is expensive.

Just what we wanted!

Great location just across from the train/metro. Madrid is very easily accessible from here, we were back and forth into the centre a couple of times each day - found the Metro very straight forward even when rather drunk! Hotel was great, no complaints at all, staff on reception were very helpful despite the fact we don't speak a word of Spanish between us! We decided not to have the breakfast, not because of the reviews on here though, just thought it was too expensive (we like our food cheap). Would recommend this hotel to any family or friends if they head to Madrid - I would stay here again if I ever return!

Lovely Hotel - So Convenient

We stayed in this hotel for two nights - a large family in two rooms. The location was great. We got the metro from the airport (€2 each) and when we emerged from the Principe Pio Metro station the hotel was right in front of us. Principe Pio station has a large shopping mall with lots of shops and restuarants. Madrid is easily accessible by metro (€1 per journey). The Hotel itself was clean and comfortable and although the decor in the rooms may have been in need of a change it was still a pleasant hotel. The breakfast (with extremely runny scrambled eggs and watered down orange juice) was a little lacking in fresh fruit or yogurt however, the selection of breads, cheese, ham, etc., were sufficient. The staff were friendly and approachable and we would recommend to eat in Casa Mingos for their roast chicken. All in we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it for good value and most of all for convenience.

Florida Norte

After reading previous reviews we were a litte anxious about what this hotel would be like, but we need not have worried, yes the hotel is a little bit dated but it was clean, tidy and although the staff did not speak very good english they were extremely helpful and tried to help when they could. the hotel is situated across the road from the metro station princilpe pio which also houses what could be described as a shopping mall with all sorts of shops and restaurants and even a cinema. although situated a little way from the city centre this hotel gave excellent value for money and if i every visit Madrid again i would definitely stay at this hotel. for what we paid you just could not fault it in any way.
